(06/253) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2021 that, in Şırnak T Type Prison, number of books per prisoner is limited to 5 books; 1 prisoner was subjected to physical violence of the correction officers during body search; the wards with 16-18 prisoners are given hot water for only 20 minutes twice a week; the foods given to prisoners are not hygienic; the prisoners are not given cleaning supplies and the outdoor area for women’s part is closed earlier than it should be.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2021 that, in Şırnak T Type Prison there is no specialised doctor in the infirmary, the prisoners who are referred to hospitals are forced to be examined in handcuffs and there is no dentist on duty in prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2021 that, Ekim Can Polat, an ill prisoner in Denizli T Type Prison, has been on hunger strike since June 7, 2021 to demand right to health and an end to right violations in prison.

It is learned that the appeal made on June 24, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was not responded.

(06/257) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police prevented the press declaration of the Women’s Platform for Equality of Turkey (EŞİK) members who submitted a petition to the Council of State demanding priority for the appeal for cancellation of presidential order on withdrawal from Istanbul Convention, in front of the State Council building in Ankara on June 24, 2021.

(06/258) Detained HDP Members and Executives in Istanbul…

On June 24, 2021, 10 people including members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and Free Women’s Movement (TJA) in house raids in Istanbul. It is learned that the reason of detention is their participation in the protests against the attack on HDP’s Izmir office where Deniz Poyraz was killed.

Detained people are: TJA activist Saliha Yöyler, HDP Istanbul executive İsmail Çelik, HDP Esenyurt district executives Kerem İpekli, Murat Turgut and Cahit Alkan, HDP Esenyurt district former co-chairs Nedim Karçık and Ayfer Yılmaz, Hanım Sever, Refik Karçik, Fikret Tekin.

(06/259) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against journalist Kibriye Evren is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on June 25, 2021. The indictment demands Kibriye Evren to be sentenced for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

The court decided to send a writ to Mersin Heavy Penal Court No 2 for consolidation of the case with another case on the court and adjourned the trial to November 11, 2021.

Kibriye Evren was arrested after being detained with 141 others through a Diyarbakır based investigation on October 9, 2018, and was released at the first trial on November 12, 2019.

(06/260) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Cumhuriyet newspaper reporter Hazal Ocak, photographer Vedat Arık, executive editor Olcay Büyüktaş Akça and managing editor İpek Özbey, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26 on June 24, 2021. The case was opened for the news reports about Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s demolishing of construction built in public property rented by Fahrettin Altun, Communications Director Republic of Turkey.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for journalists on the charges of ‘making a person target for terrorist organisations’ and ‘violation of privacy’. The court adjourned the trial to December 1, 2021.

(06/261) Journalist on Trial in Batman…

The trial of the case against Şerife Oruç, a reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Batman Heavy Penal Court No 2 on June 24, 2021.

The court issued a warrant for Devran Çakır, the witness who does not attend to trials, and adjourned the trial to November 11, 2021.

Şerife Oruç was arrested on July 5, 2016 and was released on judicial control conditions by the court on July 9, 2018.

(06/262) Police Officer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

Şahin Öner lost his life after being hit by an armoured police vehicle on February 10, 2013 in Diyarbakır, during protests about anniversary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s being taken to Turkey. The trial of the case against police officer S. K., driver of the armoured vehicle, on the charge of intentional killing, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 1 on June 24, 2021.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded jail sentence from 2 years to 6 years for the police officer on the charge of ‘reckless killing’. The court adjourned the trial.

(06/263) Ban of Event in Istanbul…

On June 24, 2021, Istanbul Governorate’s Office rejected the application for the Pride Parade which was to be held in Maltepe district of Istanbul on June 26, 2021, on the grounds of “protection of public peace and safety, public health and morality and prevention of terrorist incidents”.

(06/264) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2021 that 1 person is detained in a house raid in Ankara.

(06/265) Ban of Web Contents…

It is learned that websites of Jinnews News Agency, https://www.jinnews28.xyz and https://www.jinnews29.xyz are banned to access on the grounds of “protection of national security and public safety”, by Diyarbakır Penal Court of Peace No 5 on June 22, 2021.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 24, 2021 that social media accounts of Sedat Peker on 3 different platforms (Youtube, Twitter and Instagram) and some posts of these accounts are banned to access on the grounds of “protection of national security and public safety”.

(06/266) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 59 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 498 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on June 24, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 5,703.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 49,417 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 5,393,248 as of June 24, 2021.
