It is learned from the news coverage of May 25, 2024, that 1 person named Mehmet Yıldırım (45, m) died in a military operation in the Ortaç (Nenyas) rural neighborhood of Diyarbakır’s Lice district. The Ministry of Interior announced on its social media account on May 25, 2024 that Mehmet Yıldırım was a PKK militant.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 25, 2024, that Mustafa Ali Ayda, a prisoner in Istanbul Maltepe Prison, lost his life. It is stated in the news reports that prison authorities reported the cause of death as suicide.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 26, 2024, that Ercan Çakar, a prisoner in Iğdır S Type Prison, lost his life. His family claimed that Ercan Çakar had traces of physical violence on his body. It is also reported in the news that Ercan Çakar shared with his family that he was subjected to torture and ill-treatment in prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 25, 2024, that prison administration initiated 2 separate disciplinary proceedings against Senem Eriş, Young Women Coordination member of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), who is kept in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison, on the grounds of rejecting strip search and being put in judicial ward.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 25, 2024, that the police intervened in the protest of Döne Kaya, Sema Olukpınar, and Zeliha Ağırbaş, who lost their relatives in the Antep and Maraş earthquakes on February 6, 2023, in front of the Human Rights Monument on Konur Street in Çankaya district of Ankara, demanding ‘fair trial’; and seized the banners of 3 people and the photograph of Zeliha Ağırbaş’s son who lost his life in the earthquake. It is reported that 3 people left the area after taking the photograph back from the police.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 26, 2024, that the police intervened against the group of teachers who wanted to march to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) after holding a press statement in front of the Ministry of National Education with the call of Private Sector Teachers’ Union, and that a police officer pointed a gun at the teachers.

On May 24, 2024, 5 people were detained in house raids in the Lice district of Diyarbakır on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and ‘aiding an illegal organization’. The names of the detainees could not be learned.

On May 26, 2024, 11 people including children were detained in house raids in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari. It is learned that there is a confidentiality order on the file and a 24-hour restriction on lawyer visits. The names of detainees and the reason for their detention could not be learned.

The retrial of the case against journalist Nurcan Yalçın started on May 27, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9, following the reversal of the 3 years 7 months and 27 days imprisonment sentence by Penal Department No 2 of Diyarbakır Regional Court of Appeals. The court adjourned the hearing to November 26, 2024.

The trial of the case against 24 people, including the Jinnews reporter Öznur Değer, who were detained in the police intervention against the “We cannot make ends meet” protest in Ankara on November 28, 2021, was held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 18 on May 27, 2024. The court adjourned the hearing to June 26, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 25, 2024, that the indictment of Urfa Public Prosecutor’s Office against Ali Arslan, Lawyers’ Association for Freedom (ÖHD) Central Disciplinary Board Member and Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Urfa Provincial Organization Executive, on the grounds of a social media post he shared on April 15, 2024, was accepted by Urfa Penal Court of First Instance No 1. The indictment demands a sentence for Ali Arslan on the charge of ‘insulting the President’.

The final trial of the case against 17 people who were detained and subjected to torture and ill-treatment during the police intervention against the people who organized a commemoration for those who lost their lives in the Suruç Massacre in Adana on July 18, 2021, on the charges of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’ and ‘resisting to prevent duty’ was held at Adana Penal Court of First Instance No 17 on May 24, 2024. The court acquitted 17 people.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 26, 2024, that 26 news reports and 75 social media posts about the District Governor of Nusaybin province threatening journalist Ahmet Kanbal, were banned from access by the Nusaybin Penal Court of Peace on the grounds of violation of personal rights.

(05/270) Special Security Zone in Şırnak…

The Governorate of Şırnak announced on May 24, 2024, that Gabar Mountain region in central and Güçlükonak districts, Cudi Mountain region in central, Silopi and Cizre districts, Altındağları region in Beytüşşebap district, Oymakaya region in Beytüşşebap and Uludere districts have been declared as temporary special security zones for 15 days between May 25, 2024, and June 8, 2024.

(05/271) People Detained and Arrested in Relation with the Coup Attempt…

14 of 46 people who were detained in Ankara on May 21, 2024, were arrested by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on May 24, 2024.

According to the news coverage of May 25, 2024, 10 people on a boat stopped in international waters off Urla district of Izmir were detained for allegedly illegally crossing the border.
