(08/146) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Ali Demir) died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants during the “Claw-Lock” military operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on August 24, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 24, 2023 that 1 militant died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in the rural areas of Bitlis on August 11, 2023.

(08/147) Person Died in Istanbul…

It is learned that a clash broke out during a police operation in Kağıthane district of Istanbul on August 25, 2023, in which a person named D. A. was killed and 2 people were injured. It is learned that 1 police officer (Hakan Telli) died and 1 police officer was injured in the clash.

Istanbul Governorate’s Office made a statement on the incident and said following: “The police team, who was sent to the scene in order to evaluate the report of “Manufacturing and Trafficking in Drugs” in an address in the Hamidiye neighbourhood of Kağıthane district, was fired with long-barrelled guns and pistols by the people inside the residence. As a result of the fire opened from the building, police officers Hakan Telli and A. Y. Ç.  were seriously injured (…) As a result of the intervention carried out by our reinforcement teams called to the address, the person named D. A. was dead, the person named O. A. was injured, G. D., K. T. and A. A. were captured alive (…) Hakan Telli could not be saved despite all the interventions and was martyred.”

(08/0148) People Subjected to Physical Violence of Police and Watchmen in Ankara…

 

It is learned from the news coverage of August 24, 2023 that women passing by in Çankaya district of Ankara were subjected to physical and verbal violence by 2 police officers and 1 watchman in plain clothes. It is also stated in the news that these three officers opened fire in the air. Three officers who were detained regarding the incident were arrested by the court on August 25, 2023.

Ankara Provincial Security Directorate made the following statement on the subject: “After receiving a report of a fight at around 06.30 on August 24, the police teams who went to the scene, immediately detained 3 people, one watchman and two police officers in plain clothes, who verbally-physically attacked the women passing by and fired into the air while they were drunk at the exit of the entertainment venue. A judicial and administrative investigation is initiated against these persons, and they are suspended and referred to the court.”

(08/149) Prisoners Postponed to be Released…

It is learned from the statement of the Human Rights Association (HRA) Diyarbakır branch chair Ercan Yılmaz which was covered by the press on August 25, 2023 that the release of at least 271 prisoners was postponed by the Prison Administration and Observation Boards.

(08/150) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 25, 2023 that, in Diyarbakır High Security Prison No. 1 the social, cultural and sports rights of the prisoners were prevented, the newspapers demanded by the prisoners were not given despite of any ban on these newspapers, the food given to them was not nutritious and hygienic, the prices at the prison commissary were high, the letters of the prisoners were seized and the visits were shorter than the legal duration.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 25, 2023 that, in Diyarbakır T Type Prison No. 1 the social, cultural and sports rights of the prisoners were prevented, the newspapers demanded by the prisoners were not given despite of any ban on these newspapers, the food given to them was not nutritious and hygienic, the prices at the prison commissary were high.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 25, 2023 that, in Diyarbakır T Type Prisons No. 2 and 3, the transferred prisoners were forced to strip search, the wards were over crowded, the food given to them was not nutritious and hygienic, the prices at the prison commissary were high.

(08/151) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 24, 2023 that, the prisoners in Malatya Akdaçağ T Type Prison were forced to mouth search during hospital transfers and those who reject it were not taken to hospital.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 25, 2023 that, in Diyarbakır T Type Prisons No. 1, 2 and 3, there were not enough doctors and health professionals.

(08/152) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on August 24, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(08/153) Detained ESP Members in Antep…

The Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) members Mihriban Aslan and Hatice Özaslan were detained in Antep on August 23, 2023 on the grounds of making street writings about the Suruç massacre, are arrested by the court on August 23, 2023.

(08/154) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against Gerçek Gündem news portal editor Furkan Karabay, on the grounds of his social media post about public appointments, was accepted by Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 16 on August 24, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Furkan Karabay on the charge of ‘publicly and continuously insulting public official’. The first trial will be held on January 17, 2024.

(08/155) Prisoners on Trial in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 14, 2023 that, the indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against 19 prisoners (Abidin Kahraman, Özgür Çelik, Çetin Çekiç, Ferhat Musa, Kinyas Atima, Abdurrahim Akalp, Murat Kaçar, Şadi Muhammed, Fikret Biçen, Mehmet Akyüz, Nuri Vural and Osman Yalavuz) in Ankara Sincan High Security Prison No. 1, on the grounds of tearing the nets on the metal bars of the solitary cell windows, was accepted by Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 11 on August 15, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 19 people on the charge of ‘damaging public property’.
