(08/209) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 28, 2024, that 26 of 31 prisoners who were subjected to disciplinary proceedings in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison for organising an event about Kobanê on July 19, 2024, were sentenced to 1 month communication penalty and 5 prisoners were sentenced to 1 month visit penalty each. It is also learned that prisoners appealed to Izmir Karşıyaka Execution Judgeship No 1.
(08/210) Allegations of a Fire in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 28, 2024, that a fire broke out in Istanbul Metris T Type Prison No 1 on August 27, 2024, and the fire was extinguished by fire brigades. It is claimed in the news reports that the fire was caused by prisoners setting fire to their beds, protesting violations and conditions in the prison.
On August 28, 2024, the Counter Disinformation Centre of the Directorate of Communications made the following statement on its social media account regarding the fire: “A prisoner set fire to his bed in Metris T Type Closed Prison No. 1 in the Esenler district of Istanbul. The flames were extinguished by the staff in a short time before they turned into a fire, and the fire brigade was called as a precaution. There was no fire in Metris Prison and no prisoner or staff was affected by the incident”.
(08/211) People Threatened by the Gendarmerie in Diyarbakır…
On August 27, 2024, Dicle Elektrik Dağıtım A.Ş. (DEDAŞ) teams accompanied by the gendarmerie and armored vehicles went to the Kazancı neighborhood in the Bismil district of Diyarbakır and the locals protested against them. A gendarmerie personnel said: ‘We will not start anything until we take the meters out of your village. If you do not give permission, we will cut your electricity. We will leave you in the dark. Tomorrow we will come with bigger reinforcements. We will take your meters here to the electricity poles’ and a gendarmerie personnel allegedly insulted a person.
A resident of the neighbourhood, who witnessed the events, stated the following to the press: “DEDAŞ entered our village this morning with many armored vehicles. They stated that they would put the electricity meters on the poles. A woman who reacted against this situation was insulted by a soldier. Village residents also reacted against the insulting soldier. We wanted to meet with a DEDAŞ official, but there was no official. On behalf of DEDAŞ, a ranking soldier from the Bismil District Gendarmerie Command dealt with us. We told him that there were many villages before our village and that the same practice was applied to all of them. We said that the practice here was deliberate. We reacted by saying ‘You are deliberately applying this practice to this village’’.

70 people who were detained on August 26, 2024, during the gendarmerie intervention against mine workers and members of Independent Mine Workers’ Union who staged a sit-in protest in front of a mine in the Soma district of Manisa against the dismissal of some workers due to unionizing, were released on August 27, 2024, after statement procedures at the police.
(08/214) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 28, 2024, that the indictment of Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalist Zeynep Kuray, on the grounds of her social media posts since 2014, was accepted by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26. The indictment demands a sentence for journalist on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. The first hearing of the case will be held on December 2, 2024.
(08/215) Decision of No Prosecution Regarding the Statements of the Defendant in the Sinan Ateş Case…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 27, 2024, that Istanbul Anadolu Heavy Penal Court No 10 ruled ‘no prosecution’ for Doğukan Çep, who is on trial on the grounds of being the alleged triggerman in the case on Sinan Ateş’s murder on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 32, on the grounds that the investigation was duplicate, upon the application of Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) lawyers demanding retrial.
Doğukan Çep had testified in the Sinan Ateş trial held between 1-5 July 2024 that “I attacked the Maltepe district office of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), I wounded Cebrail Günebakan, and I shot ESP members”.

The Ministry of Interior announced on August 28, 2024, that 20 people were detained in operations conducted in 11 provinces due to denunciations, finalised prison sentences, using ‘ByLock’ program, communicating via payphones and ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.
