(11/272) Male Violence Monitoring Report for 2020…

According to “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet which was published on November 24, 2020, at least 253 women were killed by men between January 1 – November 21, 2020. In the first 21 days of November 20202, at least 24 women were killed by men, at least 45 women were subjected to violence.

(11/273) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of November 24, 2020 that, Ferhat Demirbaş, a prisoner in Kayseri Bünyan T Type Prison No 1, was subjected to disciplinary proceedings for he gave information to press and to Peoples’ Democratic Society (HDP) Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, about the situation of the prison within Covid-19 pandemic. It is reported that Ferhat Demirbaş was penalised with prevention of contact and non-contact visits for a month.

(11/274) Police Intervention to Workers’ Protest in Kocaeli…

The police intervened the workers gathering in front of United Metalworkers’ Union (Birleşik Metal-İş) office in Gebze on November 24, 2020 and detained 109 people including union members, managers and politicians, by using physical violence. The workers were gathering in order to march from Gebze district of Kocaeli to Ankara, to protest dismissal without compensation and unpaid leave practices. Detained people are released after statement procedures at the police on the same day.

Mezopotamya News Agency reporter Dindar Karataş is detained in a house raid in Van on November 24, 2020. The reason of detention is unknown. It is learned that Dindar Karataş will be restricted to see his lawyer for 24 hours.

(11/276) Detained People in Bitlis…

On November 24, 2020, 5 people (Orhan Durak, Ejder Yoldaş, Ergin Savaş, İmdat Tokmak and Hüseyin Göktaş) are detained in house raids in Bitlis. The reason of detention is unknown.

(11/277) Detained Person in Diyarbakır…

On November 24, 2020, a person named Suna Balta who had a dispute with people having a sit-in protest in front of HDP’s provincial office in Diyarbakır, is detained by the police upon complaint of these protesters.

(11/278) HDP MP on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against HDP Diyarbakır MP Feleknas Uca, on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on November 24, 2020.

The lawyer of Feleknas Uca demanded end of proceedings, based on the Constitutional Court decision for Republican People’s Party (CHP) MP Enis Berberoğlu. The court adjourned the trial to April 8, 2021.

(11/279) Writer Temel Demirer on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against writer Temel Demirer, on the charge of ‘praising offence and offender’ is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 33 on November 24, 2020. The court adjourned the trial to March 30, 2021.

(11/280) Prisoners’ Family Members on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against 6 people (Zeynep Calıhan, Türkiye Bozkurt, Cemile Çiftçi, Latife Buğday, Erdihan Erol and Hazal Taş) who have family members in prison; is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 34 on November 24, 2020. The case is for the sit-in protest that prisoners’ family members had in front of Gebze Women’s Prison, to draw attention to hunger strikes in prisons in 2019, which were to demand an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan.

The indictment demands sentence for 6 people on the charge of ‘violation of the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’.

After defence hearings the court ruled to summon one defendant (Erdihan Erol) to the court forcefully, and adjourned the trial to December 1, 2020.

(11/281) People on Trial in Adana…

The final trial of the case against 11 people, for participating in a march in Adana, is held on November 24, 2020. The march was organized to call people to the “Peace Meeting” of Confederation of Public Employees Trade Unions (KESK), Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions (DISK), Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), Turkish Medical Association (TTB) on October 10, 2015 in Ankara.

The court sentenced 4 people to 2 years each and 7 people to 3 years each on the charge of ‘violation of the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’.

(11/282) HDP Executive on Trial in Mardin…

The first trial of the case against Filiz Işık, former HDP co-chair in Midyat district, is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2 on November 24, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for Filiz Işık on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

Filiz Işık attended the trial and made her defence. The court decided to continue detention of Filiz Işık and adjourned the trial to February 18, 2021.

Filiz Işık was detained on September 23, 2020 and was arrested by the court on September 24, 2020.

(11/283) People on Trial in Mardin…

The final trial of the case against 8 people who were detained during the curfew in Derik district of Mardin in 2015, is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2 on November 24, 2020.

The court sentenced 3 people (Aladin Ecer, Suphi Söylemez and Gebar Denli) to 12 years each on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’; 5 people (Barış Aksın, Doğan Özbahçeci, Fırat Özdemir, Mehmet Ejder Tur, Serhat Dursun) to heavy life imprisonment on the charge of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’. The court decided to continue detention of 8 people.

(11/284) Investigation Against Former Parliamentary Member…

It is learned that Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against Galip Ensarioğlu, former Diyarbakır MP of Justice and Development Party (AKP). It is learned that the investigation is about the condolence meeting of a YPG militant in which Galip Ensarioğlu has participated. It is reported that Galip Ensarioğlu made his official statement at Diyarbakır Courthouse on November 24, 2020.

(11/285) Police Raid to News Agency Office in Van…

On November 24, 2020, the office of Mezopotamya News Agency in Van is raided by the police. It is learned that the personal computers at the office were seized after the search conducted by the police. Mezopotamya News Agency office in Van was raided once again on October 6, 2020 and all cameras were seized.

(11/286) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On November 24, 2020, 1 person is detained on a warrant in Antep.

On November 24, 2020, 2 of 3 people who were detained in Edirne in an alleged attempt to illegally cross to Greece, are arrested by the court on the same day. It is learned that 1 person is still under custody.

(11/287) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 161 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 7,381 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on November 24, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 12,672 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 460,916 as of November 24, 2020.

It is learned that 3 health workers (doctor Hüseyin Süyür in Antep, electrical technician Hakan Arkun in Adana Seyhan Public Hospital and emergency service staff Süleyman Gökdemir in Erzurum) died from Covid-19 on November 24, 2020.

It is learned from the news coverage of November 24, 2020 that 11 prisoners in Izmir Şakran T Type Prison No 1 tested positive for Covid-19.
