(09/225) The Prisoner Who Was Not Handed the Book He Wrote…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 27, 2023, that İsa Kaya, a prisoner in Kayseri T Type Prison, has not been given his Kurdish book “Mirxas” for 3 months on the grounds that it is “under review.”

(09/226) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

On September 26, 2023, the police intervened in the sit-in protest of Trendyol workers, who were dismissed from their jobs for being union members, in front of the company’s headquarters in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul and detained 15 people by using physical violence, including Neslihan Acar, the chair of the Warehouse, Port, Shipyard and Marine Workers Union (DGD-Sen) and Süleyman Şen, the chair of the Postal, Telephone and Telecommunication Workers Union (PTT-Sen).

12 people were detained with house raids in Mersin on the grounds of making propaganda of an illegal organization in their social media posts on September 27, 2023.

2 people were detained in house raids in the Kızıltepe district of Mardin on September 27, 2023. The reason for their detention could not be learned.

The three people who were detained on September 26, 2023, in the Savur district of Mardin were released following their statement procedures at the gendarmerie. The reason for their detention could not be learned.

The final hearing of the case against former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP Selma Irmak for her remarks in a TV program in 2015, was held at the Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 on September 27, 2023. The court sentenced Selma Irmak to 4 years and 2 months, 2 years and 11 months for ‘insulting the President’ and 1 year and 3 months for ‘degrading the government’.

The trial of the case against Ceylan Aslan, HDP Municipal Assembly member from the Ergani district of Diyarbakır, continued on September 27, 2023, at the Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 11. After defences, the court adjourned the hearing to February 5, 2024.

(09/232) ÇHD Chair on Trial in Ankara…

The final hearing of the case against lawyer Selçuk Kozağaçlı, the chair of Progressive Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD), was held at the Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 29 on September 26, 2023. The indictment demands Selçuk Kozağaçlı be sentenced for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ based on raw footage of a movie called “Mahalle,” which was not released in Turkey. The court acquitted Selçuk Kozağaçaçlı.

The first hearing of the case launched against Grup Yorum members Bergün Varan, Fırat Kaya, Cemil Kurt, Cenk Turan and Boran Hurustan at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No.23 was held on September 27, 2023. Following the defences, the court released Grup Yorum members on judicial control condition and adjourned the trial to a later date. Grup Yorum members were arrested on September 29, 2022, after being detained in a police raid on Idil Cultural Center in Okmeydanı, Istanbul.

(09/234) Magazine Employee on Trial in Tekirdağ…

On September 26, 2023, the trial of the case against Ramazan Dışari, who was detained and arrested while selling Demokratik Modernite magazine at the HDP provincial congress in Tekirdağ on September 25, 2022, was held at Tekirdağ Heavy Penal Court No. 2. The indictment demands sentence for Ramazan Dışari on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and providing finance for an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to December 14, 2023. Ramazan Dışari was arrested on September 25, 2022, and was released at the first hearing of the case held on March 7, 2023.

(09/235) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 35 people, including the journalist Buse Söğütlü, on the grounds of attending the Feminist Night Walk that took place on March 8, 2020, in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, continued on September 26, 2023, at the Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 58. The indictment demands a sentence for 35 people on the charges of violating the Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’, ‘resisting to prevent public duty’ and ‘damaging public property.’ 2 police officers attended the hearing as witnesses. The court adjourned the trial to April 1, 2024.
