(04/279) HRFT Cizre Representative Dr. Serdar Küni’s Case…

On October 19, 2016, Dr. Serdar Küni, HRFT Cizre Representative and former Şırnak Chamber of Medicine chair, has been arrested and Şırnak Heavy Penal Court No 2 has sentenced him for ‘aiding and abetting an illegal organisation on purpose’. The court’s verdict was reversed by Antep Regional Court.

On April 25, 2018, Dr. Serdar Küni is again on trial on Şırnak Heavy Penal Court No 2. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to September 24, 2018 to complete the case file.

(04/280) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

Diyarbakır Governorate made a declaration and announced that 1 soldier died and 4 soldiers got injured in clashes between security forces and HPG militants in rural areas of Diyarbakır’s Lice district on April 25, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage of April 25, 2018 that 8 militants died in a clash in rural areas of Tunceli on December 15, 2017.

(04/281) People Subjected to Physical Violence in Courtroom in Antalya…

It is learned from news coverage of April 25, 2018 that Emrecan Demir and Hasan Demir were subjected to the physical violence of gendarmerie and police on the trial of the case against Emrecan Demir on Antalya Heavy Penal Court No 8 on April 11, 2018. It is reported that Emrecan Demir, was on trial as arrested and was interrupted by the chief judge during his defence. As a result, a debate raised in which security forces intervened Emrecan Demir and his father Hasan Demir. The court board got Emrecan Demir and Hasan Demir off the courtroom and decided on continuation of detention. Also the court decided to issue an official complaint about Emrecan Demir’s defence and adjourned the trial to May 11, 2018.

It is learned that Hasan Demir was detained afterwards, and released on juridical control conditions by the court the next day.

(04/282) Police Officer on Trial for Using Physical Violence to 2 People in Izmir…

On August 10, 2017, 2 women, Derya Kılıç and Seray Güven, were subjected to abuse of 2 people on motorbike in Alsancak, Izmir and asked police for help. Police officer Orhan Yarcel’s “You deserve more with this outfit, look at yourselves” expressions raised a debate and Orhan Yarcel used violence to Derya Kılıç, who had a cast on her leg and to Seray Güven.

The case against Orhan Yarcel on Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 26 for ‘insult’ and ‘misfeasance’ continued to be held on April 25, 2018. Barış Bilen Hatal, a witness, stated that the police officer used unproportional force on Derya Kılıç. One of Orhan Yarcel’s fellow workers also gave a witness statement. The court adjourned the trial to October 19, 2018 for witness hearings and detailed video footage investigation.

(04/283) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from news coverage of April 23, 2018 that a prisoner named Coşkun Şimşek was subjected to serious physical violence during ward search in Şakran T Type Prison No 2 and his right leg was broken due to violence. It is also reported that another prisoner, Ulaş İnci was injured at right shoulder and was put into single cell as handcuffed behind the back.

(04/284) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 25, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on April 25, 2018, 4 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Ecem Polat, Gülnaz Bozkurt and Mehmet Dersulu) and at 18.00 5 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Gülnaz Bozkurt, Mehmet Dersulu, Mahmut Konuk and Bülent Özgür) were detained. It is learned that the police used plastic bullets against supporters during the intervention.

Thus in total 9 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on April 25, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(04/285) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the workers’ protest on Istanbul Bogazici Bridge on April 25, 2018 and detained 4 workers and 1 journalist. The workers had been protesting the company that do not pay their wages for a while. It is learned that another protest was organized in front of the company’s headquarters and 3 people were detained there as well. It is reported that the detainees were released the same day. This was the 7th time that workers were intervened.

(04/286) People Detained for ‘Social Media Posts’ in Urfa…

5 of 11 people who were detained for ‘social media posts’ in Viranşehir district of Urfa on April 18, 2018, are arrested by the court for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ on April 24, 2018. 6 people are released on juridical control conditions.

(04/287) Journalists on Trial in Hatay…

The case against Erdoğan Alayumat and Nuri Akman, reporters of DİHABER which was closed down by the state of emergency decree, for ‘providing classified state information for political and military spying purposes’ and ‘being an illegal organisation member’, on Hatay Heavy Penal Court No 2, continued to be held on April 25, 2018. Erdoğan Alayumat attended the trial and made his defence in Kurdish. Another journalist made a witness statement. After defence hearings the court decided on continuation of detention for Erdoğan Alayumat and adjourned the trial to May 23, 2018.

