(01/264) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 27, 2021 that, Nazan Bozkurt, Alev Şahin, Mehmet Dersulu and Acun Karadağ, who were brought to Ankara Sincan L Type Prison No 3 for a trial, were forced to strip search at the entrance of the prison. These 4 people were arrested through the case against “I Want My Job Back” protestors.

On January 27, 2021, Turan Aktaş, who were having a protest in front of Şişli Municipality to regain his job back, is detained by the police.

(01/266) Police Interventions to Protests About Hunger Strikes in Prison…

The police prevented the press declaration of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Bingöl on January 27, 2021; which was held to draw attention to indefinite hunger strikes that started on November 27, 2020 in prisons to demand an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan. It is learned that the declaration was made out of the office window of HDP.

The police prevented the press declaration of MEBYA-DER (Association of People Lost Their Relatives in Mesopotamia) for the same cause, in front of Human Rights Monument in Diyarbakır on January 27, 2021. The police prevented the group again as they wanted to have the declaration in front of HDP’s district office in Sur.

Ayşe Gökkan, spokesperson of Free Women’s Movement (TJA) is detained in Diyarbakır, following the arrest warrant issued for her by the court on January 27, 2021. Ayşe Gökkan is arrested by the court on January 28, 2021.

TJA activist Zeynep Ölbeci is detained through the Ankara based investigation about Kobanê protests in 2014, in Istanbul on January 27, 2021. Zeynep Ölbeci is arrested by the court on the same day. Through this investigation, 28 people are arrested so far.

1 person (Gülperi Aslan) who was detained in a house raid in Eskihisar village of Nusaybin district of Mardin on January 26, 2021 is released by the court on judicial control conditions on January 27, 2021.

(12/270) “I Want My Job Back” Protestors on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case against 6 people (Acun Karadağ, Nazan Bozkurt, Alev Şahin, Mehmet Dersulu, Mahmut Konuk and Armağan Özbaş), participators of “I Want My Job Back” protests in Ankara to regain their jobs from which they were dismissed by state of emergency decrees, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 28 on January 27, 2021.

The court released Acun Karadağ, decided to continue detention of Nazan Bozkurt, Alev Şahin and Mehmet Dersulu, and adjourned the trial to April 5, 2021.

7 people have been detained in house raids in Ankara and Düzce on August 13, 2020 and 6 of them were arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation’ on August 22, 2020, while 1 person (Gülnaz Bozkurt) was released on judicial control conditions. 2 people (Mahmut Konuk and Armağan Özbaş) were released by the court at the trial held on December 9, 2020.

The trial of the case against journalists Veysi Sarısözen and Osman Akın is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 3 on January 27, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for journalists on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’:

The court adjourned the trial to June 2, 2021.

(10/272) Journalists on Trial in Edirne…

The trial of the case against Mezopotamya News Agency reporters Naci Kaya and İdris Sayılğan is held at Edirne Penal Court of First Instance No 8 on January 27, 2021. 2 journalists were detained in Edirne while they were reporting on the asylum seekers crossing the Greek border.

The indictment demands sentence for 2 journalists on the charge of ‘entering military zones without permission’.

The court decided to hear the military members who have detained 2 journalists and adjourned the trial to April 14, 2021.

The trial of the case against Mehmet Arslan, former co-chair and Harika Peker, former Party Assembly member of Democratic Regions Party (DBP) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on January 27, 2021.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to April 28, 2021.

The trial of the case against Ayşe Gökkan, spokesperson of TJA is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on January 27, 2021.

The court issued an arrest warrant for Ayşe Gökkan and adjourned the trial.

(01/275) HDP Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Vedat Dağ, a press staff of HDP, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on January 27, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Vedat Dağ, on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

It is learned that the court accepted the intervention demand of Celil Begdaş, who had a dispute with Vedat Dağ while he was holding a sit-in protest in front of HDP Diyarbakır office and adjourned the trial to April 28, 2021.

(01/276) Rosa Women’s Association Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, against Fatma Gültekin, a member of Rosa Women’s Association, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 on January 27, 2021.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to June 9, 2021.

(01/277) Ban of Events in Urfa…

Urfa Governorate made a declaration and announced that all meetings, demonstrations, marches, press declarations, sit-in protests, hunger strikes, opening stands and tents, collecting petitions, concerts, festivals, distributing leaflets, holding banners, carrying torches, conferences and so on are banned for 20 days as of January 27, 2021.

(01/278) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On January 27, 2021, 3 people are detained through an Ankara based investigation.

20 people who were detained on January 19, 2021 through a Balıkesir based investigation are released by the court on January 27, 2021.

(01/279) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 132 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 675 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on January 27, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 7,489.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 25,476 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 2,449,839 as of January 27, 2021.

It is learned that a health worker (doctor Tayfun Kepiç) in Tekirdağ lost his life from Covid-19 on January 27, 2021.
