(01/247) Suspicious Death of a Soldier in Antep…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 26, 2021 that, İbrahim Meşe, who was on compulsory military service as gendarmerie private at Antep E Type Prison, is found dead in the guard watch cabin on January 21, 2021. It is claimed in the news reports that İbrahim Meşe killed himself.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 26, 20201 that, İlhan Kaya, a prisoner in Bolu F Type Prison was subjected to physical violence of the correction officers on January 13, 2021.

(01/249) Rejection to Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan…

It is learned that the appeal made on January 26, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was rejected the same day on the grounds of the ban for Abdullah Öcalan which prevents lawyer visits for 6 months.

(01/250) Detained HDP Executive, SGDF Member and Other People…

On January 26, 2021, 8 people are detained in operations covering 6 cities through an Ankara based investigation against Revolutionary Youth Movement (DGH). Detained people are: Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) executive board member Sevim Akdağ, Narin Dönmez, Socialist Youth Associations Federation (SGDF) member Cengiz Fidan and 5 more persons. It is learned that detained 8 people will be taken to Ankara.

On January 26, 2021, following the curfews announced in 16 rural neighbourhoods of Nusaybin district of Mardin, 1 person (Gülperi Aslan) is detained in a house raid in Eskihisar rural neighbourhood.

(01/252) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Alev Şahin, editor in chief and reporter Hazal Ocak of Cumhuriyet newspaper, is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 14 on January 26, 2021.

The case was opened upon the criminal complaint of Mehmet Cengiz, CEO of Cengiz Holding, for the news report “Luxurious Extension with a Bosporus view” which was published on October 6, 2019; and the indictment demands sentence for journalists on the charge of ‘damage to reputation’.

After defence hearings the court dismissed the case.

(01/253) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalist Reyhan Çapan is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 26, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Reyhan Çapan on the charges of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation through the press’ and ‘publishing and spreading declarations of an illegal organisation’.

Reyhan Çapan and her lawyers did not attend the trial and the court adjourned the trial to a later date.

The trial of case against TV10 channel employees Kemal Demir and Kemal Karagöz is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 28 on January 26, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organisation without being a member of it’.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 20, 2021.

The trial of the case against journalist Derya Okatan is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 39 on January 26, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Derya Okatan on the charge of ‘insult’ for a news report by Etkin News Agency, “Mersin Women’s Platform: We reveal sexual harassment of lawyer Onur Kale”.

The court adjourned the trial to a later date.

(01/256) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against Osman Çalık, executive editor of Samanyolu TV channel which was closed down, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 on January 26, 2021. The court sentenced Osman Çalık to 7 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(01/257) Actress on Trial for ‘Insulting the President’ in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against actress Nilüfer Aydan, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ in social media posts is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 37 on January 26, 2021.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to a later date.

(01/258) HDK Co-Spokesperson on Trial…

The first trial of the case against Sedat Şenoğlu, co-spokesperson of Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 36 on January 26, 2021.

Sedat Şenoğlu attended the trial and made his defence declarations. The court released Sedat Şenoğlu and adjourned the trial to January 30, 2021.

Sedat Şenoğlu was detained on September 8, 2020 and was arrested by the court on September 11, 2020.

(01/259) Curfew in Nusaybin…

Mardin Governorate made a declaration on January 25, 2021 and announced curfew in 16 rural neighbourhoods of Nusaybin district as of 23:59 on January 25, 2021 until a further notice. Mardin Governorate lifted the curfew as of 23:45 on January 26, 2021.

The rural neighbourhoods under curfew were: Bahmin, Yakınca, Kaleli, Güneli, Yol, Günyurdu, Mağaracık, Tekağaç, Arpalı, Sapanlı, Şekrin, Güzelsu, Dibek, Üçyol, Dağiçi, Eskihisar.

(01/260) Curfew in Bitlis…

Btlis Governorate made a declaration on January 26, 2021 and lifted the curfew as of 18:00 in 10 villages of central district which was effective as of 21:30 on January 11, 2021 until a further notice. The villages under curfew were: Kayalıbağ, Kaşıklı, Karaca, Aşağıçobansuyu, Çobansuyu, Güllüce, Esenburun, Harmanyeri, Sarıkonak, Konalga.

(10/261) Ban of Events in Tunceli…

Tunceli Governorate made a declaration on January 26, 2021 and announced that, all events such as demonstrations and meetings; open-door meetings, sit-in protests, hunger strikes, opening stands, collecting petitions, concerts, festivals, distributing leaflets, hanging banners, carrying torches, conferences and so on are banned for 30 days as of January 27, 2021.

(01/262) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On January 25, 2021, 36 people are detained in operations covering 5 cities through an Istanbul based investigation; 10 people are detained in operations covering 13 cities through an Ankara based investigation and 35 people are detained in Izmir.

(01/263) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 134 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 681 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on January 26, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 7,103.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 25,344 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 2,442,350 as of January 26, 2021.
