(11/234) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of November 23, 2021 that, 2 HPG militants died in an air operation of Turkish Armed Forces to Metina area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on October 24, 2021.

(11/235) Journalists Subjected to Physical Violence of the Police in Diyarbakır…

The police and gendarmerie prevented the commemoration visit to the cemetery in Sise village of Lice district in Diyarbakır on November 23, 2021, which was organized as a part of 25 November International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It is also learned that the police used physical violence to intervene journalists Derya Ren and Eylem Akdağ, and seized their recording equipment. It is reported that the police returned the seized equipment.

(11/236) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of November 23, 2021 that, social and cultural rights of the prisoners in Malatya Akçadağ T Type Prison were restricted; and they are threatened by correction officers saying “This is a military prison, we are the state, do not look for it anywhere else, you will bend the knee. You will obey the discipline”. It is also learned that Selahattin Korkmaz, a prisoner was subjected to torture and ill-treatment as he rejected strip search at the entrance of the prison; İslam İverendi, an ill prisoner was subjected to torture and ill-treatment for he rejected strip search as he came back from hospital.

It is learned from the news coverage of November 23, 2021 that, 60 political prisoners in Istanbul Silivri L Type Prison No 5 are imposed a penalty of reprimand as a result of disciplinary proceedings, for they refused to have visits and phone calls to protest being forced to carry on an identity card reading “terror” every time they leave their wards.

It is learned from the news coverage of November 23, 2021 that, the open-door areas in Istanbul Silivri L Type Prisons No 3 and 7 are covered by net, and the number of books per prisoner is limited to 7.

(11/237) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned that Mehmet Işıktaş, who was on hunger strike since November 7, 2021, for he was put in non-political prisoners’ ward in Konya Ereğli T Type Prison where he has been transferred under coercion from Diyarbakır D Type Prison, ended the strike on November 23, 2021 as his demands were met.

(11/238) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on November 23, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit him was not responded.

(11/239) Extension of Conditional Release of Prisoners Due to Covid-19 Pandemic…

On November 23, 2021, the Grand National Assembly approved the resolution to prolong the conditional release of almost 90,000 prisoners due to Covid-19 until May 31, 2022.

(11/240) Police Interventions to Protests in Kocaeli, Istanbul, Eskişehir, Ankara and Izmir…

The police intervened the demonstration in Derince district of Kocaeli on November 23, 2021, to protest the economic crisis and financial policies of the government; and detained 6 people including Evrensel newspaper’s Kocaeli correspondent Gözde Meydan and the Labour Party (EMEP) Derince district co-chair Adem Korkmaz. Detained people are released after statement procedures on the same day.

The police intervened the protest in Sancaktepe district of Istanbul on November 23, 2021 and detained 3 people by using physical violence.

The police intervened the protest in Şişli district of Istanbul on November 23, 2021. It is learned that nobody was detained.

The police intervened the protest in Eskişehir on November 23, 2021 and detained 6 people.

The police used pepper spray to intervene the protest in METU campus in Ankara on November 23, 2021. It is learned that nobody was detained.

The police intervened the protest in Buca district of Izmir on November 23, 2021. It is learned that nobody was detained.

(11/241) Gendarmerie Intervention to a Protest in Urfa…

The gendarmerie intervened the march of Uğur Textile workers who were dismissed for being unionized, in the Organized Industrial Zone No 2 in Urfa on November 22, 2021, and detained 2 people. Detained people are released on the same day.

(11/242) Detained People in Şırnak…

5 of 35 people who were detained in Şırnak on November 17, 2021, are arrested by the court on the charge of ‘financially supporting an illegal organisation’ on November 23, 2021; and 2 people are released on judicial control conditions.

The number of arrests is 8 while 4 people are released on judicial control conditions through this investigation. It is learned that 23 people are still under custody.

(11/243) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 22 people, on the charge of ‘resisting the police’, during the police raid to Gündem newspaper on August 16, 2016, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 5 on November 23, 2021. The court adjourned the trial to December 21, 2021.

(11/244) “KCK Press Case”…

The trial of the case against 46 journalists, known as “KCK Press Case” is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 3 on November 23, 2021. The court adjourned the trial to February 22, 2022.

(11/245) Journalists on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against USA-based Vice News reporter Jacop Philip John Gıngell Hanrahan and cameraman Philip John Pendlebury, along with translator Mohamed İsmael Rasool and driver Abdurrahman Direkçi, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on November 22, 2021.

The court decided to wait for the 2016 dated writ to take official statements of the defendants in the UK by rogatory of letters, and adjourned the trial to February 24, 2022.

Vice News reporter Jacop Philip John Gıngell Hanrahan and cameraman Philip John Pendlebury, translator Mohamed İsmael Rasool and driver Abdurrahman Direkçi who came to Diyarbakır for a documentary on the curfews in Cizre, Silopi, Nusaybin and Sur districts, have been detained by the police raiding their hotel rooms on August 28, 2015. Journalists and the translator were arrested on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’, and the driver was released. English journalists were deported after being released from prison on September 3, 2015. Iraqi translator was released from prison on January 4, 2016.

(11/246) HDP Executive on Trial in Hatay…

The first trial of the case against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Iskenderun district co-chair Abdurrahim Şahin, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in a speech he made in 2014, is held at Hatay Heavy Penal Court No 2 on November 23, 2021. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to December 14, 2021.

(11/247) Person on Trial in Izmir for ‘Insulting the President’…

The trial of the case against video-activist and documentarist Oktay İnce, for social media posts of an anonymous account, is held at Izmir Kemalpaşa Penal Court of First Instance No 1 on November 23, 2021. Oktay Ince’s archive was seized by the police raiding his house in 2018. The court adjourned the trial to November 30, 2021.

(11/248) People on Trial for Social Media Posts in Van…

The first trial of the case against 7 people including Tuşba district co-mayor Ayşe Minaz who was replaced by a trustee, and Muradiye district co-mayor Leyla Balkan and several HDP executives, for social media posts about a march for the Istanbul Convention, is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 5 on November 23, 2021. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 17, 2022.

(11/249) Police Officer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

Şahin Öner has lost his life after being hit by an armoured police vehicle on February 10, 2013 in Diyarbakır, during protests about anniversary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s being taken to Turkey. The final trial of the case against police officer S. K., driver of the armoured vehicle, on the charge of intentional killing, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 1 on November 23, 2021.

The court sentenced the defendant police officer to 4 year 5 months and 10 days on the charge of ‘causing death by deliberate negligence’. The court refused to arrest defendant police officer.

It is learned from the news coverage of November 23, 2021 that, 19 proceedings demanding lift of impunity of 13 parliamentary members are submitted to the Grand National Assembly.

Parliamentary members subjected to proceedings are:

It is learned that Etkin News Agency’s website https://www.etha26.com is banned to access on the grounds of “protection of national security and public order” by Diyarbakır Penal Court of Peace No 4 on November 23, 2021.

It is learned that a content on the Freedom of Expression Association’s website https://ifade.org.tr is banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No 5 on November 23, 2021.

It is learned that 120 news reports and contents about the company that demanded confiscation of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s accounts and its owner, is banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No 5 on November 23, 2021.

(11/252) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On November 23, 2021, 53 people are detained in operations covering 42 cities through an Ankara based investigation; and 79 people are detained in operations covering 21 cities through an Izmir based investigation.

(11/253) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 208 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 28,170 as of November 23, 2021.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 75,443 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 8,624,580 as of November 23, 2021.
