(02/221) Earthquakes in Antep, Maraş and Malatya…

According to the information recorded by Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, on February 27, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 in Yeşilyurt district of Malatya which struck at 12:04 local time killed 2 people and injured 140 people as of February 28, 2023.

The Minister of Family and Social Services made a statement on February 28, 2023 and declared that a total of 1,902 unaccompanied children were registered in the system, 1,476 of them were identified and given to their families, 322 children were in the hospital, 104 children were in the institutions of the ministry, and 82 children could not be identified.

It is learned from the news coverage that, the number of contractors, including Nurdağı district mayor Ökkeş Kavak, who were arrested for their responsibility in the buildings collapsed in Antep and Maraş earthquakes is 203 as of February 28, 2023.

(02/222) Detained Journalists in Osmaniye…

It is learned that “Happy City Osmaniye” webpage editors journalists Ali İmat and İbrahim İmat, who were detained in Osmaniye on the grounds of their social media posts about the allegations that the tents sent for earthquake survivors in Osmaniye were not delivered to them, are arrested by the court on the charge of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ on February 27, 2023.

(02/223) Police Intervention to Protests in Ankara and Istanbul…

The police intervened in the press declaration of the Labourer Movement Party (EHP) members in front of the Red Crescent office in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on February 27, 2023 and detained 20 people. Detained people were released on the same day.

The police intervened in the groups participating in the press declaration held by the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) members in front of the Red Crescent headquarters in Ankara on February 27, 2023 and detained at least 2 people.

On February 27, 2023, 4 members of the Students’ Collective and the Feminist Collective who were distributing leaflets reading “What is the Red Crescent for? It is for not sending tents to the earthquake region since the first day but to sell the tents on the twentieth day” in Istiklal Street of Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on February 27, 2023.

(02/224) Detained People in Mersin…

On February 28, 2023, 3 executives of the Community Houses were detained in Mersin. Detained people were released after statement procedures on the same day.

On February 28, 2023, 4 members of the Left Party (Kemal Dama, Mehmet Antmen, Hazal Manguldar and Tuna Şahin) are detained in house raids, on the grounds of participating in the protest about the allegations about the Red Crescent in Mersin.

(02/225) Prevention of Relief Activities in Earthquake Region…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 27, 2023 that, 6 members of the Social Freedom Party (TÖP) and Purple Solidarity, were kept for 2 hours by the gendarmerie special forces units in Güzelburç village of Antakya district of Antakya, and were released afterwards. It is stated in the news reports that 6 people were threatened for 2 hours.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 28, 2023 that, the tents of the crisis coordination center by the Turkish Medical Association (TTB), the Health and Social Service Workers’ Union (SES) and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Veterinary Clinic were wanted to be evacuated by the Hatay Governorate’s Office.

(02/226) Prosecutions and Detentions for Social Media Posts…

The General Directorate of Security announced that prosecutions were initiated against 581 people and 145 people were detained, 27 people were arrested for their social media posts about the earthquakes in Antep and Maraş, as of February 28, 2023.

(02/227) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 27, 2023 that, the food given to prisoners in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) L Type Prison No. 2, and the wards were provided with hot water only one hour a day, and cold water was provided only in certain hours.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 27, 2023 that, the babies kept in Antalya Elmalı T Type Prison were not given special food and thus babies have nutrition problems.

(02/228) Investigation Against Lawyer in Samsun…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 27, 2023 that, Samsun Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against and called for statement, lawyer Hüseyin Cimşit, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’. Hüseyin Cimşit has made criminal complaints about the President, several ministers and several mayors due to their responsibility in the earthquake casualties.

(02/229) Ban of Events in Mersin…

Mersin Governorate’s Office made a declaration on February 28, 2023 and announced that meetings and demonstrations, press declarations, indoor and outdoor assemblies, protests, rallies, opening tents and stands, sit-in protests, hunger strikes, commemorations, hanging banners, distributing leaflets, collecting petitions, carrying torches, conferences, panel talks, seminars and so on are banned for 15 days as of February 28, 2023.
