(01/231) Person Hit by Armoured Vehicle in Şırnak…

On January 24, 2022, a person named Abdulgaffar Dayan (23) was hit by an armoured vehicle in Cizre district of Şırnak and taken to Cizre Public Hospital as he was injured.

A witness stated the following to the press: “After the crash, tens of armoured vehicles arrived. The person who was hit by the vehicle was dragged by a Ranger car for 50 meters, the traffic was blocked. He was kept there for 40 minutes. We wanted to take him to a hospital but they did not allow us, saying that the ambulance was on way. He was then taken to the hospital in a very bad condition. The vehicle hit him so hard that the forepart of the vehicle was in pieces.”

(01/232) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2022 that, Murat Duran, a prisoner in Izmir Şakran T Type Prison No 2, was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the soldiers while he was being transferred to hospital and was injured at the face. Murat Duran’s lawyer met his client and stated the following to the press: “The suspect who was in charge there, first punched Murat and caused him falling, and as he was trying to stand up, attacked him with kicks on his face, chin, head and other parts of his body. And at that moment he ordered other soldiers to put him on the ground and handcuffed behind his back. And as he was attacking Murat, he orders other soldiers to block the cameras, and orders him being handcuffed behind his back. Murat was kept on the ground with handcuffs behind his back, and he has lost his consciousness. When he becomes conscious, he saw that the gendarmerie personnel are pushing him to the ground with their knees, leaving him immobile and in a way that he could not easily breathe. He was put in the hospital transfer vehicle while he was covered in blood. As he was taken back to the prison, he was examined at the prison hospital, after his face, nose and head was checked he was put on a drip. The prison administration probably understood how bad his situation was that he was referred to the same hospital the next day. But Murat did not accept this because the same gendarmerie personnel would be in charge of the transfer so he was referred to Yeşilyurt Public Hospital.” It is also stated in the news reports that Murat Duran was given a penalty of 1-day solitary cell confinement as a result of disciplinary proceedings.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2022 that, in Hatay T Type Prison, the heating system in wards are working only in certain times at night.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2022 that, Erol Zavar, a prisoner in Bolu F Type Prison was not given the book “Firari Yazılar” of which he is one of the writers, on the grounds that the book would ‘jeopardize the security of the institution’.

(01/233) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2022 that, 10 prisoners (Sinan Durmaz, Onur Yılmaz, Abdullah Günay, Sabah Dayan, Ozan Alpkaya, Halis Dağhan, Sertaç Kılıçarslan, Kenan Yıldızbakan and 2 more prisoners) in Izmir Kırıklar F Type Prison No 2 are on indefinite hunger strike since November 28, 2021, demanding an end to the right violations in prison.

(01/234) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 25, 2022 that, 2 people who were detained on January 17, 2022 in an alleged link to the coup attempt, and was taken under custody at the Anti-Terror Department of Provincial Security Directorate in Ankara, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment. The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu submitted a parliamentary question to the Grand National Assembly and stated that detainees were not taken for official statement for 7 days and they were forced to be interrogated without their lawyers, and those who reject were subjected to torture and ill-treatment.

(01/235) Police Intervention to a Protest in Mersin…

The police used physical violence to intervene the press declaration of the Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD), Democrat Lawyers Group and the Progressive Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD) for the Day of the Endangered Lawyer on January 24, 2022 in Mersin. It is learned that nobody was detained.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 24, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on January 24, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(01/238) Deniz Poyraz Case…

On June 17, 2021, Deniz Poyraz was killed in the armed assault to HDP’s Izmir provincial office. The trial of the case against Onur Gencer, is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 6 on January 24, 2022.

The indictment demands heavy life imprisonment and jail sentence up to 7 years for Onur Gencer on the charges of ‘intentional killing’, ‘violation of immunity of residence’ and ‘qualified damage to buildings, premises or moveable property owned or used by a political party, a professional organization having the status of a public institution or a higher federation of such’.

It is learned that Onur Gencer stated the following in his defence: “I do not regret of the bloody raid (…) If I had been there five minutes earlier, I would have launched an attack with lots of corpses”. The court accepted intervention demands of Deniz Poyraz’s family and HDP, but refused other demands including those of several bar associations on the grounds that ‘they were not directly affected by the crime’. The court decided to continue detention of Onur Gencer and adjourned the trial to April 29, 2022.

(01/239) Former HDP Co-Chair on Trial…

The final trial of the case against former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş, on the grounds of insulting Ahmet Davutoğlu, the prime minister back then, in a speech he made, is held at Mersin Penal Court of First Instance No 14 on January 24, 2022. The court sentenced Selahattin Demirtaş to 11 months and 20 days.

(01/240) Former HDP Co-Chair on Trial…

The trial of the case against former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş at Mersin Penal Court of First Instance No 14 is held on January 24, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for Demirtaş on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ in his several speeches between 2014 and 2016.

The court adjourned the trial to February 18, 2022.

(01/241) Garibe Gezer Investigation…

Gairbe Gezer, who was found suspiciously dead in Kocaeli Kandıra F Type Prison No 1 on December 9, 2021; has made a criminal complaint against prison officials and prison doctor for being sexually assaulted in prison and the prosecutor’s office has decided non-prosecution. It is learned that the appeal to the prosecutor’s decision was rejected by Kandıra Public Prosecutor’s Office on January 24, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2022 that, a proceeding demanding lift of impunity of HDP Diyarbakır MP Semra Güzel is submitted to Grand National Assembly.

(01/243) Administrative Fine for TV Channels…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2022 that the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) issued FOX TV channel with administrative fine for the expressions of prime-time newscaster Selçuk Tepe; and issued TELE 1 channel with administrative fine and five times of broadcast ban for the programme “Demokrasi Arenası” where journalist Sedef Kabaş was one of the guest and was arrested afterwards on the charge of ‘insulting the President’.

(01/244) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On January 24, 2022, 18 people are detained in operations covering 4 cities through an Istanbul based investigation.

(01/245) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 156 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 67,023 as of January 24, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 86,125 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 11,014,152 as of January 24, 2022.

On January 24, 2022, doctor Ali Çetin Ölek in Istanbul lost his life due to Covid-19.
