(01/277) Person Died by Security Vehicle Hit in Mardin…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 27, 2022 that, the vehicle that hit a woman, Hazna Su, crossing the street in Kızıltepe district of Mardin on January 11, 2022, is recorded in Turkish Armed Forces inventory.

It is also stated in the news reports that the unnamed specialised sergeant who was driving the vehicle was arrested.

The trial of the case against co-executive editor Eren Keskin and managing editor Reyhan Çapan from Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on January 27, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to Mary 24, 2022. Eren Keskin and Reyhan Çapan were sentenced to a penalty fine of 10,461 Turkish Liras but the local court’s verdict was found insufficient and reversed by the Court of Cassation.

The trial of the case against Gazete Yolculuk reporter Buse Söğütlü, on the charge of ‘targeting a public officer held an anti-terror duty’ is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 on January 27, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to February 3, 2022.

The trial of the case against journalist Hayko Bağdat for social media posts is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 28 on January 27, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence from 1 year 10 months and 15 days to 13 years 1 month and 15 days for Hayko Bağdat on the charge of ‘successively making propaganda of an illegal organisation through press’. The court adjourned the trial.

The retrial of the case against Çetin Kurşun from Azadiya Welat newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 27, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to May 12, 2022. The local court has sentenced Çetin Kurşun to 3 years on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ but Antep Regional Court reversed the verdict.

The retrial of the case against Mustafa Bayram, Halfeti district co-mayor who was replaced by a trustee, and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former provincial co-chair Leyla Akça, and former provincial executives Mehmet Binici and Avni Gürbüz, is held at Urfa Heavy Penal Court No 6 on January 27, 2022. The court decided to release 4 people from prison and adjourned the trial. The local court’s verdict was reversed by the Court of Cassation.

The trial of the case against musician Ferhat Tunç for his social media posts is held at Istanbul Büyükçekmece Penal Court of First Instance No 14 on January 27, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Ferhat Tunç on the charges of ‘provoking hatred and hostility among public’ and ‘insulting the President’.

The court adjourned the trial to June 14, 2022.

The first trial of the case against a person who has participated in the picnic that was held at Maçka Park in Şişli district of Istanbul on June 22, 2021 as a part of Pride Week events; is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 44 on January 27, 2022. The case was opened upon a police officer’s criminal complaint.

The indictment demands sentence on the charge of ‘insulting a police officer’.

After defence and witness hearings the court adjourned the trial to June 30, 2022.

(01/289) Soldier on Trial in Van…

The first trial of the case against specialised sergeant T. K., on the grounds of sexually assaulting 2 children, is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 5 on January 27, 2022.

The defendant specialised sergeant T. K. joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court decided to release T. K. who was arrested on the charge of ‘sexual abuse of child’ on October 26, 2021.

The trial of the case against Mehtap Kıyar, a prisoner in Ankara Sincan Women’s Prison, on the grounds of participating in the hunger strike to demand an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, is held at January 27, 2022. Mehtap Kıyar joined the trial via sound and vision system. The court adjourned the trial to March 22, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 27, 2022 that, 33 people who have been detained by the police intervening the protest of students demanding their housing rights in Buca district of Izmir on September 27, 2021, were subjected to investigations on the charges of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’ and 2damage to public property’.

The Ministry of Health declared that 174 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 82,180 as of January 27, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 86,487 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 11,250,107 as of January 27, 2022.
