(01/201) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 25, 2023 that, 6 militants died in a clash between security forces and YJA Star militants in rural areas of Şırnak on January 22, 2023.

(01/202) Human Rights Defenders on Trial in Van…

The trial of the case against former Van-Hakkari Medical chamber chair and HRFT physician Hüseyin Yaviç and HRFT Van Center secretary Sevim Çiçek, on the grounds of “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations” is held at Van Penal Court of First Instance No. 4 on January 26, 2023. The court decided to send the case to the prosecutor for legal opinion and adjourned the trial to April 12, 2023.

On October 23, 2021, doctor Rümeysa Berin Şen lost her life in a traffic accident in Ankara. The Turkish Medical Association has organized nation-wide press declarations to commemorate her, but the police have intervened the one that held at Medical Faculty of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University and detained HRFT physician and former Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber chair Hüseyin Yaviç and HRFT Van Center secretary Sevim Çiçek.

(01/203) Co-Mayor on Trial in Hakkari…

The final trial of the case against Cihan Karaman, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-mayor of Hakkari who was replaced by a trustee, is held at Hakkari Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on January 26, 2023. Cihan Karaman attended the trial and made defence declaration. The court sentenced Cihan Karaman to 10 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ruled to arrest him. It is learned that Cihan Karaman was arrested after the court’s verdict.

(01/204) Investigation Against Bar Associations’ Chairs…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 26, 2023 that, an investigation was launched on the grounds of “degrading Turkish Nation, State of the Turkish Republic, Turkish Grand National Assembly, the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the judicial bodies of the State” in accordance with the Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, against the chairs of bar associations of Ağrı, Batman, Bingöl, Diyarbakır, Hakkari, Mardin, Muş, Siirt, Şanlıurfa, Şırnak, Tunceli and Van, for the declaration “We Must Defend Peace in All Circumstances” on November 21, 2022, regarding the air operations of the Turkish Armed Forces into Syria and Iraq.

(01/205) Investigation Against Journalist…

It is learned that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office against Yeni Yaşam newspaper’s editor-in-chief Osman Akın on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in the news reports and articles on the issue dated June 7, 2022, and that Osman Akın made his official statement on January 25, 2023.

It is learned that an investigation was launched against journalist Hale Gönültaş on the grounds of the news reports about a 14-year-old child under state protection who was forced to work in entertainment venues, and that Hale Gönültaş made her official statement on January 26, 2023.

(01/207) Person on Trial for Social Media Posts in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against a person named Merve Taşkın, on the grounds of photographs she shared on social media is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 55 on January 26, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Merve Taşkın on the charge of ‘obscenity’. The court acquitted Merve Taşkın.

(01/208) Yusuf Akın Case…

In the case regarding Yusuf Akın, who died on December 20, 2011 in Nusaybin district of Mardin during military operations, the court has given a verdict of acquittal. As the Constitutional Court has ruled that the right to live was violated, the case was sent to Mardin Heavy Penal Court No. 1 for retrial.

The retrial of the defendant soldiers K. E. O., S. T., B. Y., Y. E. K., D. G. at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No. 1 is held on January 26i 2023. The court decided to make an exploration at the crime scene on February 17, 2023 and adjourned the trial to March 28, 2023.

(01/209) Prison Massacre Case…

The trial of the case against 196 people who were on duty at Gendarmerie General Command during “Operation Back to Life”, which caused death of 12 people and injury of 29 in Bayrampaşa Prison, is held on Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court No. 13 on January 26, 2023. The operation which killed 32 people in 20 prisons in total was conducted to enable conversion of the prisons to F Type prisons and to end hunger strikes in prisons on December 19, 2000.

It is learned that Sadettin Tantan, the Interior Minister back then who was to be heard as witness did not attend the trial. The court adjourned the trial.

(01/210) Closure Case against HDP…

On January 26, 2023, the Constitutional Court rejected the request of HDP for the trial of the closure case to be postponed to post-election and decided that HDP will make its defence on March 14, 2023.

(01/211) Ban of Access to Web Contents…

It is learned that 2 articles of journalist Murat Ağırel published on https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr and 1 article published on https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No. 6 on January 24, 2023.

It is learned that the news reports about the Financial Crimes Investigation Board reports published on https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr, https://www.patronlardunyasi.com websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Ankara Gölbaşı Penal Court of Peace on January 25, 2023.
