On January 29, 2025, the police intervened the protest in front of Siirt City Hall to protest trustee appointment to replace Sofia Alağaş, co-mayor of Siirt, and detained 3 people. The names of detained people are: Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Siirt Central District Co-Chair Şernas Çelepkolu, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Siirt Provincial Organization Executive Muhammed Polat and municipality employee Ferhat Toprak.

Journalist Barış Pehlivan and Halk TV presenter Seda Selek were detained in Istanbul on January 28, 2025 and Halk TV Managing Director Serhan Asker was detained in Ankara on the same date. It is learned that Halk TV executive editor Suat Toktaş and program coordinator Kürşad Oğuz were taken to the prosecutor’s office by the police on January 29, 2025 to take their statements through the same investigation.

On January 27, 2025, Zafer Party’s Küçükçekmece district chair Mustafa Güngör, who was detained in Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul on January 27, 2025 due to a banner reading “Down with İstibdat, Long Live Hürriyet” hung on the party building, was released by the criminal court of peace on January 28, 2028 with a ban on leaving the country.

The trial of the compensation lawsuit filed against the newspaper by Adnan Tanrıverdi, the founder of SADAT, on the grounds of ‘attacking personal rights’ due to the article titled “An Event: Allegations on SADAT and a Concept: Paramilitary Organization” published in a supplement of Evrensel newspaper, continued on January 28, 2025 at Istanbul Bakırköy 4th Commercial Court of First Instance. After the defenses, the court adjourned the hearing to May 20, 2025.

The first trial of the case against journalist Şehriban Aslan for a news report she made, started on January 29, 2025 at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 16. The indictment demands sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘violating the right to privacy’. The court adjourned the hearing to February 17, 2025.

The trial of the case against Artvin People’s House executive Dursun Ali Koyuncu continued on January 28, 2025 at Hopa Penal Court of First Instance No 1. The indictment demands sentence for Dursun Ali Koyuncu on the charges of ‘insulting a public officer’ and ‘resisting to prevent the execution of duty’. The court adjourned the trial to April 22, 2025.
Dursun Ali Koyuncu was detained on September 7, 2024, arrested on the same date, and was released on December 2, 2024.

The first trial of the case against Yaren Tuncer, former co-chair of Socialist Youth Associations Federation (SGDF), started on January 28, 2025 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 22. The indictment demands sentence for Yaren Tuncer on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. After defenses the court released Yaren Tuncer and adjourned the trial to a later date.

The trial of the case against Gülsüm Elvan, mother and Sami Elvan, father of Berkin Elvan, who was killed by a gas canister fired by the police during Gezi Park protests, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 43 on January 28, 2025. The indictment demands sentence for both defendants on the charge of ‘insulting the President’. The court adjourned the hearing to February 14, 2025.
(01/261) Yusuf Akın Case…
On January 28, 2025, the retrial of the case against soldiers K.E.O., S.T., B.Y., Y.E.K., D.G. in connection with the death of civilian Yusuf Akın and injury of Mehmet Eren during a military operation in Nusaybin district of Mardin on December 20, 2011, continued at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 1. The court rejected the demand of the complainant lawyer for the arrest of the defendant soldiers and adjourned the trial to May 13, 2025.
5 soldiers were acquitted by the court. The Constitutional Court (AYM) ruled that Yusuf Akın’s right to life was violated and sent the case file to Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 1 for retrial.

Siirt Co-Mayor Sofya Alağaş was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison for ‘being an illegal organization member’ and the Ministry of Interior appointed Siirt Governor Kemal Kızılkaya as a trustee in place of Sofya Alağaş on January 29, 2025.

It is learned that 6 news reports and 6 social media posts on https://www.diken.com.tr/, https://www.birgun.net/, https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr/, https://halktv.com.tr/, https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr/, https://www.bbc.com/turkce websites about the quarrel between a former MP of Justice and Development Party (AKP) and a police officer who stopped his car, are banned to access by Mersin Civil Court of First Instance No 3 on January 28, 2025 on the grounds of violation of personal, trademark and copyright rights.
