(08/082) Police Intervention at a Protest in Ankara…

Relatives of soldiers who lost their lives, as well as injured soldiers and their relatives, who were holding a vigil and sit-in at Güven Park in the Çankaya district of Ankara ’s Çankaya district, where relatives of soldiers who lost their lives in clashes, as well as injured soldiers and their relatives, were holding a vigil and sit-in. It was reported that the police intervened in the march they intended to hold to the Ministry of National Defense on August 24, 2026, and that during the intervention, Selçuk Türkoğlu, a Bursa MP from the İYİ Party, was taken to the hospital after his condition worsened. It was also reported that some individuals who had come to offer support were taken into custody during the intervention. However, the total number of people taken into custody could not be determined.

(08/083) The Trial in Istanbul Involving Mayors and Other Individuals…

The final hearing in the case filed against 200 individuals, 5 of whom are in custody, including Adana Metropolitan Mayor Zeydan Karalar, Adıyaman Mayor Abdurrahman Tutdere, Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat, Seyhan Mayor Oya Tekin, Ceyhan Mayor Kadir Aydar, Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer, and Avcılar Mayor Utku Caner Çaykara at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 1 was held on August 24, 2026.

The court:

  • sentenced Adana Metropolitan Mayor Zeydan Karalar to 6 years and 3 months in prison on charges of “bribery” and barred him from public office for 3 years, 1 month, and 15 days;
  • acquitted Adıyaman Mayor Abdurrahman Tutdere of the charge of “bribery.”
  • sentenced Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat to a total of 23 years, 3 months, and 15 days in prison and a total of 4 million TL in criminal fines for the crimes of “bid-rigging,” “bribery,” and “laundering assets derived from crime,” and ordered that he remain in custody;
  • sentenced Avcılar Mayor Utku Caner Çaykara to 6 years and 8 months in prison on the charge of “bribery” and barred him from holding public office for 3 years and 4 months;
  • sentenced Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer to 8 months and 10 days in prison on the charge of “abuse of office through negligence” and suspended the pronouncement of the sentence;
  • sentenced Seyhan Mayor Oya Tekin to 8 years and 4 months in prison on a charge of “bribery,” barred her from public office for 4 years and 2 months, and ordered that she remain in custody;
  • sentenced Ceyhan Mayor Kadir Aydar to 5 years and 10 months in prison for the crime of “bribery” and barred him from public office for 4 years and 2 months.

(08/084) Journalist Under Investigation…

Based on news reports published on August 24, 2026, it was learned that the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against Dilek Gappi, President of the İzmir Journalists’ Association (İGC), on the grounds of charges of “slander” and “publicly disseminating misleading information,” citing a press release issued by the İGC on August 21, 2026, as evidence. The journalist gave a statement as part of the investigation.

(08/085) Cultural Center Raided by Police in Ankara…

According to news reports published on August 24, 2026, it was learned that the İdilcan Cultural Center, located in the Mamak district of Ankara, was raided by police during an event held in the building regarding sick prisoners, and that at least 15 people were detained. The names of those detained could not be determined.
