(10/252) TMA Chair and HRFT Board Member Detained…
Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, the Turkish Medical Association (TMA) chair and the HRFT executive board member, is detained in her house in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on October 26, 2022. It is learned that the reason for detention is the investigation of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office on Şebnem Korur Fincancı’s statements to a news channel. It is reported that Şebnem Korur Fincancı is taken to Ankara.
10/253) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Hakkari…
It is learned from the news coverage of October 26, 2022 that, a 16-year-old child (M. A., male) was detained by the soldiers in Sore village of Yüksekova district of Hakkari and was subjected to physical violence in the military vehicle. It is learned that M. A. was released on the same day and was not given a medical report evidencing the violence, in the hospital.

It is learned that journalist Diren Yurtsever who was detained in Istanbul on October 25, 2022 through the Ankara based investigation against Mezopotamya News Agency and Jinnews Agency reporters, was subjected to verbal violence in the police vehicle; and was threatened by the police saying “You mention psychological violence, now the physical torture will start and you will see then”, as she made it included in the medical report during health check.

It is learned on October 26, 2022 that some prisoners in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison started a 3-day hunger strike, regarding the allegations of chemical weapon usage of Turkish Armed Forces in the Claw-Lock military operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on October 24, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

Journalist Mehmet Günhan is detained in Manisa on October 25, 2022 through an Ankara based investigation against Mezopotamya News Agency and Jinnews Agency.
It is learned that a detention warrant was issued against journalist Hayri Demir through the same investigation and that, Hayri Demir’s house in Ankara and his family’s house in Bitlis were raided and searched by the police.
Jinnews reporter Derya Ren who was detained in Diyarbakır, is arrested on October 25, 2022 on the grounds of a finalised court verdict and is taken to Diyarbakır Women’s Prison.
It is learned that the journalists who were detained in other cities were taken to Ankara on October 26, 2022 and detention period is extended for 1 day.

Cebrail Gündoğdu, who was detained in Menemen district of Izmir on October 22, 2022 and who was reported to be subjected to torture and ill-treatment during detention and in the open area that he was later taken to, is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on October 26, 2022.

The final trial of the case against journalist İnci Aydın, on the grounds of “targeting public officials in anti-terror activities” upon the complaint of retired military officer Musa Çitil regarding a news report published on Yeni Yaşam newspaper, is held at Aydın Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on October 26, 2022. The court acquitted İnci Aydın.

The trial of the case against 8 university students, for protesting the injunction taken by the rector appointed to Boğaziçi University by the President, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 60 on October 26, 2022. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for 4 people on the charge of “damaging public property”. The court adjourned the trial to November 23, 2022.

The final trial of the case against Murtaza Demir, founding chair of the Pir Sultan Abdal Cultural Association (PSAKD) on the grounds of an article and alleged social media posts is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 9 on October 25, 2022. The court sentenced Murtaza Demir to 1 year, 2 months and 17 days for ‘insulting the President’ and postponed the sentence.

The trial of the case against police officers Y. D. and U. Y. regarding the death of Murat Araç (19) is held at Gazipaşa Penal Court of First Instance on October 25, 2022. Murat Araç has lost his life after falling from the third floor of the Antalya Gazipaşa District Security Directorate where he was taken after being detained on December 4, 2017. The indictment demands 6 months to 2 years of sentence for 2 police officers on the charge of ‘abuse of power’. The court adjourned the trial to February 7, 2023.
