It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2023 that, 2 militants died in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Qandil area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on August 26, 2022 and 3 militants died in clashes in July.

6 people who were detained by the police intervening in the commemoration event held by Partizan Martyr and Prisoners’ Families and Partizan readers at Sarıgazi Cemetery in Istanbul on January 22, 2023 are released by the court on judicial control conditions on January 23, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 23, 2023 that, Dicle News Agency reporter Murat Verim, who was deported by Greece, is arrested and put in Edirne F Type Prison on the grounds of a 4 years of finalised sentence given to him on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’.

2 musicians Gencay Malkoç and Yusuf Keleş, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in the Kurdish songs they sang at the Sere Salê (the Hijri New Year) event of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) held in Darıca district of Kocaeli on January 22, 2023. Two people are released after statement procedures on January 23, 2023.

It is learned that 1 person named Hazine Oruç is detained in a house raid in İdil district of Şırnak on January 24, 2023. The reason for detention is unknown.
(01/184) The Case Against Human Rights Defender…
The first trial of the case against Özlem Yılmaz, chair of the Human Rights Agenda Association (İHGD), on the grounds of ‘disclosure and publishing the identities of and thus targeting the public officials who took part in the fight against terrorism’ and ‘insulting a public official due to their duty’ by a social media post, is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No. 21 on January 24, 2023. The court acquitted Özlem Yılmaz.
(01/185) Birol Yıldırım Case…
The trial of the case against 12 police officers including 1 arrestee, for death of Birol Yıldırım at Esenyurt district police station in Istanbul on June 5, 2021, is held at Istanbul Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court No. 13 on June 23, 2023. The court decided to forcibly bring the witnesses and adjourned the trial.
The indictment demands sentence for 6 of the defendant police officers on the charges of ‘causing death by conscious negligence’ and ‘intentional injury’; and for 6 police officers on the charges of ‘intentional injury by abuse of power’. The only arrested defendant in the case, İ. S. was released on April 25, 2022.

The strike of the United Metal Workers’ Union (Birleşik Metal-İş) at Schneider Energy Industry in Çayırova district of Kocaeli was postponed for 60 days by a presidential order on the grounds that it “distorts national security” on January 23, 2023.

It is learned that 17 people are detained in operations covering 3 cities through an Istanbul based investigation on January 24, 2023.
