(06/241) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned that 1 HPG militant died in an air operation of Turkish Armed Forces to Qandil area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on June 23, 2021.

(06/242) Asylum Seeker Lost His Life in Repatriation Center in Izmir…

It is learned that a 21-year-old asylum seeker named Ahmed Maslem lost his life in the fire that started at Izmir Harmandalı Repatriation Center on June 23, 2021; while 2 security staff were admitted to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Izmir Governorate’s Office made a declaration and claimed that the incident could be a suicide. It is reported that the prosecutor’s inquiry is still in process.

(06/243) Person Subjected to Physical Violence of Security Guards in Istanbul…

On June 23, 2021, Hamdi Arslanoğlu, a person lives in a building block in Bağcılar district of Istanbul, was subjected to physical violence of private security guards with whom he had a quarrel with. It is learned that Hamdi Arslanoğlu filed a criminal complaint against the security guards.

Hamdi Arslanoğlu stated the following: “I have ordered food and the delivery person called me when he arrived. He said ‘They are not letting me in, they ask for my ID card and I am not giving it to them’. And I said ‘That’s good because they are not police officers, they cannot ask for your ID’. Then I went downstairs, and received my delivery. After that, I called the security chief, introduced myself and said ‘You are not police officers, you cannot ask for ID cards, you could only ask information’. He was provocative and said ‘You are a doctor and this is how you talk?’. Then they started to ask me where I was. They were 3 people at that time, I did not know this. He kept me calling to say ‘We are almost there, where are you?’. 2 people came first, and then another person arrived. He choked me and pushed me onto the window. (…) Then the other guard hit me five or six times. (…) There are marks of violence all over my body.”

It is learned that the appeal made on June 23, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was not responded.

(06/245) Police Intervention to a Protest in Izmir…

The police used pepper spray and rubber bullets to intervene the sit-in protest of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) members in Izmir on June 23, 2021, which was held to protest the attack on Izmir office of HDP where Deniz Poyraz was killed. It is learned that nobody was detained.

(06/246) Detained DTK Member in Diyarbakır…

Nuri Özdemir, executive board member of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) is detained in a house raid in Diyarbakır on June 23, 2021.

(06/247) Detained People in Şırnak…

On June 23, 2021, 3 people (Rahmi Aykut, Osman Bal and İhsan Ediş) are detained in house raids in Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak on June 23, 2021. The reason of detention is unknown.

(06/248) TJA Spokesperson on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Ayşe Gökkan, the spokesperson of Tevgera Jinên Azad – Free Women’s Movement (TJA) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on June 23, 2021.

The court allowed only 2 people in the court room as audience. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded jail sentence for Ayşe Gökkan up to 35 years, including 30 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on two counts and 5 years for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court decided to continue detention of Ayşe Gökkan and adjourned the trial to September 13, 2021.

Ayşe Gökkan was detained on January 27, 2021, following the ruling of the court and was arrested on January 28, 2021.

(06/249) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalist and writer Mustafa Sönmez, on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ in social media posts, is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 26 on June 23, 2021. The court acquitted Mustafa Sönmez.

(06/250) Police Officers on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against 3 police officers (K. A., N. D. and Y. Ş.) on the grounds of committing violence to journalist Beyza Kural while she was reporting on an incident, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No 3 on June 23, 2021.

The defendant police officers made their defence declarations. The court adjourned the trial to September 24, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for the defendant police officers on the charge of ‘violation of freedom of work and labour’. The Constitutional Court decided on Beyza Kural’s individual appeal on February 18, 2021 and ruled that ban of treatment against human dignity, and freedom of expression and freedom of press were violated. The court has also ruled that an investigation should be carried on in order to end the results and 15,000 Turkish Liras should be paid to Beyza Kural as immaterial compensation.

(06/251) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On June 23, 2021, 1 person is detained in a house raid in Ankara.

(06/252) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 65 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 550 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on June 23, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 5,809.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 49,358 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 5,387,545 as of June 23, 2021.
