(01/191) Private Security Officers Intervene against University Students in Adana…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2024, that students who wanted to make an announcement at Adana Çukurova University about Zeren Ertaş, who lost her life due to the fall of an elevator at Güzelhisar Dormitory for Girls in Aydın on October 25, 2023, were subjected to physical and verbal violence of private security guards. It is reported that 4 students were subjected to an investigation and 3 students were given reprimand and 1 student was suspended.

Sidar Üngör, the student who was suspended, made the following statements to the press: “At the beginning of the semester, we gathered at Çukurova University’s central cafeteria to make an announcement to commemorate Zeren Ertaş, whom we lost as a result of negligence, and our classmates who were driven to suicide due to anxiety about their future. The school’s private security unit carried out a harsh intervention here. Since I was recording the intervention on camera, they tried to seize my phone and intervened against me as well. We were beaten, verbally and physically harassed and threatened. (…) Afterwards, we were investigated by the Student Affairs Department. When we went to submit our defense, we saw that the disciplinary commission was biased. Our words were brushed off and not taken seriously. At the end of the process, while other friends were given penalties that were changed from suspension to reprimand on the grounds that they had no previous disciplinary penalties, I was given a one-month suspension without any justification, even though I had no previous disciplinary penalties reported to me.”
