(01/161) Police Intervention in Protests in Izmir, Diyarbakır, Mardin, and Mersin…

On January 26, 2026, a total of 11 people who were detained during the police intervention against the protest held in Izmir on January 23, 2026, regarding the attacks against Kurds in Syria, and during the subsequent house raids, were released, 5 of them under judicial control. The names of those detained are: İshak Akman, Amine Aysel, Ceren Ağaç, Adar Akdağ, Ali Ekber Güleser, Serdar Bayram, Mehmet Emin Karadağ, Agit Çelik, Yusuf Tink, Emre Sarıkaya, and Mehmet Özçelik.

3 of the 19 people detained on January 23, 2026, for participating in protests in Diyarbakır (Amed Eflatun, Azat Akkalu, and Mehmet Salih Karacadağ) for the same reason were arrested on January 26, 2026, by the magistrate’s court to which they were referred. Sixteen people were released, six of them under judicial supervision.

On January 24, 2026, one of the 19 people detained during a police intervention at a protest held in the Kızıltepe district of Mardin for the same reason was arrested by the magistrate’s court to which they were referred on January 26, 2026. Nine individuals were released after giving statements to the police, and nine others were released after giving statements to the prosecutor.

Two of the 10 individuals detained for participating in protests held in the Akdeniz and Tarsus districts of Mersin for the same reason (Azad Çiçek and Deniz Toktaş) were arrested on January 26, 2026, by the magistrate’s court to which they were referred on charges of violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations. It was learned that 8 people are still in custody.

During house raids on January 26, 2026, nine people were detained in the Nusaybin district of Mardin on the same grounds for participating in protests. The names of those detained could not be learned.

Journalist Sedef Kabaş was detained on January 26, 2026, in Istanbul on charges of “insulting the president” and “inciting crime” based on a social media post she made.

(01/163) Healthcare Worker Detained in Kocaeli…

Nurse I.A., detained in Kocaeli as part of an investigation launched against her for sharing a video on social media in which she braided her hair to protest attacks against Kurds in Syria, was released on January 26, 2026, by the magistrate’s court to which she was referred, subject to judicial supervision.

(01/164) Trial of Journalists in Istanbul…

The retrial of journalists Nazlı Ilıcak and Ahmet Hakan, who were sentenced for “aiding an organization without being a member” in the Istanbul 26th Heavy Penal Court, began on January 27, 2026, after the Supreme Court overturned their sentences. The court postponed the hearing until March 12, 2026.

(10/165) Publishing House Owner and Employee on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of Hakkı Boltan, owner of Aram Publications, and Delil Zengeralp, an employee of the publishing house, continued on January 27, 2026, at the Diyarbakır 4th Heavy Penal Court. The case was brought on the grounds that two books were confiscated by the police from the publishing house’s stand at a book fair held in Diyarbakır in 2024. The indictment seeks punishment for the two individuals on charges of “making organization propaganda.” The court postponed the hearing until April 14, 2026.

(01/166) Province Where Actions and Events Are Banned…

In a statement made on January 26, 2026, the Urfa Governor’s Office announced that, in order to prevent participation in demonstrations, sit-ins, press statements, protests, and similar actions and events within the province’s borders, as well as any other actions or events that violate the law, the entry and exit of individuals and vehicles deemed likely to participate in illegal actions/events into the province’s borders from January 27, 2026, to January 31, 2026, for a period of 5 days.

In a statement made on January 26, 2026, the Mardin Governor’s Office announced that gatherings, marches, press statements, hunger strikes, sit-ins, rallies, setting up stands, erecting tents, distributing statements/brochures, hanging posters/banners, and similar actions and events, as well as the entry and exit of individuals and vehicles assessed as likely to participate in such actions and events within the province’s borders for a period of 5 days between January 27, 2026, and January 31, 2026.
