(01/241) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 28, 2025 that, Latif Mollaahmetoğlu, a prisoner in Izmir Type F High Security Prison No 2, was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of soldiers on duty during transfer to hospital and was threatened by saying “Remember me well and do not forget me, I have a lot of work with you”. It is also stated in the news reports that the prisoner was made to listen to racist songs in the vehicle.

On January 9, 2025, Deniz Şah, a prisoner in Izmir Type F High Security Prison No 2, who was injured in the head due to an accident while going to ventilation in Izmir Type F High Security Prison No 2, was subjected to detailed search and double handcuffs during transfer, and was threatened not to be taken to the hospital after he objected to these practices, and was examined in handcuffs in some wards of the hospital for treatment and examination.

It is learned that the appeal made on January 28, 2025 by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded by Bursa Public Prosecutor’s Office.

It is learned that Youth Committees member Demir Karabacak was taken to Istanbul Anatolian Courthouse on January 27, 2025, on the grounds of an investigation against him, after a general information gathering (GBT) in Istanbul, and was arrested by the criminal judgeship of peace on the grounds of insulting the President on social media accounts.

(01/244) Investigations Against People Investigated for the 2013 Gezi Protests…

 On January 27, 2025, manager Ayşe Barım, who was detained in Istanbul on January 24, 2025, on the grounds of participating in Gezi Protests in 2013 with artists of her agency, is arrested by the criminal judgeship of peace on the charge of ‘attempting to overthrow the Government of the Republic of Turkey or preventing it from performing its duty’.

It is learned from news coverage of the news coverage that a separate investigation is initiated against Halit Ergenç and Rıza Kocaoğlu, who gave their statements as witnesses on January 24, 2025, through the same investigation, on the grounds of ‘false testimony’.

Zafer Party’s Küçükçekmece district chair Mustafa Güngör is detained on January 27, 2025 in Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul, on the grounds of a banner reading “Down with Istibdat, Long Live Hürriyet” hung by his party.

On January 27, 2025, a person named N.K. who was detained in Istanbul on the allegations of insulting the President in a street interview was arrested by the criminal judgeship of peace on the same day.

The final hearing of the case against Sofya Alağaş, former Editor-in-Chief of Jinnews and Co-Mayor of Siirt Municipality, for her journalistic activities, was held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on January 28, 2025. The court sentenced Sofya Alağaş to 6 years and 3 months for ‘being an illegal organization member’.

(01/248) Investigation Against the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality…

It is learned that Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against Ekrem İmamoğlu, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, after his press declaration on January 17, 2025, on the same day, on the grounds that he revealed the name of an expert in the cases against him.

On January 27, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of January 27, 2025 that Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against journalist Barış Pehlivan for sharing the phone calls of the expert mentioned in the press declaration of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. It is also reported in the news reports that an investigation is initiated against the presenter and officials of Halk TV, where the phone call was broadcasted, on the grounds of ‘interception and recording of conversations between individuals’ and ‘attempting to influence the expert’.

On January 27, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of January 27, 2025 that Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against journalist Fırat Fıstık for a news report he made and called him to testify through the investigation.

(01/251) Discriminatory and Phobic Statement…

 

The following discriminatory and phobic statements were made by the President in his speech at the 7th Ordinary Congress of the Justice and Development Party Youth Branches on January 27, 2025: “We are also taking protective measures for our youth against the LGBT perversion that is spreading like a plague all over the world.”

(01/252) Districts with Prohibited Demonstrations and Events…

Istanbul Silivri District Governorate made a declaration on January 27, 2025 and announced that “gatherings, demonstrations, marches, press statements, interviews, camera recordings, opening banners, chanting slogans, setting up tents, coming to the courtrooms wearing clothes with symbols on them, shooting with mobile phones, taking photographs, and any other protest behaviours within 1 kilometre of Marmara (Silivri) Penal Institution Compound” will be banned between January 25, 2025 and February 28, 2025.
