It is learned from the news coverage of March 29, 2024, that Okan Özgül, a prisoner in Yozgat Boğazlıyan T Type Prison was found dead under suspicious circumstances in his ward on March 2, 2024. The cause of death is alleged to be suicide and it is reported that Okan Özgül’s family filed a criminal complaint to Boğazlıyan Public Prosecutor’s Office.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2024, that prisoners in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison were forced to take off their shoes after visits, and prisoners who refused to do so were subjected to physical violence by the correction officers.

It is learned that the appeal made on March 29, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, to visit them was not responded to.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 27, 2024, that 8 people including 1 police officer were wounded in a fight on Veyselkarani Street in Karakaya village of Baykan district of Siirt, and 5 people were detained.
It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2024, that Enver Aputkan, Antalya Serik Mayor and Mayor Candidate of Grand Union Party (BBP), used physical violence against Muhammet Büyükkaya (70, m) who said that he would not vote for him during his visits to shopkeepers in Memduh Bey Street in Serik.

The police intervened against executives and members of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) and Marmara Association for Assistance to Families of Prisoners and Convicts (MATUHAYDER) who held a press statement on March 28, 2024, in front of Bakırköy Women’s Prison about Hatice Yıldız (75, k) who was detained on March 22, 2024, after the decision on the case against her for sending money to her daughter and her daughter’s wardmate in prison was finalized. 15 people were detained during the police intervention against the press statement in front of Bakırköy Women’s Prison on March 28, 2024. Detainees were released the same day after statement procedures at the police station.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2024, that gendarmerie intervened in the work stoppage protest of workers at Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant under construction in Mersin on March 27, 2024, on the grounds of not receiving their salaries. It is not known whether anyone was detained or not.

The number of people detained on the grounds of ‘publicly inciting hatred and hostility’ and ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ through racist and discriminatory posts on the allegations of an increase in HPV and HIV cases at Karabük University became 10 as of March 29, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2024, that Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 1 upheld the acquittal of Special Operations Department police officers B.Ö., H.A., and N.Ö. on the charges of ‘causing death with probable intent’ in the case against Enes Ata (8) and Mahsum Mızrak (14) who were killed by tear gas canisters during the police intervention against a funeral in Diyarbakır on March 28, 2006.
A lawsuit was filed against police officers B.Ö., H.A. and N.Ö. in 2010 at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 1 on the charge of ‘causing death with probable intent’, and the acquittal verdict was overturned by the 2nd Criminal Chamber of Antep Regional Court of Appeals. After the acquittal verdict was given again in 2019, the case was appealed to the Court of Cassation.

The final trial of the case against 8 people, including Health and Social Service Workers Union (SES) Van Branch Co-Chairs Zeki Seven and Figen Çolakoğlu, HRFT applicant physician and Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber board member Dr. Ayfer Bostan, HRFT applicant physician and Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber former chair Dr. Hüseyin Yaviç, who were detained during the police intervention against the press statement on February 8, 2022 in front of Van Regional Training and Research Hospital, called by the Turkish Medical Association (TTB), on the working conditions and personal rights of health workers, was held at Van Penal Court of First Instance No 1 on March 29, 2024. The indictment demanded that 8 people be sentenced for ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court acquitted 8 people.

The final hearing of the case against journalist Pınar Gayıp, editor of Etkin News Agency (ETHA) and Mehmet Acettin, co-owner of the news agency, on the charge of ‘publicly degrading the State of the Republic of Turkey’ under Article 301/1 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK), for a news article published on the agency’s website, was held on March 28, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The court sentenced both of the defendants to 6 months and 7 days imprisonment each and suspended the sentences.

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against Uğur Koç, Managing Editor of BirGün Newspaper, due to ‘insulting the President’ through a news report he published, was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on March 28, 2024. The court sentenced the journalist to 11 months and 20 days in prison and ruled for the sentence to be suspended.

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against BirGün editor Gökay Başcan due to ‘insult’ upon the complaint of the President’s wife through a news article in the newspaper, was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 17 on March 28, 2024. The court acquitted the journalist.

The Ministry of Interior announced on March 29, 2024, that 70 people were detained in operations conducted in 20 provinces in the last 1 week.
