(02/335) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 25, 2019 that 6 prisoners (Ramazan Çeper, Zerdeşt Oduncu, Adem Arslan, Hakan Adıgüzel, Derviş İsmail and Osman Şahin) who are on hunger strike in Edirne F Type Prison were not given vitamin B1. It is also stated in the news reports that prisoners were put into solitary cells and their radios were seized by prison administration. It is learned that prisoners on hunger strike were penalised with prohibition from communication rights as a result of disciplinary proceedings against them.

(02/336) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 838 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on February 25, 2019 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on February 25, 2019, 2 people (Acun Karadağ and Mehmet Dersulu) and at 18.00 3 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Mehmet Dersulu and Cemal Öksüz) were detained. It is learned that Nazan Bozkurt was subjected to physical violence of the police at the press declaration at 18.00.

Thus in total 5 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on February 25, 2019. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(02/337) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the protestors in front of Çankaya Public Health Directorate on February 25, 2019, who rally to regain their jobs from which they had been dismissed by state of emergency decrees, and detained 5 people (Mahmut Konuk, Gülnaz Bozkurt, Alev Şahin and 2 more people). It is learned that 5 people were released the same day. It is also learned that Alev Şahin was injured at leg during intervention.

(02/338) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the public employees who make a sit-in protest at Bakırköy Square on February 25, 2019, who rally to regain their jobs from which they had been dismissed by state of emergency decrees, and detained 2 people (Nursel Tanrıverdi, Selvi Polat) by using physical violence. It is learned that Nursel Tanrıverdi and Selvi Polat are arrested by the court on the same day, on the grounds of ‘opposition to Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’ and ‘violating judicial control conditions’.

(02/339) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

Türkan Albayrak, who was dismissed from her job at Sarıyer district Health Department, on the grounds of ‘personnel security investigation’ and ‘archive search’, on August 3, 2018; made a press declaration to regain her job on February 25, 2019, and attempted for a sit-in protest in front of Health Department. The police intervened into the sit-in and detained Türkan Albayrak. It is learned that Türkan Albayrak was released the same day. It is the 91st time of detention of Türkan Albayrak.

(02/340) Prevention of an Event in Istanbul…

It is learned that the press declaration of Marmara Prison Solidarity Initiative, for the hunger strikes in prison, to be held in front of Bakırköy Women’s Prison on February 25, 2019, was prevented by the police on the grounds of Governorate’s interdiction.

(02/341) The Case Against People Evacuated from Nusaybin…

The case against 53 people who were detained and then arrested during the curfew on Nusaybin district, on Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 4 is held on February 25, 2019.

It is learned that no audience were permitted in the court room on the grounds of lack of space, and that defendants and their lawyers protested this. The court board paused the trial and decided to separate the case for each defendant and to start proceedings all over again with new case files.

It is learned that the lawyers made official complaint to Mardin Public Prosecutor’s Office on the charges of ‘misuse of duty’ and ‘forgery of documents’.

(02/342) The Case Against Writer Fikret Başkaya…

It is learned that the indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against writer Fikret Başkaya, for his article “Actual Terror is State’s Terror” which was published on Özgür Üniversite website on November 7, 2016, is accepted by Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 21. The indictment demands sentence for Fikret Başkaya on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

The first trial of the case will be held on March 21, 2019.

(02/343) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On February 25, 2019, it is learned that a detention warrant is issued against 101 people including 1 major and 3 lieutenants, through an Ankara based investigation against Land Forces Command personnel. It is learned that operations are initiated to detain those people.

On February 25, 2019, a detention warrant is issued against 18 people including military members on active duty, through an Adana based investigation. It is learned that operations are initiated in 12 cities to detain those people.

On February 25, 2019, a detention warrant is issued against 9 health workers including those dismissed by state of emergency decrees. It is learned that operations are initiated to detain those people.

166 of 237 people including 2 colonels, 1 lieutenant colonel, 8 majors and 10 lieutenants who were detained in February 22, 2019 and following days, are arrested by the court on February 25, 2019. 22 people are released on judicial control conditions. 49 people who were detained through the same investigation has been released on judicial control conditions earlier.

(02/344) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against Mustafa Akkuş, former member of the Supreme Court, is held on Penal Department No 9 of the Supreme Court, on February 25, 2019. The court sentenced Mustafa Akkuş to 10 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.
