It is claimed in the news coverage of 23 September 2024 that theatre actress Gaye Filiz Alacacı was detained in a room for 3 hours by Görkem Ali Kaya, alleged to be Tamer Karadağlı’s advisor, and Ali Ceyhan, his chief of staff, for criticizing Tamer Karadağlı, General Director of State Theatres, on social media, and was subjected to threats and blackmail. It is reported in the news that Gaye Filiz Alacacı filed a criminal complaint against Tamer Karadağlı, Ali Kaya, and Ali Ceyhan at Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.

It is learned that on September 22, 2024, Rukiye Kibar, wife of Reşit Kibar, who lost his life when Muhammet Ustabaş opened fire at life/environment defenders protesting against the cutting down of trees in the Cankurtaran area of the Borçka district of Artvin on September 3, 2024; and Ali Şükrü Kibar, brother of Reşit Kibar, were threatened by Recep Bamya and Süleyman Bamya, operators of the construction equipment coming to cut down the trees on September 3, 2024, saying ‘We will not let you live here. We will burn down this village’ on 22 September 2024.

It is learned that the appeal made on September 24, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

On 23 September 2024, the gendarmerie intervened the 29 days sit-in protest in front of the mine by the workers, and members and executives of the Independent Mine Workers‘ Union (Bağımsız Maden-İş) who started a resistance demanding the right to union organization after the dismissal of 7 workers of Fernas Mine, owned by Justice and Development Party (AKP) Batman MP Ferhat Nasırlıoğlu, on the grounds that they were union members, and detained Independent Mine Workers’ Union President Gökay Çakır and Organization Specialist Başaran Aksu. The 2 detained trade unionists were released by the court on 24 September 2024 with judicial control measures such as not coming within 500 meters of the mine area and signing in on certain days of the week.

On 24 September 2024, at least 27 people including MED-DER Co-Chairs Mehmet Remzi Azizoğlu and Şükran Yakut were detained in house raids in Diyarbakır, Izmir, and Istanbul through an investigation by the Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office. It is also reported in the news that there is a confidentiality order on the investigation file and detainees are restricted from seeing their lawyers for 24 hours. On September 24, 2024, police conducted house raids in the Kızıltepe district of Mardin and detained people including former executives of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Necla Kaya, Abdulgani Feritoğulları and Yasemin Demirkaya. The total number of detainees and the reason for the detention could not be learned.

It is learned that 2 villagers, Ömürcan Topal and Yasin Topal, who reacted to the threats of Recep Bamya and Süleyman Bamya were detained by the gendarmerie. Detained people were released after statement procedures on the same day.

On 24 September 2024, at least 6 people including members of Peoples‘ Democratic Congress (HDK), Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), Democratic Regions Party (DBP) and Marmara Association for Assistance and Solidarity with Families of Prisoners and Detainees (MATUHAY-DER) were detained in house raids in Istanbul. It is also reported in the news that there is a restriction order on the file. The reason for the detention could not be learned. The detainees whose names could be learned are DEM Party 1st Region Co-spokesperson Dilber Demir, DEM Party executive Yusuf Meniye, DEM Party Arnavutköy District Organisation executive Hayrettin Erikli, DBP executive Mustafa Kızılaya, HDK worker Şamil Altan, MATUHAY-DER executive Kalo Bozutmak.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 23, 2024 that, Bodrum Heavy Penal Court No 1 accepted the indictment against environment/life defender lawyer Remzi Kazmaz, on the grounds of preventing the meeting organized by the Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization Climate Change in the Güvercinlik neighborhood in the Bodrum district of Muğla on July 21, 2020, and insulting the officers in charge. The first hearing of the case will be held on 25 September 2024.

The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’. The court adjourned the hearing to 24 February 2025.

It is learned from the news coverage of 23 September 2024 that, Erciş Penal Court of First Instance No 4 accepted the indictment of Van Erciş Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalist İdris Yılmaz for a social media post on the use of torture and ill-treatment by police officers during the protests against the refusal to hand over the official municipal mandate of Abdullah Zeydan, who was elected as co-mayor of Van Metropolitan Municipality from Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) in 31 March 2024 elections. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charges of ‘provoking people to disobey the law’ and ‘provoking people to hatred and hostility’. The first hearing of the case will be held on 14 November 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 23, 2024, that Eskişehir Penal Court of First Instance No 16 accepted the indictment of Eskişehir Public Prosecutor’s Office against 10 people who were detained by torture and ill-treatment during the police intervention in Eskişehir Pride March held for the 4th time this year on June 9, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for 10 people on the charges of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’ and ‘resisting to prevent duty’. The first hearing of the case will be held on 18 February 2025.

The retrial of the case against journalists Ahmet Memiş, Ali Akkuş, Cemal Azmi Kalyoncu, Gökçe Fırat Çulhaoğlu, Ünal Tanık, Yakup Çetin and Yetkin Yıldız continued on 24 September 2024. The court adjourned the trial to 17 December 2024 to allow Gökçe Fırat Çulhaoğlu to make a defence due to health problems.

The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘aiding an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to 21 November 2024.

It is learned that on September 24, 2024, through an investigation of the Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office, Mezopotamya Language and Culture Research Association (MED-DER) which provides Kurdish language education, Anka Language and Art Education Cooperative which provides multilingual education and art workshops, and Payîz Pirtûk bookstore were raided by the police and many books, magazines and computer hard drives were seized during searches.

It is learned from the news coverage of 24 September 2024 that, through an investigation by the Izmir Public Prosecutor’s Office, 15 people including 7 military members on active duty, 1 retired military member, 1 civil servant and 6 military school students who were discharged after July 15 coup attempt, were detained through operations covering 12 cities.
