(06/210) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 25, 2019 that, 2 HPG militants died due to an air bombardment of Turkish Air Forces to Qandil area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on May 28, 2019; 2 militants died in a clash between HPG militants and security forces in rural areas of Bingöl’s Adaklı district on June 19, 2019.

(06/211) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 959 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on June 25, 2019 at 13.30, and at 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on June 25, 2019, 2 people (Nazan Bozkurt and Merve Demirel) and at 18.00 2 people (Acun Karadağ and Merve Demirel) were detained.

Thus in total 4 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on June 25, 2019. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

The police intervened the sit-in protest of Cemal Yıldırım who rally to regain his job from which he had been dismissed by state of emergency decree, in Sakarya Street of Ankara on June 25, 2019 and detained him. It is learned that Cemal Yıldırım was released on the same day.

People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Yenişehir district co-chair Ömer Doğan, who was detained on the grounds of social media posts in Mersin on June 21, 2019; is arrested by the court on June 25, 2019.

(06/214) Detained HDP Member in Diyarbakır…

People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Youth Assembly member Ümit Akbıyık is detained in Diyarbakır Bus Terminal on June 25, 2019. The reason of detention is unknown.

(06/215) Detained Lawyers and Others in Istanbul…

6 of 7 people including 4 lawyers who were detained in the police raid to People’s Law Office in Istanbul on June 20, 2019 are arrested by the court on June 25, 2019. 1 person (Özhan Aslan) is released. The names of arrested people are: Lawyers Ebru Timtik, Ayşegül Çağatay, Görkem Ağdede, Nadide Özdemir and Gülser Sarıgül, Kamile Kayır.

(06/216) Gezi Case…

The first trial of the case against Osman Kavala, Yiğit Aksakoğlu, Ali Hakan Altınay, Ayşe Mücella Yapıcı, Ayşe Pınar Alabora, Can Dündar, Çiğdem Mater Utku, Gökçe Yılmaz, Handan Meltem Arıkan, Hanzade Hikmet Germiyanoğlu, İnanç Ekmekçi, Mehmet Ali Alabora, Mine Özerden, Şerafettin Can Atalay, Tayfun Kahraman and Yiğit Ali Ekmekçi, for Gezi Park protests in 2013, is held on June 24, 2019. The trials continued on June 25, 2019.

The indictment demands heavy life imprisonment for 16 people on the charge of ‘attempting to abolish the government of the Republic of Turkey or to prevent it from fulfilling its duties’. The indictment also demands sentence for defendants on the charges of ‘qualified damage to property’, ‘possession or exchange of hazardous substances without permission’, ‘damaging places of worship and cemeteries’, ‘qualified robbery’, ‘injury’, ‘opposition to Law on the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Property No 2863’, and ‘opposition to Law for the Firearms and Knives and Other Tools No 6136’.

After defence hearings the court decided to release Yiğit Aksakoğlu and to continue detention of business person Osman Kavala and adjourned the trial to July 18, 2019.

Business person Osman Kavala was arrested on November 1, 2017. Yiğit Aksakoğlu was detained in operations in Istanbul on November 6, 2018 and was arrested on November 18, 2018.

(06/217) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

The separate cases against 2 academicians (Assoc. Professor Yasemin Özgün from Anadolu University and Assoc. Professor E.K.O. from Yüzüncüyıl University) for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 28 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ are held on June 25, 2019. The court adjourned both trials to October 15, 2019.

The case against Assist. Professor Mevlüt Yaprak from Trakya University for the same reason is held on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 25 on June 25, 2019. The court decided to send the case to Edirne Heavy Penal Court on the grounds of lack of venue.

The case against S.A. for the same reason is held on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 36 on June 25, 2019. The court decided to wait for the appeal of the academicians to the Constitutional Court and adjourned the trial to October 1, 2019.

(06/218) HDP MP and Former Co-Mayor on Trial in Batman…

The case against HDP Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress co-chair Leyla Güven and former c-mayor of Siirt, on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is held on Batman Heavy Penal Court No 2 on June 25, 2019. Tuncer Bakırhan refused to join the trial via sound and vision system. The court decided to separate the case against Tuncer Bakırhan and consolidate it with the case on Siirt Heavy Penal Court No 2. The court separated the case against Leyla Güven as well and decided to consolidate the case with the one Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9.

(06/219) Police Officer on Trial for Death of Ömer Barış Topkara in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 25, 2019 that, The Supreme Court reversed the 15 years of sentence given by Penal Department No 1 of Istanbul Regional Court to police officer H.D.S. for death of Ömer Barış Topkara (16). The Supreme Court stated that the reason of reversal is the fault in relation to the attributed offense and demanded jail sentence up to 9 years for H.D.S. on the charge of ‘causing death with conscious negligence’.

Ömer Barış Topkara and a friend of him were detained in a shopping mall in Esenyurt district of Istanbul on February 16, 2017 and were handcuffed to each other. Upon their attempt to run away after exiting the hospital where they were taken for health check the police have fired a warning shot into the air and the children have stopped afterwards. The police officer H.D.S. has hit Topkara at the head with his gun and the child has died due to gunfire after the impact. The local court has given 11 years and 8 months’ jail sentence for ‘killing with an eventual intention under unjust provocation’ and it was reversed by Penal Department No 1 of Istanbul Regional Court. Penal Department sentenced H.D.S. which sentenced H.D.S. to 15 years.

(06/220) Non-Prosecution Decision for the People Who Died Due to Being Hit by a Police Armoured Vehicle…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 25, 2019 that, Lice Public Prosecutor’s Office gave verdict of non-prosecution as a result of the investigation against police officer N.İ. about the case in which 5 people died due to being hit by an armoured vehicle. Mahmut Öner (74), Mevlüt Dağtaş (64), Abdulhamit Dağtaş (63), Fikri Demirbaş (53) and Zeynep Demirbaş (76) died in the car which was hit by an armoured vehicle in Lice district of Diyarbakır on June 20, 2017.

It is stated that the reason of non-prosecution is the report of Forensic Medicine Institution which claims the driver of the vehicle that was hit by the armoured vehicle as the primary negligent party.

(06/221) Investigation of Torture and Ill-Treatment Allegations Under Custody in Van…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 25, 2019 that, Erciş Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation about allegations of torture and ill-treatment in Van. It was claimed that Democratic Regions Party (DBP) district executives Recep Önal and Mekan Beder along with Hakan Bozdağ, who were detained by using physical violence, while they were taking photographs at a park in Erciş district of Van on April 5, 2019; were subjected to torture and ill-treatment in an office of Erciş Police Directorate under Sub-Governorate Office where they were taken. It is reported that the prosecutor’s office sent a writ to Erciş Gendarmerie Command and demanded detection of the surveillance cameras around the mentioned place that could cover the incident and to take the recordings of these cameras.

(06/222) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On June 25, 2019, 12 people including military members on active duty are detained in operations covering 10 cities through a Kocaeli based investigation; and 25 people including military members on active duty are detained in operations covering 18 cities through an Izmir based investigation.
