It is learned from the news coverage of May 27, 2024, that Kendal Barut, an ill prisoner who was arrested on May 16, 2021, lost his left eye and is at risk of losing his right eye due to prevention of treatment.

It is learned that the appeal made on May 28, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(05/274) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment Under Custody…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 28, 2024 that, Şeyhmus Buran, who was detained in the Kızıltepe district of Mardin on May 24, 2024, was subjected to physical violence and threatened to death in a police car and at Mardin Security Directorate. It is learned that Şeyhmus Buran was then taken to Izmir.

Lawyer Velat Zeren stated the following to the press regarding the torture and ill-treatment to which his client Şeyhmus Buran was subjected: “My client went to Mardin from Izmir on Thursday for sightseeing. He arrived in Kızıltepe district of Mardin on Friday morning. Here he was suddenly intercepted by plainclothes police officers and detained. These police officers used violence and threatened Şeyhmus in the car for a while. Then these police officers handed Şeyhmus over to the Mardin Police Department. The police officers of the Mardin Police Department also subjected Şeyhmus to violence in a different vehicle. They say ‘Shall we take you outside the border and shoot you in the head’ and threaten ‘We will kill you’ by showing a gun. Then they took him to Mardin Police Headquarters. Şeyhmus spent that day at Mardin Police Headquarters. On Saturday, he was brought to Izmir at midnight on a connecting flight. He asked for a lawyer in Izmir, but his lawyer was not informed. I was informed that his statement was to be taken today. This is how I was able to take his statement”.

Şeyhmus Buran, who was detained on May 24, 2024, in the Kızıltepe district of Mardin, was arrested by Izmir Criminal Peace Judgeship No 2 on May 27, 2024, on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.

The first trial of the case against lawyer Fırat Taşkın on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ started on May 28, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4. The court acquitted Fırat Taşkın.

The final trial of the case against musician Emel Çiftçi on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ was held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 on May 28, 2024. The court acquitted Emel Çiftçi.

The final trial of the case against 2 people who were detained during the police intervention against the press statement of Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) members in Ankara about the earthquakes in Antep and Maraş on February 6, 2023, on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’ was held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 62 on May 28, 2024. The court acquitted 2 people.

The final trial of the case against 13 people who were detained during the police intervention against the press statement in Ankara against the President’s appointment of rector to Boğaziçi University, was held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 7 on May 28, 2024. The court acquitted 13 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’ and 2 people on the charge of ‘resisting to prevent the execution of duty’.

(05/280) Constitutional Court Decision on Torture and Other Ill-Treatment…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 27, 2024, that the Constitutional Court evaluated the individual application of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) group deputy chair and Kars MP Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit, who was injured as a result of being subjected to torture and ill-treatment by the police on August 20, 2019, and ruled that the procedural aspect of the prohibition of ill-treatment was violated and that Koçyiğit should be paid 100,000 TL non-pecuniary damages.

In 2019, Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit was prevented by the police from leaving the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) building during a press statement in Diyarbakır against the dismissal of Diyarbakır, Mardin and Van Co-Mayors by the Ministry of Interior. Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit, who obtained a medical report documenting the physical violence she was subjected to, filed a criminal complaint to Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office to initiate an investigation against public officials on the charges of ‘deprivation of liberty’, ‘torture’, ‘abuse of office’ and ‘injury’, and the prosecutor’s office ruled that there was no ground for prosecution. Diyarbakır Criminal Peace Judgeship No. 3 rejected the objection, and an individual application was made to the Constitutional Court.

On 28 May 2024, 8 people were detained in operations in Istanbul and Kayseri.
