(10/280) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 27, 2022 that, a person whose name was not learned, was subjected to physical violence of the police in front of Ankara Courthouse. It is stated in the news reports that the person said “I am suffocating” and the police replied “You would not suffocate, don’t lie” and slapped this person.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 27, 2022 that, 3 people who were detained in a house raid in Batman were subjected to physical violence of the police. It is reported that one of them was injured at the face.

(10/282) Police Violence to Journalists in Istanbul…

Journalists Gülistan Dursun, Zeynep Kuray and Hayri Tunç were subjected to physical violence of the police as they were reporting on the justice watch held in front of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul on October 28, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 27, 2022 that, prisoners in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison were subjected to physical violence during a ward search and their personal belongings were seized.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 27, 2022 that, the letter of Hüsamettin Uğur, a prisoner in Afyon T Type Prison No. 1 to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu was seized by the prison administration and that Hüsamettin Uğur was given a penalty as a result of disciplinary proceedings against him.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 28, 2022 that, the PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan was given 6 months of prevention from lawyer visits penalty in Imrali High Security Prison.

It is learned that the appeal made on October 27, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

The police intervened in the press declaration of the Union of All Municipality and Local Administration Services Labourers (Tüm Bel-Sen) to protest the decision of the Council of State regarding the collective bargaining agreement, held in front of the Grand National Assembly on October 27, 2022 and forced the participants away.

The police prevented the press declaration regarding ill prisoners, held in front of Van Courthouse on October 27, 2022.

The police intervened in the justice watch regarding ill prisoners, held in front of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul on October 28, 2022 and detained 2 people (Fince Akman, Cemile Çiftçi).

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on October 27, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police detained journalist Zeynep Kuray by using physical violence and handcuffing her behind the back, as she was reporting on the justice watch regarding ill prisoners, held in front of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul on October 28, 2022.

3 members (Barış Avşar, Muhammet Sevacı and Fikret Soysal) of HDP Youth Assembly are detained on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in house raids in Batman on October 27, 2022. Detained people are released by the court on judicial control conditions on October 28, 2022.

HDP Çelikhan district co-chair Hüseyin Uzun who was detained in Adıyaman on October 26, 2022, is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on October 27, 2022.

(10/292) Detained People in Mersin…

1 of 15 people who were detained in Mersin on October 25, 2022, is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ on October 27, 2022. 14 people are released provided that 3 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

(10/293) Dedeoğulları Case…

The final trial of the case against 9 people including 2 arrestees, about the racist attack against Dedeoğulları family on May 12, 2021 where 7 family members got wounded, is held at Konya Heavy Penal Court No 8 on October 28, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for the defendants on the charges of ‘intentional injury’, ‘intentional injury with weapons’ and ‘violation of immunity of residence’. The court sentenced 9 people to jail sentences from 1 year to 6 years on the charge of ‘intentional injury’ and acquitted all defendants on the charge of ‘violation of immunity of residence’. The court also decided to release 2 arrested defendants considering their detention period.

(10/294) Parliamentary Member on Trial…

The trial of the case against HDP Siirt MP Meral Danış Beştaş, on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, ‘inciting the public to unlawful meetings and demonstrations’, ‘participating in unlawful meetings and not dispersing’, ‘public incitement to commit an offence’; is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 8 on October 27, 2022. Meral Danış Beştaş’s lawyer requested the stay of proceedings, on the grounds of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) violation decision regarding the lifting of parliamentary immunity. The court rejected the request and adjourned the trial to November 29, 2022.

(10/295) Former Co-Mayor on Trial in Van…

The trial of the case against HDP Democratic Local Authorities Board member and former Edremit district co-mayor Sevil Rojbin Çetin is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on October 27, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for Sevil Rojbin Çetin on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. Sevil Rojbin Çetin joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of Sevil Rojbin Çetin and adjourned the trial to December 8, 2022.

Sevil Rojbin Çetin was detained on June 26, 2020 in Diyarbakır and was arrested on July 7, 2020.

(10/296) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalist İsmail Arı on the grounds of sharing the personal data of the Turkish Red Crescent Society chair is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 58 on October 27, 2022. The court sentenced İsmail Arı to 2 years on the charge of ‘illegally obtaining and disseminating personal data’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

(10/297) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against journalists Canan Coşkun and Barış Pehlivan, upon the complaint of the Deputy Justice Minister and former judge Akın Gürlek is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 34 on October 27, 2022. The court decided to send the recusation request of the journalists to the higher court and adjourned the trial to January 17, 2023.

The trial of the case against journalist Aziz Oruç and Ersin Çaksu, for the news reports on Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on October 27, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘publicly degrading the state, the government, and the military or security organisation’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 30, 2023.

The trial of the case against journalist Can Dündar for participating in “Editors in Chief on Watch” campaign to support Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree; and against İnan Kızılkaya, executive editor of Özgür Gündem, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on October 27, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 2 journalists on the grounds of ‘insulting a public official’. The court decided to wait for execution of warrant against Can Dündar and adjourned the trial to March 30, 2023.

The trial of the case against 19 lawyers, for holding a press declaration to protest the October 10 Ankara Massacre, in front of Istanbul Courthouse on October 12, 2015; is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 13 on October 27, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for the lawyers on the charges of “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations” and “making propaganda for an illegal organisation”. The court adjourned the trail to January 24, 2023.

(10/301) Union Members and Executives on Trial in Antalya…

The final trial of the case against 48 people who had protested the governorate’s ban on a meeting of the Confederation of Public Employees’ Union (KESK) on May 29, 2016; is held at Antalya Penal Court of First Instance No. 18 on October 27, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 48 people on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court acquitted 48 people.

(10/302) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 16 people on the grounds of a protest about ill prisoners, is held at Istanbul Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No. 51 on October 27, 2022. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to February 28, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 27, 2022 that, Istanbul Penal Court of Peace ordered the seizure of 4 issues of Atılım newspaper, dated September 30, October 7, October 14, and October 21, 2022 upon the demand of Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office.

(10/304) Banned Event in Mersin…

It is learned that the solidarity event with the families of prisoners to be held in Mersin on October 28, 2022 by Çukurova Solidarity Association of the Families of Prisoners (Çukurova TUAY-DER) was banned by Mersin Governorate’s Office on October 27, 2022 on the grounds that it would ‘disrupt the public security and constitutional order’.
