In the run-up to May 1, 39 people—including members of various political parties and platforms—were detained during home raids conducted in Istanbul and Kocaeli on April 28, 2026, as part of an Istanbul-based investigation. It was reported that a 24-hour restriction on access to legal counsel was imposed in connection with the investigation.
It was also reported that, as part of the same investigation, the Istanbul offices of the Özgür Gelecek and Yeni Demokrasi newspapers were raided by police.

The trial of journalists Tuğçe Yılmaz, Erdoğan Alayumat, Suzan Demir, Taylan Abatan, Gülcan Dereli, translator Serap Güneş, and sociologist Berfin Atlı, which was initiated at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 13, continued on April 28, 2026. The indictment seeks the conviction of seven individuals, five of whom are journalists, on charges of “aiding an organization.” The court adjourned the hearing until September 17, 2026.

The trial of BirGün reporter İsmail Arı, initiated at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 2 following a complaint by Levent Uysal, a Mersin MP from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), resumed on April 28, 2026. The indictment seeks the journalist’s conviction on charges of “insult” and “slander.” The court adjourned the hearing until October 20, 2026.
(04/198) Stone Attack on Party Headquarters in Ankara…
It was reported that on April 27, 2026, an unidentified person or persons carried out a stone attack on the district headquarters of the Republican People’s Party in Ankara’s Keçiören district, resulting in material damage to the building. It was reported that one person detained in connection with the attack was arrested.
