(04/184) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from news coverage of April 25, 2025 that three prisoners (İsmail Barka, Hakkari Aydoğdu, and Ertan Ören) who were transferred from Trabzon Beşikdüzü T-Type Prison to Erzincan High Security Prison against their will and without their consent were subjected to forced strip searches upon entering the prison and were physically assaulted for refusing to comply.

It is learned from news coverage of April 27, 2025 that, prisoners who refused to undergo oral searches at Tokat T-Type Prison were not transferred to the hospital.

It is learned from news coverage of April 27, 2025 that, the release of Mehmet Sayılgan, an inmate held at Tokat T-Type Prison who had completed his sentence on March 25, 2025, was postponed for six months by the Prison Administration and Observation Board (CİGK).

It is learned from news coverage of April 25, 2025 that, three prisoners (İsmail Barka, Hakkari Aydoğdu, and Ertan Ören) who were transferred from Trabzon Beşikdüzü T-Type Prison to Erzincan High Security Prison against their will and subjected to physical violence for refusing to undergo a strip search upon entering the prison It has been reported that the prisoners on hunger strike have been placed in solitary confinement.

On April 25, 2025, police intervened in a march in Ankara’s Çankaya district, detaining 29 people using physical violence.
It was reported that a transgender woman was also detained by police using physical violence during the intervention.
Of the 29 detained individuals, 4 were arrested by the criminal court of peace on April 27, 2025, after being referred there. 25 others were released, 7 of them under judicial supervision. The names of the arrested individuals could not be determined.

BirGün reporter Havva Gümüşkaya was detained on April 25, 2025, while covering a march in the Çankaya district of Ankara. Havva Gümüşkaya was released the same day after giving a statement to the police.

On April 26, 2025, within the scope of an investigation targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), 51 people, including Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (İSKİ) General Manager Şafak Başa, Bakırköy Deputy Mayor and İBB Council member Ali Rıza Akyüz, and İBB Bosphorus Urban Planning Director Elçin Karaoğlu, were detained on allegations of corruption.

Yiğit Gökçehan Koçoğlu, the lawyer of Mehmet Pehlivan, who is the lawyer of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who has been detained on charges of “attempting to influence the trial” and “violating the confidentiality of the investigation,” surrendered to the Istanbul Security Directorate on April 25, 2025. The indictment seeks the defendants’ punishment for “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911.” The court postponed the hearing to October 15, 2025.

The Ankara Governor’s Office issued a statement regarding footage showing a trans woman being subjected to physical violence by police during a police intervention at a march in the Çankaya district of Ankara on April 25, 2025, stating the following: “It has been determined that some press and social media outlets have published images showing ‘male police officers allegedly arresting a female individual while part of her body was visible.’ Following an investigation and analysis of the footage, it was determined that the individual in question is a male named M.B., born in 1998, who covered his face with a red scarf during the incident. He was wearing jeans, a leather jacket, and a T-shirt. However, during the arrest, the individual resisted the police, resulting in footage showing him wearing women’s undergarments.”

The Şırnak Governor’s Office announced on April 26, 2025, that the Bestler Dereler Region within the borders of the Central District of Şırnak Province, the Gabar Mountain Region within the borders of the Central District and Güçlükonak District of Şırnak Province, the Cudi Mountain Region within the borders of the Central District, Silopi, and Cizre Districts of Şırnak Province, the Kurt Dağı Region within the borders of the Central District of Şırnak Province, the Kurt Mountain Region located within the borders of the Central District, Silopi, and Uludere districts of Şırnak Province, the Kelmehmetler-Dönmezler-Kovankaya, Tahtareş, Hüsrevpaşa-Suhurpaşayayla, and İncebeldağları Regions located within the borders of the Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak Province, Faraşin Regions, the Altındağları Region within the borders of the Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak Province, and the Oymakaya Region located within the borders of the Beytüşşebap and Uludere districts of Şırnak Province, have been declared temporary special security zones for a period of 15 days from April 27, 2025, to May 11, 2025, and unauthorized entry into these regions is prohibited.
