(03/237) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 27, 2024, that Bahar Kızılaltun and Zeynep Gonca Karakoç were subjected to physical and verbal violence by the correction officers in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison, Bahar Kızılaltun was injured due to violence and Zeynep Gonca Karakoç was threatened with sexist swear words by the correction officers.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 27, 2024, that Cahit Aytaş, a prisoner in Samsun Kavak S Type Prison was subjected to disciplinary proceedings and was sentenced to 15 days of solitary confinement for participating in the hunger strike in prisons across Turkey, demanding an end to the isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2024, that some prisoners in Bitlis Ahlat T Type Prison are throwing sharp and injurious objects in the ventilation of a ward in which political prisoners are held.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 27, 2024, that Fethiye Ok and Seda Baykan, two prisoners in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison, went on a 5-day hunger strike on March 25, 2024, in solidarity with the rotating hunger strikes in prisons across Turkey, demanding an end to the isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue, and demanding an end to rights violations in their prison.

It is learned that the appeal made on March 28, 2024, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded by Bursa Public Prosecutor’s Office.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 27, 2024, that Ankara provincial executives and members of the Labour Party (EMEP) who wanted to visit the justice watch of Emine Şenyaşar, whose husband Hacı Esvet Şenyaşar and sons Adil and Celal Şenyaşar were killed after a quarrel between Justice and Development Party (AKP) MP candidate İbrahim Halil Yıldız and his bodyguards and shopkeepers in Suruç district of Urfa on June 14, 2018, in front of the Ministry of Justice, were prevented by the police and party executives and members left the area.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 27, 2024, that Mariam Pesvianidze, a citizen of Russia and Georgia, held a peaceful protest in front of the Russian Consulate in Istiklal Street in Istanbul, to protest Russian elections held on March 17, 2024; and was detained by the police and taken to Selim Paşa Removal Centre in Silivri, where she was kept for 4 days and then deported to Georgia.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2024, that 8 people who made racist and discriminatory social media posts on the allegations of an increase in HPV and HIV cases at Karabük University are detained on the charges of ‘public incitement to hatred and hostility’ and ‘publicly spreading misleading information’. The names of detainees could not be learned.

(03/243) Journalist on Trial due to Social Media Posts…

On March 27, 2024, the first hearing of the case against journalist Furkan Karabay, based on a social media post he made on November 2, 2023, with the complaint of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son Bilal Erdoğan, started at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 47. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charges of ‘slander’ and ‘insult’. The court ruled to lift the judicial control measures against the journalist and adjourned the hearing to June 25, 2024.

(03/244) The Hrant Dink Case…

The trial of the case against 15 public officials, 7 of them arrested, for the murder of Hrant Dink, Editor-in-Chief of Agos Newspaper, continued on March 27, 2024, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14. Defendant Veysel Şahin made the following statement “We made a mission result report as if the first intelligence we received 6 months before the murder was received one day after the murder. That was the order”. The court decided to continue the detention of arrested defendants and to continue judicial control measures against some defendants and adjourned the trial to May 31, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 27, 2024, that Ali Dumru, who wanted to attend DEM Party’s election rally in Bingöl on March 27, 2024, with a banner with photographs of Selahattin Eyyübi, Selahattin Demirtaş, İdris Baluken and Şeyh Said, was prevented by the police from entering the rally area, was detained and was released the same day.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 28, 2024, that Ozan Bozdoğan, mayor candidate of Homeland Party for Mersin Tarsus district, was attacked by an anonymous person(s) while his vehicle was parked in Yüksekköy neighbourhood. It is reported that no one was injured in the attack and material damage occurred in the vehicle.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 27, 2024, that two content on https://www.yeniasir.com.tr and https://bodrumhaber.com related to allegations of irregularities against Republican People’s Party (CHP) Muğla Menteşe mayor candidate was banned from access by Muğla Criminal Peace Judgeship No 2 on March 26, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 27, 2024, that 1 content on https://www.sozcu.com.tr related to allegations against Justice and Development Party (AKP) Izmir Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidate, Izmir Bayraklı mayoral candidate and Izmir Karşıyaka mayoral candidate was banned from access by Adana Criminal Peace Judgeship No 3 on March 26, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 27, 2024, that 3 content on https://www.gercekgundem.com, https://www.politikyol.com and https://www.yurtgazetesi.com.tr  related to fake brochures about mayoral candidates of different political parties in Adana, were banned from access by Adana Criminal Peace Judgeship No 4 on March 26, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights.

(03/247) People Detained and Arrested in Relation with the Coup Attempt…

On March 27, 2024, 1 person was detained for allegedly trying to illegally cross to Greece from Edirne.
