(08/214) Suspicious Death Under Custody in Manisa…
IT is learned that a person named Orhan Azman (25), who detained on the charge of “resistance” to the police teams after he was stopped by the watchmen in Selendi district of Manisa on August 23, 2022; died suspiciously at the District Gendarmerie Command, where he was taken, and it was reported to his family that he committed suicide by hanging himself with his undershirt. Orhan Azman’s father, Doğan Azman, stated the following to the press: “The watchmen stop my son on his way, upon complaint, and the argument begins. The watchmen take Orhan into custody on the charge of resistance and then hospital procedures are carried out. The prosecutor says, ‘Let him stay in custody, so that he can come to his senses’. After leaving the police station, I went home. I was told in the morning that my son committed suicide. I went back to the police station to pick up the body and was told that an autopsy would be done.”
Manisa Governorate’s Office announced on August 24, 2022 that, a judicial and administrative investigation was launched.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 23, 2022 that, a member of Community Houses in Sancaktepe district of Istanbul was stopped by 2 persons who introduced themselves as police officers and were forced to be a police informant.

It is learned that on August 23, 2022, 11 prisoners in Urfa T Type Prison joined the hunger strike that started on August 8, 2022 to demand an end to right violations. It is reported that 30 prisoners are on hunger strike in total.

The police used pepper spray to intervene in the funeral for Gökhan Gür, who died due to heart attack on August 22, 2022; held in Perşembe district of Ordu on August 24, 2022 and detained 9 people on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

It is learned that 3 people (Caner Yüksel, İlhan Şeker and Müştak Şeker) were detained in relation to the protest about the problems caused by the dam construction in Yusufeli district of Artvin held on August 23, 2022. Detained people are released on the same day.

6 people who detained on August 23, 2022 in house raids in Ankara on the grounds of social media posts about the events taking place in the North and East Syria, are released by the court on judicial control conditions on August 24, 2022.

It is learned that the “Milyonfest Fethiye” music festival, which will be held in the Fethiye district of Muğla on September 1-4, 2022, is banned by the Muğla Governorate’s Office on August 23, 2022 on the grounds that “it cannot be held without permission from the Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change as it may have negative effects on the ecological balance”.

It is learned that the news reports about a suspended judge, published on https://www.sabah.com.tr, https://t24.com.tr, https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No. 3 on August 23, 2022.
