(04/325) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 3 soldiers (Yunus Kalkan, Fırat Canlı, Doğukan Korkmaz) died and 2 soldiers got wounded in the attacks during the “Claw-Lock” military operation into the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on April 26, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 26, 2022 that, 3 militants died in a clash between HPG militants and Turkish Armed Forces units in Zap area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 27, 2022 that, 1 militant died in a clash between HPG militants and Turkish Armed Forces units in the rural areas of Şırnak on April 25, 2022.

(04/326) Journalist Subjected to Physical Violence in Elazığ…

It is learned that Gazete Duvar reporter Ardıl Batmaz was subjected to physical violence of persons who were alleged to be the mayor’s personal guards, as he was reporting news in Elazığ on April 27, 2022.

Ardıl Batmaz stated the following to the press: “I was following the news due to the visits of the Interior Minister and the Minister of Environment and Urbanization to our city. While I was recording the citizens’ complaints to Elazig mayor in Mustafapaşa neighbourhood, a group of men in plain clothes, whose names I do not know and whom I guessed were bodyguards, tried to prevent me from recording. I was asked for my press card, they continued to prevent me from recording even though I showed them my press card. While I was still recording, the mayor said to me, “Take the camera down my friend”, and I declared to the mayor that I was a journalist. But the mayor pointed me as a target by saying, “I do not care”. Thereupon, the people I thought were his personal guards came upon me. They prevented me from recording, they bent my right hand and started to drag me. Two people in plain clothes took me from the area to another alley. Then three or four more men came. While I was about to be beaten here, a police officer came and intervened. Later, those people went away. I have nail marks on my neck and abdomen.”

It is learned from the news coverage of April 26, 2022 that, 2 prisoners who greeted each other in Kurdish, were subjected to verbal violence of the correction officers.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 26, 2022 that, the food given to prisoners in Istanbul Silivri L Type Prison No 7, sports rights of the prisoners were prevented and prisoners were subjected to verbal violence of the correction officers.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 27, 2022 that, Hayri Güler, a prisoner who was transferred from a prison in Diyarbakır to Tekirdağ F Type Prison No 2 under coercion, was subjected to strip search at the entrance of prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 26, 2022 that, Abdurrahman Yıldırım, an ill prisoner in Izmir Şakran T Type Prison was not receiving medical treatment and his regular medication was not given to him.

It is learned that the appeal made on April 26, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

(04/330) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the people protesting the court’s verdict in the Gezi case, in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on April 26, 2022 and detained 51 people by using physical violence and handcuffing them behind their backs. 50 of the detainees are released on the same day while 1 of them will be referred to the court through another investigation.

The police intervened the press declaration of Yasin Keskin, who demands to be reinstated to his job at Çankaya Municipality, outside of municipality building on April 26, 2022 and forced him away from the building by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 26, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police prevented the “Justice Watch” for ill prisoners, which was to be held in front of a prison in Van on April 26, 2022.

(04/334) Detained Co-Mayor and HDP Executives in Diyarbakır…

5 people including Meryem Yıldız, Ergani district mayor who was replaced by a trustee, and executives of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) who were detained in house raids in Ergani district of Diyarbakır on April 20, 2022, are released by the court on judicial control conditions on April 26, 2022.

(04/335) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The final trial of the case against Şener Levent, the editor-in-chief of Avrupa newspaper published in Cyprus, on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 63 on April 26, 2022. The court sentenced Şener Levent to 1 year, and then reduced it to 10 months and converted into a judicial fine of 9,000 Turkish Liras.

It is learned that a lawsuit was brought against Şener Levent in a court in Cyprus, on the grounds of a cartoon published in the newspaper, and the journalist was acquitted.

(04/336) Journalists, Writers and Others on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Bloomberg reporters Kerim Karakaya and Fercan Yalınkılıç who reported news on financial crisis and increasing exchange rates, and 36 people who shared and commented on these news reports on social media including Mustafa Sönmez, Merdan Yanardağ, Gazi Kozanoğlu, Sedef Kabaş, upon the official complaint of the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 3 on April 27, 2022.

The indictment demands jail penalty from 2 years to 5 years for 38 people, on the charge of ‘attempt to weaken financial order and stability of the state’.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded acquittal for 36 people. The court accepted time request of the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency lawyers and adjourned the trial to April 29, 2022.

(04/337) Former HDP MP on Trial…

The final trial of the case against former HDP Ağrı MP Halil Aksoy, for a speech he made, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 11 on April 27, 2022. The court sentenced Halil Aksoy to 1 year on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

(04/338) People on Trial in Eskişehir…

The final trial of the case against 16 people including 2 children, who have been detained by the police intervening the Pride March in Eskişehir on June 30, 2021, is held at Eskişehir Penal Court of First Instance No 8 on April 26, 2022.

It is learned that the lawyers’ requests for the trial to be held in a larger hall were rejected and that some of the rights defenders who wanted to watch the trial were not allowed into the courtroom. The court rejected the intervention request of the Eskişehir Bar Association Anti-Discrimination Commission. After defence hearings, the court decided to acquit 16 people.

(04/339) Investigation Against HDP MP…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 26, 2022 that, Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against HDP Urfa MP Ömer Öcalan, on the charge of “publicly degrading the Turkish Nation, the State of the Republic of Turkey, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the judicial bodies of the State” as defined in Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, by saying “Turkey’s life is not long” in a television programme he participated in.

(04/340) Terminated Scholarships for Participating in a Protest in Antalya…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 26, 2022, that the scholarships of 12 students of Akdeniz University from the Credit and Dormitories Institution (KYK) were terminated on the grounds that they participated in a press release on February 22, 2022 and in the Feminist Night March in the city.

(04/341) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On April 26, 2022, 23 people are detained in operations covering 16 cities through an Istanbul based investigation.

(04/342) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 14 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 2,511 as of April 26, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,720 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 15,023,662 as of April 26, 2022.
