(06/192) Interventions, Detentions, and Bans Targeting Pride Month…
On June 27, 2026, police intervened in the Pride March held in the Konak district of Izmir and detained 36 people using physical force. It was reported that all those detained were released after being fined under Article 32 of Law No. 5326 on Misdemeanors for “disobeying a lawful order.”
During police interventions at the 24th Istanbul Pride March held on June 28, 2026, in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul, 65 people—including 4 journalists—were detained using physical force. The 65 individuals were released on June 29, 2026, following their questioning by the police.
Prior to the Pride March in Istanbul, demonstrations and events in the Beyoğlu and Kadıköy districts of Istanbul were banned by the district governors’ offices. As part of the ban issued in the Beyoğlu district, it was reported that on June 28, 2026, certain roads around Taksim were closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and the Taksim Metro station and the Taksim-Kabataş Funicular Line were suspended. In Izmir, protests and events related to the 14th Pride March were banned by the governor’s office prior to the march.

It was reported that on March 28, 2026, four journalists covering the 24th Istanbul Pride March in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul were detained by police using physical force and were released on June 29, 2029, following their interrogations.
(06/194) Individuals Subjected to Police Intervention While Distributing Flyers in Istanbul…
Police intervened against individuals distributing leaflets regarding the “Freedom Rally” to be held in Istanbul’s Bağcılar district and detained six people using physical force. It was reported that one person sustained a head injury as a result of the intervention. Those detained were released by the magistrate’s court to which they were referred, subject to judicial supervision.

On June 25, 2026, Mayor Onur Yiğit, who was detained as part of an investigation targeting the Balçova district of Izmir, was released on June 28, 2026, by the magistrate’s court to which he was referred, subject to house arrest as a condition of judicial supervision. İzmir Metropolitan City Council member Doğuş Bayı, who was also detained as part of the same investigation, was released under judicial supervision; a person named E.A. was released after giving a statement to the prosecutor’s office.

Journalist Ali Çağatay, who was detained on June 25, 2026, on the grounds of a social media post related to the abduction of the General Manager of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Culture Inc., was detained on June 27, 2026, by the magistrate’s court to which he was referred, on charges of “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “insulting state institutions and organs.”

On June 28, 2026, 58 people detained in Ankara were remanded in custody by the magistrate’s court to which they were referred that same day.
Of the 225 people previously detained in Ankara, 178 were arrested, while 47 were released—15 under house arrest and 19 under other judicial supervision conditions.
Accordingly, the total number of people arrested in Ankara reached 236.

IIt was leaned from news reports on June 27, 2026, that Elif Önder, a member of the Turkish Workers’ Party who was detained in Niğde on the grounds of social media posts related to NATO, was arrested by the magistrate’s court to which she was referred on the charge of “making threats with the intent to create fear and panic among the public.”

Şebnem Ece Elmas, a member of the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF), was detained on June 28, 2026, at the Ankara Train Station on the grounds of an arrest warrant against her.

Tamar Tanrıyar, against whom an investigation was launched on the grounds of social media posts, was detained on June 29, 2026, in the Kuşadası district of Aydın on charges of “insulting the President” and “publicly disseminating misleading information.” It was reported that Tamar Tanrıyar would be taken to Istanbul.

According to news reports on June 28, 2026, the cruise ship Atlantis—carrying LGBTQ+ passengers and scheduled to arrive in Istanbul on July 8, 2026—was barred from entering the Istanbul port. It was reported that the ship changed its route following the ban.
According to news reports on June 29, 2026, the Aydın Governor’s Office banned the same ship from entering the port of Kuşadası, Aydın, on July 7, 2026, stating that “it is not possible for the group in question to come to Kuşadası as part of the specified type of event.”
According to news reports published on June 27, 2026, a party scheduled to take place on July 8, 2026, at the gay bar named Tek Yön in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district was banned, and the venue was sealed and closed by the Beyoğlu District Governor’s Office on the grounds of “practices and procedures contrary to the regulations. It was reported that prior to the closure decision, the venue had been targeted by homophobic groups and various newspapers.
