(10/239) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Izmir…

It is learned that Cebrail Gündoğdu, who was detained in Menemen district of Izmir on October 22, 2022, was subjected to torture and ill-treatment during detention and in the open area to where he was later taken.

The Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) Izmir branch stated the following: “During detention, he was said ‘We wish you have could run away and give us the chance to kill you’ and was taken to a mountain range near Evka-5 neighbourhood, he was stripped naked and tortured there. Apart from the two civilian vehicles at first, 6-7 more civilian vehicles came to the area later, and he was beaten by all state officials who are estimated to be undercover officials. During this period of about two hours, a cloth was put on his head, he was handcuffed twice behind his back, and torture continued in this way. His clothes were torn and he was threatened to death. He was brought to Izmir Security Directorate after the torture in the mountainous area (…) As a result of this torture, his right eardrum burst, bruises in his eyes and wounds appeared on many parts of his body. There was a haemorrhage in the ear, which was considered to be a cerebral haemorrhage. During his medical examination, he was told that he might have a bone fracture in his face. Traces of torture are visibly evident (…) When he was taken to the medical examination, he was in handcuffs behind his back from time to time, and the doctor’s examination was carried out with the law enforcement officers present in the room, despite his request.”

(10/240) Journalist Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment in Ankara…

It is learned that journalist Berivan Altan, whose house in Ankara was raided by the police on October 25, 2022 through the investigation against Mezopotamya News Agency and Jinnews Agency, was handcuffed behind her back and forced to lie on the ground, and was subjected to verbal violence during that time. It is reported that 2 journalists who were also in the house were handcuffed behind their backs and forces to lie on the ground.

(10/241) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 24, 2022 that, Nagehan Yüksel, a prisoner who was transferred from Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison to Eskişehir L Type Prison was subjected to strip search at the entrance of prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 24, 2022 that, Hatice Kaymak, a prisoner who was transferred from Mersin Tarsus Women’s Prison to Antalya Alanya L Type Prison was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the correction officers.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 25, 2022 that, 15 prisoners who were transferred to Antalya Alanya L Type Prison were threatened by the prison director saying “We will put you in order, they sent you here on purpose”.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 25, 2022 that, political prisoners in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison were subjected to physical violence of the correction officers during a ward search and prisoners’ personal belongings were confiscated.

(10/242) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned on October 24, 2022 that 3 prisoners (Muhammed Kartal, Kasım Aslan, Masum Karaman) in Diyarbakır High Security Prison No. 1 started a 5-day hunger strike in turns, regarding the allegations of chemical weapon usage of Turkish Armed Forces in the Claw-Lock military operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

(10/243) Detained Journalists in Ankara, İstanbul, Van, Diyarbakır, Urfa and Mardin…

It is learned that detention warrants were issued against 14 people through an Ankara based investigation against Mezopotamya News Agency and Jinnews Agency on October 25, 2022. 11 journalists including Mezopotamya News Agency executive editor are detained in house raids in Diyarbakır, Ankara, Istanbul, Van, Urfa and Mardin.

Detained journalists are: Mezopotamya News Agency executive editor Diren Yurtsever, Mezopotamya News Agency reporters Deniz Nazlım, Selman Güzelyüz, Zemo Ağgöz, Berivan Altan, Hakan Yalçın, Emrullah Acar and Ceylan Şahinli, Jinnews reporters Habibe Eren, Öznur Değer, Derya Ren.

It is learned that the computers, cameras and books in the raided houses were confiscated by the police.

It is reported that Zemo Ağgöz, who was detained in Ankara, has a 45-days-old baby and will breastfeed her baby with the permission of the prosecutor’s office.

It is learned that the detained journalists are restricted from lawyer visit for 24 hours and those who were detained in other cities will be taken to Ankara.

(10/244) Detained CHP Executive in Ankara…

The Republican People’s Party (CHP) US representative Yurter Özcan is detained, on the grounds of not making his official statement through the case against him, at the hotel he stayed in Ankara on October 25, 2022. Yurter Özcan is released after statement procedures on the same day.

(10/245) Detained People in Mersin…

It is learned that 13 people are detained on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in house raids in Mersin on October 25, 2022.

(10/246) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Bismil district co-mayor Gülşen Özer is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 11 on October 24, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for Gülşen Özer on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to February 6, 2023.

Gülşen Özer was detained on March 16, 2022 and was arrested on March 20, 2022. She was released from prison by the court on May 30, 2022.

(10/247) Association Chair on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of the case against Yüksel Almas, co-chair of MEBYA-DER (Association of People Lost Their Relatives in the Cradle of Civilizations), is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 9 on October 24, 2022. The local court has sentenced Yüksel Almas to 10 years on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ but Diyarbakır Regional Court has overturned the local court’s verdict. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of Yüksel Almas and adjourned the trial to November 16, 2022.

Yüksel Almas was detained on February 27, 2021 and was arrested on March 9, 2021.

(10/248) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 13 people including 2 journalists for a protest held in front of Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison on May 10, 2019; is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 23 on October 25, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to February 7, 2023.

(10/249) Investigation Against Lawyer in Izmir…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 24, 2022 that, Izmir Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against lawyer Aryen Turhan, over her expressions at the General Assembly of Izmir Bar Association where she spoke on behalf of the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) on October 22, 2022. It is learned that the investigation was opened over her expressions regarding the allegations of chemical weapon usage of Turkish Armed Forces in the Claw-Lock military operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government, and the slogan “Jin jiyan azadi” (Woman, life, freedom) she chanted.

(10/250) People on Trial for ‘Insulting the President’ in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Gülsüm Elvan and Sami Elvan, mother and father of Berkin Elvan who has lost his life after being shot by the police using gas canister during Gezi Park protests, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 43 on October 25, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘insulting the President’. Gülsüm Elvan attended the trial and made their defence declarations. The court adjourned the trail to March 16, 2023.

(10/251) Police Raid to News Agency Office in Ankara…

It is learned that Mezopotamya News Agency Ankara office was raided by the police on October 25, 2022, through the Ankara based investigation against Mezopotamya News Agency and Jinnews Agency; and that the computers, cameras, and books were confiscated by the police.
