(02/247) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from news coverage of February 27, 2025 that, disciplinary proceedings are initiated against 6 prisoners (Mehmet Aydın Söğüt, Savaş Koçyiğit, Necdet Tarla, Gıyasettin Aydın, Şiyar Kayadağ and Erdem Aktör) in Rize Kalkandere L Type Prison, for a quarrel between prisoners and wardens during ward search.

(02/248) Prisoner Deferred Release by Prison Administration and Observation Board…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 27, 2025 that, the release of Selman Esmer, a prisoner in Afyon T Type Prison No 1, who completed the execution of his life sentence on February 22, 2025, is postponed for 3 months by Prison Administration and Observation Board (CİGK) on the grounds of ‘not being in good behaviour’ and ‘lack of remorse’.

It is learned that the march of mine workers against the privatization of Çayırhan Thermal Power Plant and Mine in Nallıhan district of Ankara was prevented by gendarmerie.

On February 27, 2025, 22 people including Alaatin Köseler, Republican People’s Party (CHP) elected mayor of Beykoz district of Istanbul, are detained on the allegations of ‘bid rigging’.

Tevgera Jinên Azad (TJA) activist Rojbin Bor was detained on February 26, 2025 at Van Provincial Security Directorate where she went to give her statement through the investigation opened against her for a speech she made during the trustee protests in Van. Rojbin Bor was released the same day after her statement to the prosecutor’s office.

On February 26, 2025, 15 people including members of Istanbul Free Student Assembly are detained in house raids in Istanbul. It is learned that the investigation is confidential and lawyer visit restriction is imposed for 24 hours. The reason for detention could not be learned.

(02/253) Journalist on Trial in Adıyaman…

The first trial of the case against Ajansa Welat reporter Mahmut Altıntaş, for his social media posts, started on Adıyaman Heavy Penal Court No 2 on February 26, 2025. The indictment demands sentence for Mahmut Altıntaş on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. The court announced its verdict at the first hearing and sentenced the journalist to 1 year 6 months and 22 days in prison.

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against journalist Gökhan Yavuzel, on the grounds of ‘inciting hatred and hostility among the public’ through his social media post titled “The relationship between art and power”, was held on February 26, 2025 at Urfa Penal Court of First Instance No 4. The court acquitted Gökhan Yavuzel.

The trial of the case against journalist Abdullah Kaya for his news reports on the allegations that some village guards voted with their weapons in the May 14, 2023 general elections, continued on February 26, 2025 at Ağrı Diyadin Criminal Court of First Instance. The indictment demands sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘unlawful acquisition or dissemination of personal data’. The court adjourned the hearing to June 18, 2025.

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against LGBTI+ rights activist İris Mozalar due to a social media post criticizing the racist attacks against Syrian refugees/asylum seekers that started in Kayseri in July last year and continued across the country was held on February 26, 2025 at Istanbul 61st Criminal Court of First Instance. The court acquitted İris Mozalar, who was charged with ‘public incitement to hatred and hostility’ in the indictment.

Iris Mozalar was detained on July 10, 2024, arrested by the criminal court of peace on July 11, 2024 and released on July 12, 2024.

It is learned from news coverage of February 27, 2025 that, Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against CHP Sultangazi district chair Kemal Aysever and CHP Istanbul Youth Branch chair Erdem Kara, for the tension between CHP members and executives and the police in front of Çağlayan Courthouse where Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu’s trial was held.

On February 26, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of February 26, 2025 that, 21 proceedings demanding lift of impunity of 4 parliamentary members are sent to Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).

On February 26, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of February 26, 2025 that, 3 news reports on https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr/, https://www.ensonhaber.com/, https://www.mynet.com/ websites about the killing of a person who shared the footage of violence against a child in Adana on social media, by a person who reacted to him, are banned to access in accordance with Law No 5651.
