(02/324) Attack on Video Reporter in Antalya…

It is learned that Arik Kocabıyık, doing street interviews for Ilave TV YouTube channel, is attacked by a group alleged to be Greywolves members in Antalya on February 24, 2022.

(02/325) Attack on Journalist in Muğla…

It is learned that a group alleged to be Greywolves members attacked the house of Korkusuz newspaper’s writer Memduh Bayraktaroğlu, in Ula district of Muğla on February 24, 2022; and that as he called gendarmerie the attackers left without entering the house.

Memduh Bayraktaroğlu was threatened by Greywolves head on social media.

Memduh Bayraktaroğlu stated the following: “Tonight at 23.01, a group with sticks and covered in white cloths came to my door saying they brought flowers. I asked for the florist’s phone and I suspected as they did not give (…) I called Akyaka Gendarmerie Station and told them that a group of 5-6 people raided my house and tried to break in kicking the door. As the gendarmerie command was talking loudly, the attackers understood I was calling for help and they ran away.”

(02/326) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 24, 2022 that, Hamgin Karakaş and another political prisoner in Afyon Bolvadin T Type Prison were forcibly taken to the independent prisoners’ ward, and they were subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the correction officers for they reject to stand in military order during roll-calls and were threatened. Hamgin Karakaş’s mother stated the following after the phone conversation with his son: “My son put his hand on the table during roll-calls. The correction officers said ‘You will stand in military order’ and wanted him to take his hand off the table. My son said ‘I am not your soldier; I am a political prisoner. You cannot force me to do this. I do not accept it’. And then several correction officers came and handcuffed my son and his friend and took them out of the ward. They forced Hamgin and his friend down on the ground and said ‘You will do what we say otherwise we will cut your head off. Others act like they were our soldiers. You will act like our soldiers too’ to threaten them.”

It is learned from the news coverage of February 24, 2022 that, in Kırıkkale Keskin T Type Prison the heating systems in wards were not sufficiently operated.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 24, 2022 that, in Kayseri Bünyan T Type Prison, political prisoners were forced to sing the national anthem and those who reject it were subjected to torture and ill-treatment.

(02/327) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 24, 2022 that, prisoners who reject in-mouth search in Adan Kürkçüler F Type Prison were not referred to hospitals.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 25, 2022 that, 74 prisoners who tested positive for Covid-19 in Izmir Kırıklar F Type Prison No 1 were not given medication.

It is learned that the appeal made on February 24, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

It is learned that the appeal made on February 25, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

(02/329) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the group Karala, holding a press declaration in front of the Russian Embassy in Ankara to protest Russia’s attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022 and detained 6 people. Detained people are released after statement procedures on the same day.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on February 24, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(02/331) Police Intervention in Ankara…

The police prevented the family of Gülistan Doku from entering the Ministry of Justice building to meet the Minister on February 24, 2022. It is reported that the police used violence to prevent them from leaving their hotel too, and intervened the journalists to move them away the hotel. Gülistan Doku has gone missing in Tunceli on January 5, 2022 and no news was received from her since then.

The police used violence to intervene the family as they leave the hotel, it is learned that Aygül Doku, Gülistan Doku’s sister, fainted due to police intervention.

(02/332) Detained SYKP Executive in Istanbul…

Roni Gören, provincial co-chair of the Socialist Refoundation Party (SYKP) is detained in Istanbul on February 25, 2022. The reason of detention is unknown.

(02/333) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against journalist Kibriye Evren is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on February 24, 2022. The indictment demands Kibriye Evren to be sentenced for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

The court decided to consolidate the case with the one at Mersin Heavy Penal Court No 2.

Kibriye Evren was arrested after being detained with 141 others through a Diyarbakır based investigation on October 9, 2018, and was released at the first trial on November 12, 2019.

(02/334) Journalists on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against USA-based Vice News reporter Jacop Philip John Gıngell Hanrahan and cameraman Philip John Pendlebury, along with translator Mohamed İsmael Rasool and driver Abdurrahman Direkçi, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on February 24, 2022.

The court decided to wait for the official statements given by rogatory of letters in the UK, and adjourned the trial to May 26, 2022.

Vice News reporter Jacop Philip John Gıngell Hanrahan and cameraman Philip John Pendlebury, translator Mohamed İsmael Rasool and driver Abdurrahman Direkçi who came to Diyarbakır for a documentary on the curfews in Cizre, Silopi, Nusaybin and Sur districts, have been detained by the police raiding their hotel rooms on August 28, 2015. Journalists and the translator were arrested on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’, and the driver was released. English journalists were deported after being released from prison on September 3, 2015. Iraqi translator was released from prison on January 4, 2016.

(02/335) ESP Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Beycan Taşkıran, deputy co-chair of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on February 24, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Beycan Taşkıran on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The court adjourned the trial to June 9, 2022.

(02/336) Lawyers on Trial in Urfa…

The trial of the case against lawyers Hidayet Enmek, Eyüp Sabri Tinaş and Mehmet Emin Uyguner, on the grounds of ‘insulting a public officer’ and ‘resisting to prevent public duty’ is held at Urfa Heavy Penal Court No 4 on February 24, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to March 28, 2022. 3 lawyers have been detained by the police using physical violence during Newroz celebrations in Urfa in 2012.

(02/337) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 13 people including 2 journalists, for the protest about hunger strikes in prisons held in front of Bakırköy Women’s Prison on May 10, 2019, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 on February 24, 2022.

It is learned that the journalists were taken out of the courtroom on the grounds of Covid-19 pandemic. After defence hearings the court lifted the ban on leaving the country for the defendants, and exempted the defendants for the next trials and adjourned the trial to June 28, 2022.

(02/338) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On February 24, 2022, 13 people are detained in operations covering 9 cities through an Edirne based investigation.

On February 25, 2022, 31 people are detained in operations covering 9 cities through an Istanbul based investigation.

(02/339) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 281 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 79,708 as of February 24, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 93,539 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 13,841,889 as of February 24, 2022.
