(12/259) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 27, 2022 that, 5 prisoners (Mahir Kapan, Celil Dağtekin, Nevzat Akbulak, Ömer Özkan and Özgür Taş) in Elazığ T Type Prison are on indefinite hunger strike to protest threats since December 22, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 27, 2022 that, Mehmet Gürler, a prisoner with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Kocaeli Kandıra F Type Prison was not receiving treatment.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 27, 2022 that, Abdullah Kuytul, a prisoner in Ağrı Patnos L Type Closed Prison was being kept in solitary cell and was prevented from the right to have a video call.

(12/262) Gendarmerie Intervention to a Protest in Izmir…

The gendarmerie intervened in the protest demanding reemployment of Erdoğan Çapaklı who was dismissed by Polyak Eynez Mining Company in Kınık district of Izmir on December 27, 2022, and detained at least 6 people including the Independent Miners Union (Bağımsız Maden-İş) chair Gökay Çakır, organisation specialist Başaran Aksu and union representative Ozan Çetin by using physical violence.

The gendarmerie intervened in the protest once again on December 27, 2022 and detained 6 people. It is learned that Başaran Aksu was injured during the intervention.

It is learned that a person named D. G. was stopped by the police for general information check in Izmir on December 27, 2022 and was detained by forcibly taken into the police car. It is learned that the reason for detention was the allegation that D. G. has ‘publicly degraded the state’ in the declaration of the Women Strong Together collective about the case of the murder of Deniz Poyraz by Onur Gencer who attacked the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Izmir office.

(12/264) Investigation Against TMA Central Council Members…

Turkish Medical Association (TTB) Central Council made a statement on December 27, 2022, and announced that an investigation was launched by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against TMA chair and HRFT Board Member Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı and the members of the TMA Central Council and a confidentiality decision was made about the investigation.

(12/265) Ankara Gezi Case…

The final trial of the case against 26 people for the Gezi Park protests in Ankara in 2013, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 14 on December 28, 2022. The prosecutor has demanded acquittal first, but then declared legal opinion once again and demanded sentence on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court sentenced 24 people to jail sentences from 10 months to 2 year and 8 months on the charges of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’ and ‘resisting to the police’; 1 person to 7 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and acquitted 2 people.

(12/266) Police Officer on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against police officer S. E. regarding the death of Çetin Kaya by police fire in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on November 29, 2021 is held at Istanbul Anadolu Heavy Penal Court No. 13 on December 28, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for the defendant police officer on the charge of ‘intentional killing’. The court sentenced S. E. to life imprisonment on the charge of ‘intentional killing’ and then reduced the sentence to 25 years on the grounds of “the defendant’s good behaviour”.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 27, 2022 that, the Twitter account of Etkin News Agency is banned to access on the grounds of “protection of the national security and public order” by Hatay Penal Court of Peace No. 1 on December 20, 2022.

(12/268) Special Security Zones in Şırnak…

Şırnak Governorate made a declaration on December 27, 2022 and announced 15 areas in central, Cizre, Silopi, Beytüşşebap, Uludere and Güçlükonak districts as special military security zones from January 1 to January 15, 2023.

Special military security zones: Cudi Mountain, Bestler Dereler, Kurt Mountain, Kureşin, Karaçalı, Kel Mehmet Mountain, Serin, 2088 Rk T., Küçük Su, Gabar Mountain, Faraşin, Altın Mountain, İncebel Mountain, Oymakaya and Tanin.

(12/269) Special Security Zones in Diyarbakır…

Diyarbakır Governorate made a declaration on December 28, 2022 and announced 2 hamlets (Hevsel and Aliye) in Yalımlı neighbourhood of Lice district as special military security zones for 7 days as of December 28, 2022.
