(03/188) Interventions and Detentions Towards Protests Against the Detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor…

The police used tear gas and water cannons to intervene the protest at METU campus in Ankara on March 26, 2025, to protest arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. It is learned that 30 people were detained during the intervention.

30 people who were detained in Ankara are released by the criminal court of peace on March 26, 2025. 6 of them are released on house confinement and 24 of them are released on judicial control conditions.

106 people were detained in house raids in Istanbul on March 26, 2025.

44 of 66 people who were detained in Istanbul are arrested by the court on March 26, 2025. 22 people were released on judicial control conditions.

The police used tear gas, water cannons, water cannons and physical violence against the protest organized for the same cause in Adana on March 26, 2025. It is not known whether anyone was injured or detained.

7 people are detained in house raids in Adana on March 26, 2025. The names of the detainees are: Ömer Barış Bozkurt, Sıla Güle, Yiğitcan Yeter, Berk Deran, Halit Güney Akın, Mustafa Demircan and a person named Güney whose last name is unknown.

The police intervened the protest organized for the same cause in Konak district of Izmir on March 26, 2025 with tear gas and water cannons. It is not known whether anyone was detained or injured during the intervention.

3 of 16 people who were detained on March 22, 2025 in Edirne are arrested by the court on March 25, 2025.

4 of 74 people who were detained in Kocaeli on March 22, 2025 are arrested by the criminal court of peace on March 26, 2025. 70 people were released, 65 of them on judicial control conditions. 4 people were released after statement procedures at the police

2 people detained in Bolu were arrested by the Criminal Court of Peace on March 26, 2025 on the charge of ‘insulting the President’.

On March 27, 2025, Veli Saçılık was detained in a house raid in Ankara.

Ministry of Interior made a declaration on March 27, 2025 and announced that 1879 people were detained across Turkey, 260 people were arrested, 468 people were released with judiciary control conditions and 662 people are still under custody.

On March 25, 2025, journalist Yağız Barut, who was detained by the police in Izmir on March 24, 2025 while following the protest in Izmir about arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, is released after statement procedures at the police.

Sendika.org reporter Zişan Gür, who was detained while covering the protest at Saraçhane Square in Fatih district of Istanbul, is released by the court on judicial control conditions on March 26, 2025.

7 journalists (Bülent Kılıç, Kurtuluş Arı, Yasin Akgül, Ali Onur Tosun, Zeynep Kuray, Hayri Tunç, Gökhan Kam) who were detained on March 24, 2025 in Istanbul and arrested by the Criminal Judgeship of Peace on March 25, 2025 on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’, were released by the court on March 27, 2025 upon their lawyers’ appeal.

Director İlker Canikligil, who was detained in Istanbul on March 25, 2025 on the allegations of ‘public incitement to commit a crime’ and ‘public incitement to hatred and hostility’ for his remarks in a social media broadcast, is arrested by the criminal court of peace on March 26, 2025.

On March 26, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of March 26, 2025 that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against journalist Can Ataklı on the grounds of ‘publicly spreading misleading information to the public’ for his social media post on the health condition of Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chair. Can Ataklı was released on March 27, 2025 with a ban on leaving the country after testifying before a criminal court of peace.

On March 26, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of March 26, 2025 that, members of Eğitim-Sen Central Executive Board who testified through the investigation initiated by Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, were released by the criminal court of peace on house confinement for 2 weeks and on judicial control conditions of signing in once a week.

(03/196) Co-Mayor and Other People on Trial in Mardin…

The trial of the case against 10 people including Asya Gezer, co-mayor of Dargeçit district of Mardin elected from Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) and DEM Party Dargeçit district co-chair Abdurrahman Arslan, continued on March 26, 2025 at Mardin Heavy Penal Court. The court adjourned the hearing to a later date.

(03/197) Former Municipality Assembly Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Ceylan Aslan, former member of Ergani District Municipality Assembly of Diyarbakır’s Ergani District elected from Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), who was dismissed by the Ministry of Interior, on the grounds of peaceful meetings and demonstrations, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on March 26, 2025. The court sentenced Ceylan Aslan to 7 years and 6 months for ‘being an illegal organization member’ and 6 months for ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’, for a total of 8 years.

The final trial of the case against 40 people including 3 journalists (Vedat Örüç, Taylan Öztaş and Tunahan Turhan) for the press declaration in Kadıköy district of Istanbul to protest trustee appointments, is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 76 on March 26, 2025. The court sentenced 37 people to 5 months, 3 people to 3 months and 10 days and deferred the announcement of the verdict on the charge of ‘opposing the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’.

On March 26, 2027, it is learned from news coverage of March 26, 2027 that a total of 14 social media accounts of feminist organizations and platforms (Purple Solidarity, Socialist Women, Platform to Stop Femicide, University Feminist Collective, Feminist Agenda, Emek ve Gül, Campus Witches, Women’s Defence Network, Women Together Strong, Women for Equality Platform, Yeni Demokrat Kadın, Kırıkyama Women’s Solidarity (2 accounts), Young Feminists Federation) are banned to access on the grounds of national security and protection of public order.

On March 26, 2025, it is learned from the news coverage of March 26, 2025 that 3 social media posts about a discussion between a police chief and a police sergeant in Kocaeli about the use of tear gas chemical agents are banned to access on the grounds of national security and protection of public order.

(03/200) Special Security Zone in Şırnak…

Şırnak Governorate made a declaration on March 26, 2025 and announced that Bestler Dereler Region in the central district of Şırnak, Gabar Mountain Region in the central district and Güçlükonak district of Şırnak, Cudi Mountain Region in the central district, Silopi and Cizre districts of Şırnak, Kurt Mountain Region in the central district, Silopi and Uludere districts of Şırnak, Kelmehmetler-Dönmezler-Kovankaya Region in the Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak, Tahtareş, Hüsrevpaşa-Suhurpaşayayla, İncebeldağları, Faraşin Regions, Altındağları Region in Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak province, Oymakaya Region in Beytüşşebap and Uludere districts of Şırnak province have been declared as temporary special security zones for 15 days between March 26, 2025 and April 9, 2025.
