(04/265) Kurdish Student Attacked in Bursa…

It is learned from news coverage of April 24, 2018 that M.C., a student of Uludağ University was attacked by a group of racists (15 people) in front of his house in Bursa and his chin was broken. It is reported in the news that in 2018, 8 racist attacks happened against Kurdish students in Bursa.

(04/266) Alleged Suicide Under Custody in Istanbul…

It was claimed in news coverage of April 24, 2018 that a trans woman named Ceyda attempted to suicide with a pesticide at Zeytinburnu Merkezefendi Police station where she was taken after being detained. Kıvılcım Arat, Istanbul LGBTİ Solidarity Association board member, made a declaration and said following: “Police officers have waited until foam comes out of her mouth and then take her to the hospital. Security forces take even shoe laces before detention, how come they do not see the pesticide?”.

It is learned from news coverage of April 24, 2018 that Orçun Senyücel, who was dismissed by the state of emergency decree was forced to get on a black transporter vehicle and kidnapped in Ankara Türkkonut towards morning of April 21, 2018.

(04/268) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

On April 24, 2018, 1 soldier died by an improvised explosive blast during the operation in rural areas of Şırnak.

It is learned from news coverage of April 24, 2018 that 2 militants died in clashes between security forces and TKP/ML TİKKO militants. Tunceli Governorate announced that 1 injured militant was captured, however where the injured militant was taken is unknown.

(04/269) Police Intervention Against 1915 Armenian Genocide Commemoration in Istanbul…

On April 24, 2018, the police intervened the press declaration organized by Human Rights Association (İHD) Istanbul branch for the 103rd anniversary of 1915 Armenian Genocide at Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul. The press declaration was prevented by the police on the grounds that the declaration includes “genocide” and “massacre” expressions. The police made ID checks to the people gathering and detained 3 İHD members including Istanbul executive board member Leman Yurtsever. Leman Yurtsever, Jiyan Tosun and Gamze Yaman who were detained were released the same day.

(04/270) Rejection of Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan…

It is learned that the appeal made on April 24, 2018 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was rejected the same day on the grounds of limitations for prisoners in accordance with the law on the execution of sentences and security measures (law no 5275). With the last rejection, it was the 749th time that appeals for visiting Öcalan have been rejected so far. Abdullah Öcalan has met his lawyers on July 27, 2011 for the last time.

(04/271) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 24, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on April 24, 2018, 2 people (Nazan Bozkurt, and Mehmet Dersulu) and at 18.00 6 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Gülnaz Bozkurt, Ecem Polat, Mehmet Dersulu, Deniz Yılmaz ve U. A. (16, male)) were detained.

Thus in total 8 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on April 24, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(04/272) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

The final trial of the case against academician Assoc. Professor Meryem Didem Dayı Tirek for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 36 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is held on April 24, 2018. The court sentenced Meryem Didem Dayı Tirek to 1 year and 3 months and postponed the sentence.

The case against 7 academicians (Professor Yüksel Taşkın, Cihan Yapıştan, PhD İsmet Akça, PhD Ayşe Nilüfer Durakbaşa, Seçil Ercan, Assist. Professor Özgür Müftüoğlu, Assoc. Professor Tuba İnal Çekiç) for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 33 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is held on April 24, 2018. On Özgür Müftüoğlu’s trial the court board allowed only 3 lawyers at lawyers’ bench and let other lawyers sit among audience. The court adjourned 6 of the trials to June 22, 2018 and 1 trial to June 21, 2018.

(04/273) Hayat TV Channel Case…

The case against Gökhan Çetin, managing director, Mustafa Kara and İsmail Gökhan Bayram, shareholders of Hayatın Sesi TV channel which was closed down by state of emergency decree, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 for ‘successively making propaganda of an illegal organisation’ in news reports, continued to be held on April 24, 2018. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to September 19, 2018.

(04/274) Former HDP PM’s on Trial…

The case against former HDP Hakkari PM Selma Irmak on Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 13 for her expressions in a television programme for ‘insulting the President’ is held on April 24, 2018. Selma Irmak was relieved of PM duties after the court verdict given to her was finalized. Selma Irmak did not attend the trial. The court decided to bring Selma Irmak forcefully to the sound and vision room for the next trial in case she does not accept to defence herself via sound and vision system, and adjourned the trial to June 2018.

(04/275) HDP Executives and Members on Trial in Manisa…

The case against 43 people (17 arrestees) including HDP executives and members on Manisa Heavy Penal Court No 3, continued to be held on April 24, 2018. After defence hearings the court released 9 people on juridical control conditions and adjourned the trial to July 19, 2018.

The case was opened against 138 people including HDP executives and members and on December 20, 2018 the court decided to separate the case into 3 cases and adjourned the trials to April 4, 11, and 24, 2018.

(04/276) Socialist Party of the Oppressed Executive on Trial Istanbul…

The case against Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Istanbul co-chair Pınar Türk on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 24 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ started to be held on April 24, 2018. After defence hearings the court released Pınar Türk on juridical control conditions and adjourned the trial.

(04/277) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

4 of 6 former police officers dismissed by state of emergency decree, who were detained in Aydın on April 14, 2018 are arrested by the court on April 24, 2018. Former police chief of Aydın, Ahmet Turan Temel is among arrestees. 2 people are released on juridical control conditions.

(04/278) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

It is learned from news coverage of April 20, 2018 that 137 of 285 cases opened through “Fethullahist Terrorist Organisation/ Parallel State Organisation” investigation are finalized, and in these cases 1393 defendants were sentenced to heavy life penalty (392), life penalty (497) as of April 20, 2018.
