(03/231) Prisoner Died in Hospital…

It is learned that Abdullah Boran, an 80-year-old ill prisoner who was kept in Diyarbakır D Type Closed Prison and was under treatment at Gazi Yaşargil Research and Education Hospital lost his life on March 23, 2022. It is claimed in the news reports that Abdullah Boran was kept in handcuffs at the hospital.

Şervan Can Güder, a 20-year-old prisoner was found suspiciously death in Van F Type Prison on March 22, 2022. It is claimed in the news coverage of March 24, 2022 that, a vehicle for his funeral was not provided. Van Governorate’s Office made a declaration and stated that Van Metropolitan Municipality has provided a vehicle for the transfer to Yüksekova district of Hakkari.

(03/233) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 24, 2022 that, Musa Külter, a prisoner in Malatya Akçadağ T Type Prison was subjected to physical violence of the correction officers as he rejected them scattering his belongings during ward searches and was put in the padded cell.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 24, 2022 that, 2 prisoners (Ramazan Turan and Selman Büyüktop) who was transferred to Çorum L Type Closed Prison from Urfa T Type Prison No 1 on March 4, 2022, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during transfer and at the entrance of the prison, were subjected to strip search and were put in solitary cells.

It is learned that the appeal made on March 23, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

(03/235) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on March 24, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(03/236) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on March 24, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(03/237) Detained Children in Diyarbakır…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 25, 2022 that, 5-year-old twin children (A. B. and E. B.) of a woman named Zeynep B., who was detained before the Newroz celebration in Bismil district of Diyarbakır on March 19, 2022, were also detained, their traditional clothes were taken off, and their fingerprints were taken at the police station.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 25, 2022 that, Zeynep B. who was detained before the Newroz celebration in Bismil district of Diyarbakır on March 19, 2022, on the grounds of her traditional clothes, was released after statement procedures but was detained once again as she was called to the police station and was released on March 20, 2022 this time.

It is learned that 56 people including 2 children are detained in house raids in Menemen, Buca, Torbalı, Bayraklı and Konak districts of Izmir on March 25, 2022, on the grounds of participating in Newroz celebration held on March 20, 2022. The names of detained people learned so far are: Hüsamettin Köseoğlu, Şeref Köseoğlu, Erkan Köseoğlu, Nurullah Köseoğlu, Davut Polat, Mervan Gümüş, Özlem Ağaçdelen, Yıldız Türk, Harun Yakaç, Dilan Karakoç, Seran Yıldız, Furkan Karataş, Altan Çalar, Hayat İzgi, Şervan Eridi, Serhat Kaya, Hogir Sevgi, Sait Pamuk, Aytekin Yavuz, Nimet Aslan, Özgür Öztürk, Sinan Al, Zeki Çakmak, Emin Elte, Müzeyyen İba. Two children (A. Ç.  and R. Ö.) are released after statement procedures.

1 of 333 people who were detained after Newroz celebration in Diyarbakır on March 21, 2022 is arrested by the court on March 24, 2022.

(03/239) Detained HDP Executive in Eskişehir…

Şükriye Ercan, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Eskişehir co-chair, who was called to the security directorate on March 24, 2022, for her official statement about the protest against price raises on February 12, 2022; is detained by anti-terror department officers on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ at Newroz celebration on March 20, 2022. Şükriye Ercan is released after statement procedures.

(03/240) Detained People Through a Bolu Based Investigation…

11 of 18 people who were detained in Ankara, Diyarbakır, Adana and Istanbul through a Bolu based investigation on March 22, 2022 are released by the court on judicial control conditions on March 24, 2022.

(03/241) Detained People in Şırnak…

On March 23, 2022, 2 people (Vasfiye Elik and Sait İlhan) are detained by gendarmerie in house raids in Fındık town of Güçlükonak district of Şırnak.

(03/242) Arrested Person for ‘Insulting the President’ in Izmir…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 24, 2022 that, Velat Yavuz, who was detained on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ and ‘threat with the intention of causing fear and panic among the public’ in a street interview, is arrested by the court.

(03/243) Investigation About People in Mersin…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 24, 2022 that, an investigation is launched on the grounds of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’, against 21 people who participated in “We cannot live on” demonstration on March 5, 2022 in Tarsus district of Mersin.

(03/244) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 4 people including Etkin News Agency editor Semiha Şahin and reporter Pınar Gayıp, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 is held on March 25, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for 4 people on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court adjourned the trial to Mary 26, 2022.

(03/245) Parliamentary Member on Trial in Van…

The final trial of the case against HDP Van MP Murat Sarısaç, for his social media posts, is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 5 on March 24, 2022. The court sentenced Murat Sarısaç to 1 year 6 months and 22 days on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

(03/246) Efe Tektekin Case…

The trial of the case against police officer İ. A., for death of Efe Tektekin (5), due to being hit by an armoured police vehicle in Bağlar district of Diyarbakır on September 11, 2019, is held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 9 on March 24, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for İ. A. on the charge of reckless killing. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded jail sentence for the police officer from 2 years up to 6 years. The court adjourned the trial to March 29, 2022.

(03/247) Vartinis Massacre Case…

The retrial of the case against former gendarmerie lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, for death of 9 members of Öğüt family including 7 children, in their house that was burned down by soldiers on May 17, 1993 in Altınova (Vartinis) town of Korkut district in Muş; is held at Kırıkkale Heavy Penal Court No 1 on March 24, 2022. The court decided to wait for the execution of the arrest warrant issued for Bülent Karaoğlu and adjourned the trial to June 2, 2022.

The final trial of the case was held on March 1, 2016; and the local court has acquitted all 4 defendants (Hasköy Gendarmerie Commander lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, Hasköy District Company Commander Lieutenant Hanifi Akyıldız, Gökyazı Gendarmerie Commander master sergeant Turhan Nurdoğan and Muş Security Directorate Special Task Department chief police Şerafettin Us). On January 26, 2021, the Penal Department No 1 of the Court of Cassation has approved the acquittal for 3 defendants but reversed the local court’s verdict regarding Bülent Karaoğlu, who was the commander of Hasköy Gendarmerie Station back then. The case will drop due to term of limitation if it will not be finalised until October 3, 2023.

(03/248) Ban of Events in Mardin and Hakkari…

Mardin Governorate’s Office made a declaration on March 17, 2022 and banned demonstrations and open door meetings in the city for 15 days as of March 18, 2022. It is stated that press declarations, distributing leaflets, hanging banners and posters, firing and carrying torches, conducting street surveys, hunger strikes, sit-in protests, collecting petitions, opening tents and stands, and protests are subject to permission of the local authority. All events in Mardin are banned for 897 days since October 17, 2019.

Hakkari Governorate made a declaration on March 20, 2022 and announced that all meetings, open-door assemblies, demonstrations, marches, sit-in protests, human chains, op-ed stands, public sessions, any kind of audio-visual activities with mobile audio-visual vehicles, hunger strikes, opening stands, collecting petitions, flying sky lanterns or balloons, commemorations, concerts, festivals, theatre plays, screening shows, firing torches, distributing leaflets, hanging banners and so on are banned for 15 days as of March 20, 2022.

(03/249) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 77 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 16,894 as of March 24, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 97,598 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 14,760,331 as of March 24, 2022.
