(05/233) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Bircan Kapılay) died and 2 soldiers got wounded in an attack during the “Claw-Lock” military operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on May 24, 2022.

(05/234) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Ankara on May 24, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(05/235) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against co-executive editor Eren Keskin and managing editor Reyhan Çapan from Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on May 24, 2022. The court sentenced Eren Keskin and Reyhan Çapan to 12,050 Turkish Liras each. Eren Keskin and Reyhan Çapan were sentenced to a penalty fine of 10,461 Turkish Liras in the regarding the news reports about Berkin Elvan, but the local court’s verdict was found insufficient and reversed by the Court of Cassation.

(05/236) Actress on Trial in Ankara…

The retrial of the case against actress Ezgi Mola, for a social media post about specialised sergeant Musa Orhan, who is charged with sexual assault to a child, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 31 on May 25, 2022. The court has sentenced Ezgi Mola to a penalty fine of 5,200 Turkish Liras on the charge of ‘insult’, and the court’s verdict was overturned upon objection. The court sentenced Ezgi Mola to a judicial fine of 6,960 Turkish Liras.

A child named Ipek Er committed suicide after she was subjected to sexual assault by specialised sergeant Musa Orhan in Beşiri district of Batman, and lost her life in hospital on August 18, 2020.

The first trial of the case against journalist Gençağa Karafazlı, for his news report about harassment allegations against an academic working at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University, is held at Rize Penal Court of First Instance No 4 on May 24, 2022. After defence hearings, the court adjourned the trial to September 27, 2022.

(05/238) Musicians on Trial in Adana…

The trial of the case against musicians İlyas Arzu and Jiyan Savcı is held at Adana Heavy Penal Court No 2 on May 25, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court adjourned the trial to September 3, 2022.

(05/239) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against Nuriye Gülmen, an academician who was dismissed from her job by a state of emergency decree and was holding “I Want My Job Back” protests in Ankara, and Yasemin Karadağ, an employee of İdil Cultural Center, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 28 on May 25, 2022.

The court sentenced Nuriye Gülmen to 10 years and Yasemin Karadağ to 12 years on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. It is learned that the audience were forcibly taken out of the courtroom by the police using physical violence, as they reacted to the decision, and that journalists were prevented from recording.

Nuriye Gülmen and Yasemin Karadağ, who were among the 6 people detained in the police raid on the İdil Cultural Center in Istanbul on August 5, 2020, were arrested by the court on August 11, 2020.

(05/240) Constitutional Court Decision on Physical Violence of the Police…

The Constitutional Court (AYM) adjudicated on the individual application of Nuray Zencir, who was subjected to physical violence by the police during a protest she attended in İzmir in 2015, and the criminal complaint she made was resulted in non-prosecution decision. The Constitutional Court’s decision is published in the Official Gazette on May 24, 2022, and it is stated that “the prohibition of treatment incompatible with human dignity has been violated in terms of its material and procedural dimensions” and that 90,000 TL of non-pecuniary damages will be paid to Nuray Zencir. The decision will be sent to İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for a new investigation to be conducted to eliminate the consequences of the violation.

(05/241) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 6 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 1,304 as of May 24, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,939 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 15,065,474 as of May 24, 2022.
