(03/278) Suspicious Death of Child in Urfa…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2022 that, the preliminary autopsy report for Muharrem Aksem, the 16-year-old child who was found dead in Micit (Çalışkan) neighbourhood of Eyyübiye district of Urfa on March 24, 2022, is submitted to his family’s lawyers. It is stated in the report that his body has lost the right hand, he has many open scars on the face and body, and 12 metallic objects of different sizes were removed from his body.

(03/279) Person Died by Police Fire in Istanbul…

It is learned that Erhan Eser (23) lost his life by the police opening fire on the grounds of ‘disobeying stop warning’ in Beylikdüzü district of Istanbul on March 28, 2022. Erhan Eser’s cousin Fırat Eser stated the following to the press: “The police did nothing when my cousin was shot. His friends in the car took him to the hospital.”

On March 28, 2022, local journalists Umut Yaygır and Özcan Saraç were subjected to the attack of a group of 15 people alleged to be members of the nationalist Ülkü Ocakları, and they were injured as a result of the attack.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2022 that, 45 people are kept in the quarantine ward of Çorum L Type Prison which is for 20 people, and thus some prisoners have to sleep on the ground.

(03/282) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Diyarbakır…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2022 that, 42 children who were detained in the police intervention to the Newroz celebration in Diyarbakır on March 21, 2022, were released after their blood samples were taken by order of the prosecutor’s office.

(03/283) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2022 that, 3 people who are reported to be readers of Partizan magazine, were subjected to physical and verbal violence of the police as they were sitting in a coffeehouse in Gülsuyu neighbourhood of Maltepe district of Istanbul on March 21, 2022; and that they were forcibly taken into the armoured police vehicle after being handcuffed behind their backs. It is reported that 3 people were kept in Esenkent Police Station for 4 hours with no official detention procedure, and they were threatened by the police saying ‘leave this neighbourhood, we will hang you over the armoured vehicle and take a ride in the neighbourhood’ before they were released.

(03/284) Journalist Subjected to Physical Violence of the Police in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2022 that, Yeni Demokrasi newspaper’s reporter Tuba Apaydın, who was reporting on the police torturing 3 people in a coffeehouse in Gülsuyu neighbourhood of Maltepe district of Istanbul on March 21, 2022, was subjected to physical violence of the police and was prevented from reporting. Tuba Apaydın stated the following to the press: “I was walked on by the police and my phone was confiscated while I was recording the torture. The police said, ‘If you get in the armoured vehicle, we will give back your phone’. They gave my phone back saying ‘you must have dropped it’ as the public reacted against them”.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on March 28, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on March 28, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(03/287) Detentions Related to Newroz Celebrations…

46 of 49 people including 2 children who were detained in house raids in Menemen, Buca, Torbalı, Bayraklı and Konak districts of Izmir on March 25, 2022, on the grounds of participating in Newroz celebration held on March 20, 2022, are released by the court on judicial control conditions and with a ban on leaving the country on March 28, 2022. 2 children and 1 person have been released on March 25, 2022. It is learned that 1 person is detained on March 28, 2022 and 1 person is detained on March 29, 2022 through the same investigation.

(03/288) People Prohibited from Entering Alcohol Serving Places in Eskişehir…

Socialist Youth Associations Federation (SGDF) central executive board member Sinem Çelebi and association member Deniz Konuk, who were detained in Eskişehir on March 14, 2022, were released by the court on March 16, 2022, on judicial control conditions and with a ban on leaving the country. It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2022, that the court rejected their lawyers’ appeal to the “prohibition from entering the places where alcoholic beverages are served and sold” which was stated as one of the judicial control conditions.

(03/289) Transphobic Murder Case in Izmir…

The trial of the case against 4 people including one arrestee (Serdar Gülsoy, Turgay Türker, Mesut Ataman, Murat İnceçelik) for the murder of trans woman Mira Güneş on February 22, 2021 in Bornova district of Izmir, is held at Izmir Bayraklı Heavy Penal Court No 5 on March 28, 2022. The court rejected intervention demand of the Youth LGBTI+ Association. The court decided to continue detention of Serdar Gülsoy, and the ban on leaving the country for Turgay Türker and Murat İnceçelik and adjourned the trial to April 25, 2022.

(03/290) Homeland Party Chair on Trial…

The final trial of the case against the Homeland Party chair Muharrem Ince, on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ in a speech he gave in 2016, is held at Uşak Penal Court of First Instance No 3 on March 28, 2022.

The court sentenced Muharrem İnce to 1 year and 2 months and then reduced the sentence to 11 months and 20 days and converted it to a penalty fine of 7,000 Turkish Liras.

(03/291) Constitutional Court Decision on Figen Yüksekdağ…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2022, the Constitutional Court has finalised the appeal of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former co-chair Figen Yüksekdağ, claiming that her right to liberty and security was violated by being arrested for the second time in 2019. It is learned that the court stated on March 2, 2022 that Figen Yüksekdağ’s appeal was found to be unacceptable due to “lack of foundation”.

(03/292) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 61 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 14,364 as of March 28, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 97,861 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 14,815,041 as of March 28, 2022.