It is learned that 8 people are detained in house raids through “DHKP-C Investigation” in Istanbul on April 25, 2018.

(04/289) Cumhuriyet Newspaper Case…

The final trial of the case against 20 defendants (2 of them are arrested) including Akın Atalay, chief executive officer, journalist-columnist Kadri Gürsel, journalist Ahmet Şık from Cumhuriyet newspaper, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 27 is held on April 25, 2018.

The court sentenced Atalay, Orhan Erinç, Murat Sabuncu, Kadri Gürsel, Güray Öz, Musa Kart, Aydın Engin, Hikmet Çetinkaya, Ahmet Şık, Mustafa Kemal Güngör, Hakan Kara, Önder Çelik, Ahmet Kemal Aydoğdu, Emre İper and Bülent Utku to jail penalties differing from 2 years and 6 months to 10 years for ‘aiding an illegal organisation’. The court acquitted 3 people, and decided to separate of the cases of Can Dündar and İlhan Tanır, to release Akın Atalay, on continuation of detention for Ahmet Kemal Aydoğdu and juridical control conditions for all sentenced defendants.

(04/290) Journalists on Trial…

The final trial of the case against journalist İsmail Küçükkaya and lawyer Fidel Okan, on the grounds of ‘insulting a public officer publicly’ and ‘insulting the institutions of Republic of Turkey’ for the news report on Minister of Family and Social Policies Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya’s husband, on Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No 18 is held on April 25, 2018. The court sentenced İsmail Küçükkaya and Fidel Okan to 16 months and 20 days and postponed the sentence.

(04/291) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On April 25, 2018, in operations covering 19 cities through a Muğla based investigation 15 people including military members on active duty, in operations covering 26 cities through an Aksaray based investigation 41 people including military members on active duty, in operations covering 10 cities through a Zonguldak based investigation 10 military members on active duty, and 1 person in Ankara for ‘being Sivas confidential imam of the illegal organisation’ are detained.

17 of 27 people who were detained through an Aydın based investigation are arrested by the court on April 25, 2018. It is also learned that 5 people are released on juridical control conditions and 5 people are still under custody.

Zafer Kılınç, a former prosecutor dismissed by state of emergency decree, who was detained in Edirne while attempting to illegally flee to Greece is arrested by the court on April 25, 2018.

(04/292) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against former Executive Officer of Diyarbakır Gendarmerie Command, Colonel Şamil Türk Özkan on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 is held on April 25, 2018. The court sentenced Şamil Türk Özkan to life time for ‘violating the Constitution’.

Diyarbakır Governorate made a declaration on April 25, 2018 and announced curfew on 10 villages and 40 hamlets of Lice district as of April 25, 2018 until further notice. Villages and hamlets under curfew are: Yalımlı, Akçabudak, Ulucak, Kılıçlı, Yorulmaz, Güldiken, Baharlar, Üçdamlar, Yaprakköy, Yünlüce villages; Keşkuvari, Çiftlik, Leyhosor, Mahmutlu, Tahtakülek, Ballıca, Mahmudan, Yeniyazı, Hij, Gözeli, Dergan, Alıçlıyayla, Buban, Kaynaktaşı, Dokuzkat, Aliyan, Abdurrahmanağa, Aşağıhodik, Konuklu, Perpank, Yeşilburç, Kilimli, Gelberi, Bilgin, Hegogözer, Koçmarin, Mehmedil, Sağlık, Gönen, Hamzabey, Sıkas, Guçik, Eskiköy, Semezi, Yaka, Karaç, Kayadibi, Baverda and Kumumirza hamlets.

Diyarbakır Governorate made a declaration on April 25, 2018 and announced curfew on 7 villages and 13 hamlets of Kulp district as of April 25, 2018 until further notice. Villages and hamlets under curfew are: Ağıllı, Akdoruk, Ağaçlı, Aşağıelmalı, Çağlayan, Kaynakköy, Karpuzlu villages; Ağıllı, Derecik, Harabe, Güldiken, Dirlik, Kefan, Yukarıelmalı, Deveboynu, Astal, Işıklar, Gümüşsuyu, Soğanlı and Çotuk hamlets.

It is learned from news coverage of April 25, 2018 that Nihat Behram’s book “Ser Verip Sır Vermeyen Yiğit” is banned again after 25 years since the court’s acquittal about the case.
