(02/266) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…
From the news coverage of February 28, 2024, among the 12 prisoners in Ankara Sincan Women’s Prison, it is learned that;
- Zerrin Yılmaz’s hospital examinations were not carried out on time, medicines prescribed to Zerrin Yılmaz by physicians were delivered 6 months later and her petitions to the infirmary were lost;
- Muhabbet Kurt’s hospital referrals were not made on time and her appointments were canceled;
- Mukaddes Kubilay’s illnesses progressed due to the delay in her treatment in prison, she was sometimes subjected to handcuffed examination by gendarmes and the physician, and her treatment, which should have lasted for 10 days, was only carried out for 1 day;
- Zeynep Han Bingöl has been waiting for an appointment for an examination for 1 year, has been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment by health workers, and has not been transferred to hospitals for a while on the grounds that there are not enough gendarmerie personnel;
- Rozerin Kurt has not been able to exercise her right to health due to the gendarmerie imposition to stay in the room during the medical examination and her medical examinations have not been carried out for months;
- Selver Yıldırım was not able to benefit from her right to health due to the imposition of handcuffed examination, which caused her to lose her sight, her pain increased due to the lack of regular treatment, and the prescribed glasses were not provided by the prison administration;
- Esra Sayektaş’s test results were not delivered to her and she was not referred to a hospital;
- Pınar Tikit’s hospital referrals were either not made or made late and the prison administration did not provide her with the prescribed medication;
- Alev Yarar has been waiting for an appointment for a year for medical check-ups and examinations, she was not taken to a hospital despite being referred to one, and the prison administration did not provide her with prescribed medication;
- Zelal Bilgin was not taken to the infirmary despite her health complaints, her hospital referral procedures were delayed and her appointments for medical examinations were canceled on the grounds that there were not enough gendarmerie personnel;
- The medicines prescribed to Ayla Akat Ata were not provided by the prison administration or other medicines were provided, referrals for medical examinations were not made on time and dental treatment was not provided;
- Salver İspir was not treated due to being forced to be examined in handcuffs.
(02/267) Police Intervention against a Press Statement in Istanbul…
It is learned that 12 people were detained during the police intervention against the press statement of Socialist Women Assemblies (SKM) in front of the Süreyya Opera House in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul on February 27, 2024, in connection with the detentions in house raids in Izmir and Istanbul. Names of detained people are Özlem Gümüştaş, Hivda Selen, Ebru Yiğit, Simge Hatun Öztürk, Serpil Topal, Aynur Ergül, Leyla Can, Züleyha Müldür, Elif Baysal, Fatma Gülseren, Besra İşsever and Hatice Deniz Aktaş. All of the detainees were taken to the Istanbul Security Directorate and released the same day after statement procedures.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 28, 2024, that PİRHA reporter Diren Keser was arrested on February 27, 2024, after 1 year and 9 months of jail sentence given to him for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ was approved by Penal Department No 3 of the Court of Cassation.
(02/269) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…
Following the reversal of the verdict against Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul MP Enis Berberoğlu and journalist Erdem Gül in the case known as the “MİT Trucks Case” by the Penal Department No. 3 of the Court of Cassation, it was decided to separate Erdem Gül’s file in the retrial. The final hearing of the case against Erdem Gül was held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14 on February 28, 2024. The court sentenced the journalist to 5 years in prison for ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organization’.

The final trial of the case against journalist Yağmur Kaya, upon the complaint of the retired soldier Musa Çitil, for her interview with Human Rights Association (IHD) Co-Chair Eren Keskin, was held at Aydın Heavy Penal Court No 2 on February 27, 2024. The court acquitted the journalist on the charge of ‘targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism’.
(02/271) Saturday Mothers/People on Trial…
The trial of the case against 20 Saturday Mothers/People, who were detained in the police intervention against a peaceful gathering on June 10, 2023, started at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 20 on February 27, 2024. The indictment demands 20 people to be sentenced for ‘violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The indictment also demands that the Saturday Mothers/People be sentenced under Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) (upon conviction, the exercise of certain rights may be compulsorily prohibited). The court adjourned the hearing to June 7, 2024.

The first trial of the case against IHD co-chair Eren Keskin and Gülistan Yarkın, member of Commission Against Racism and Discrimination, for their statements on the Armenian Genocide on April 24, 2021, was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 51 on February 27, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for human rights defenders on the charge of ‘denigrating the Turkish Nation, the State of the Republic of Turkey, the institutions and organs of the State’. Following the defenses, the court adjourned the hearing to March 26, 2024
(02/273) Police Officer on Trial in Diyarbakır…
On February 27, 2024, the trial of the case against police officer S. G., for the torture and ill-treatment of Tevgera Jinên Azad (TJA) activist Rojbin Sevil Çetin by using a police dog in a house raid in Diyarbakır on June 26, 2020, was held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 9. The indictment demands a sentence for the defendant police officer on the charge of ‘simple injury’. The court rejected the demand of Rojbin Sevil Çetin’s lawyer to send the case to the Heavy Penal Court on the grounds that the attack is within the scope of the prohibition of torture and ill-treatment and adjourned the trial to May 30, 2024.
