(01/199) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2024, that in Ankara Sincan High Security Prison No 2, prisoners’ wards were changed without any justification and some prisoners were subjected to physical and verbal violence of the correction officers. Writer Ramazan Çeper, one of the prisoners in Sincan High Security Prison No 2, made the following statement to the press: “When they change our wards, they do not even allow us to collect our belongings. They confiscate our writings. My ward was also forcibly changed today. When they changed my ward, they handcuffed my hands behind my back. I got scars on my right arm (…) They want to cut off communication between prisoners. They send each ward to a different block. When we go for phone calls and family visits, we are subjected to provocations by the correction officers. The last time I went on a visit, they beat me when I returned from the visit. They punched me in the chest”.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2024, that prisoners in Ordu E Type Prison are not given enough food.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 25, 2024, that wards in Çorum L Type Prison are cold and the beds given to prisoners who cannot sleep in bunk beds due to overcrowding are not hygienic.

It is learned that the appeal made on January 25, 2024, by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded by Bursa Public Prosecutor’s Office.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2024, that a student (D.P., F) staying in Antalya Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır Public (KYK) Dormitory was called to the room of the director of the dormitory on January 4, 2024; the director left the room and left the student alone with 2 people, during this time D.P. was subjected to threats of these 2 people and was harassed by phone calls.

(01/202) People Detained in Diyarbakır…

Out of 2 people (Sıdıka and Netice Süleymanoğlu) who were detained in house raids in Bağlar and Kayapınar districts of Diyarbakır through a Çanakkale based investigation on January 23, 2024, Netice Süleymanoğlu was released by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on judicial control condition on January 24, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2024, that 3 school principals in Halfeti district of Urfa who made social media posts about the bombardment of Turkish Air Force warplanes in Roboski (Ortasu) village of Uludere district of Şırnak in 2011, killing 34 people, were detained on December 29, 2023, and a judicial and administrative investigation was initiated against them.

The trial of the case against journalist Sibel Hürtaş for one of her articles continued on January 24, 2024, at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 19. The indictment demands Sibel Hürtaş to be sentenced for ‘insulting a public officer’. The court acquitted the journalist.

The retrial of the case against journalist Hayri Demir, who was sentenced to 2 years 9 months and 22 days in prison for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’, continued on January 24, 2024, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 15. The court adjourned the hearing to February 21, 2024.

(01/206) Police Officer on Trial in Kırşehir…

On January 24, 2024, the trial of the case against police officer S.K., who wounded his tenant Hüseyin Çetin in the leg with a gun at Kırşehir Training and Research Hospital on October 25, 2022, continued at Kırşehir Heavy Penal Court on the charge of ‘intentional injury’. The court released police officer S.K., who has been arrested for 15 months on the charge of ‘intentional injury’, on judicial control condition and adjourned the trial.

(01/207) Police Officers on Trial in Diyarbakır…

On January 24, 2024, the trial of the case against Lice Police Chief Aykut Oral and police officers İsmail Akkuş, Emre Özcan, Gökhan Bay and Hayrettin Çakmak, on the charge of ‘deprivation of liberty’ in connection with the abduction and torture of a child named Y.D. (14, m) by police officers during the Newroz celebrations in Diyarbakır in 2023, continued at Lice Criminal Court of First Instance. The court rejected the demand for the arrest of the police officers and adjourned the trial to May 15, 2024.

(01/208) The Case of Çorlu Train Crash…

The case against 13 people, on the charge of ‘negligently causing death and injury to more than one person’, for the train crash in Çorlu district of Tekirdağ on July 8, 2018, in which 25 people died and 328 people were injured, was held on Çorlu Heavy Penal Court No 1 on January 24, 2024. The court adjourned the hearing to February 29, 2024.

(01/209) The Case of an Armed Attack Against an HDP Building…

On January 24, 2024, the trial of the case against Muhammed Eren Sütçü, who committed an armed assault against Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) district office in Bahçelievler district of Istanbul on December 28, 2021, where 2 people were wounded, on the charges of ‘threatening with a gun’, ‘insult’ and ‘attempted injury with a gun’ was held at Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court No 18. The court rejected the demand for the arrest of Muhammed Eren Sütçü and adjourned the trial to June 13, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2024, that Ali Boltaç, mayor candidate of Republican People’s Party (CHP) for Mersin Tarsus district, was visiting shopkeepers as part of his election campaign, when a group of members of Grey Wolves (Ülkü Ocakları) physically and verbally attacked Ali Boltaç and CHP members distributing leaflets.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2024, that the theatre play ‘Qral û Travis’ which was planned to be performed on January 17, 2024, at Culture and Art Center of Ağrı Patnos Municipality was banned by the district governorate without giving a reason.

(01/212) People Detained and Arrested in Relation with the Coup Attempt…

The Ministry of Interior announced that 27 people were detained in operations conducted in 5 provinces on January 23, 2024.
