(09/232) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 22, 2020 that, 2 HPG militants died in an air operation of Turkish Armed Forces in rural areas of Şırnak on September 14, 2020.

(09/233) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 21, 2020 that, prisoners in Edirne F Type Prison started a hunger strike on September 21, 2020, to demand an end to right violations in prison.

(09/234) Police Intervention to a Protest in Çanakkale…

It is learned that the gendarmerie raided the area where a “nature watch” is held to protest gold mining project in Kaz Mountains of Çanakkale, and detained 4 people on September 22, 2020. It is reported that detainees were not allowed to call their families and lawyers, to use bathrooms before being detained, and to record the gendarmerie raid. It is learned that 4 people (Seçkin Barbaros, Onur Uysal, Sema Demir, Canan Hakko) were released after statement procedures on the same day, and the watch area was closed out by gendarmerie.

(09/235) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1414 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on September 22, 2020 at 13.30 and 18.00 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(09/236) Police Intervention to a Press Declaration in Van…

On September 11, 2020, 2 people (Osman Şiban and Servet Turgut) were detained by soldiers in Çığlıca hamlet of Çatak district of Van, and they were taken away by helicopter. It was found out 2 days later that, they were admitted in intensive care unit of Van Regional Education and Research Hospital. The medical reports given for Osman Şiban and Servet Turgut have stated marks of torture and ill-treatment. On September 22, 2020, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) group deputy chair Saruhan Oluç, Van MP’s Muazzez Orhan and Murat Sarısaç and Mersin MP Rıdvan Turan visited Van Regional Education and Research Hospital to get information about Osman Şiban and Servet Turgut. The police prevented the press declaration which was to be held in front of the hospital after the visit, on the grounds of Van Governorate’s ban on events. It is learned that the press declaration was held in another area which was surrounded by the police and that the journalists were not allowed to follow the press declaration.

On September 22, 2020, 7 people including Filiz Işık, former member of Midyat district council, are detained in house raids in Nusaybin and Midyat districts of Mardin. It is learned that Zozan Gencan, one of the detainees, has a three-month-old baby and was taken to Nusaybin District Security Directorate with her baby.

Berivan Elter, an activist of Tevgera Jinen Azad – Free Women’s Movement (TJA) who was detained while she was visiting her brother in Van F Type Prison on September 22, 2020, is released after statement procedures on the same day.

(09/239) People on Trial for Participating in Demonstrations in Batman…

The first trial of the case against 76 people including HDP’s Youth Assembly, on the charges of ‘violation of the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’ and ‘not leaving the meeting despite the warning’, is held at Batman Penal Court of First Instance No 1 on September 22, 2020. 76 people were detained in police interventions against the press declaration which was held to support Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven’s hunger strike in prison, and the press declaration to protest Ilısu dam Project which will leave historical town Hasankeyf submerged. The court adjourned the trial to January 19, 2021.

(09/240) Lawyer on Trial in Diyarbakır for Social Media Posts…

The final trial of the case against Gulan Çağın Kaleli, general secretary of Lawyers for Freedom Association (ÖHD) and lawyer at HRFT Diyarbakır office, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on September 23, 2020. Gulan Çağın Kaleli is charged with ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation successively’ for her social media posts between 2013 and 2018. The court acquitted Gulan Çağın Kaleli. Kaleli was detained on February 15, 2019 and was released by the court on judicial control conditions on February 16, 2019.

(09/241) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalist Sabiha Temizkan, on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, is held on September 22, 2020. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for Sabiha Temizkan, on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation via press’. The court adjourned the trial to October 15, 2020.

(09/242) Özgür Gündem Case…

The trial of the case against Hüseyin Aykol and Zana Kaya, executive editors and İnan Kızılkaya, editor in chief of Özgür Gündem newspaper and politician Hatip Dicle, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 22 on September 22, 2020. The court decided to prolong the detention warrant for Hatip Dicle and adjourned the trial to December 15, 2020.

(09/243) Kemal Kurkut Case…

The trial of the case at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7, against police officer Y. Ş., for killing university student Kemal Kurkut by shooting him behind his back during Newroz celebrations in Diyarbakır in 2017, is held on September 22, 2020. Police officer Y. Ş. is charged with ‘killing on probable intention’ and the indictment demands life imprisonment for this charge.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded jail sentence from 3 years up to 9 years for the police officer, on the charge of ‘killing with conscious negligence’. The court adjourned the trial to November 17, 2020.

(09/244) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On September 22, 2020, 11 people are detained in operations covering 9 cities through a Kocaeli based investigation, 17 people including military members on active duty and dismissed military members are detained in operations covering 12 cities through a Van based investigation.

It is learned that 3 of 47 people who were detained in operations covering 7 cities through an Ankara based investigation on September 11, 2020; are released after statement procedures on September 22, 2020.

On September 22, 2020, 55 people including lawyers and military members on active duty are detained in operations covering 19 cities through an Izmir based investigation.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 22, 2020 that www.nuceciwan51.com website of Nûçe Ciwan news agency is banned to access by Van Penal Court of Peace. It is the 51st ban on Nûçe Ciwan news agency’s websites.

(09/246) Ban of Events in Siirt and Batman…

Siirt Governorate made a declaration on September 21, 2020 and announced that, all open-door events such as demonstrations and meetings, press declarations, meetings, sit-ins, opening stands and tents, festivals, concerts, delivering leaflets and so on are banned for 15 days as of September 22, 2020.

Batman Governorate made a declaration on September 21, 2020 and announced that, all open-door events such as demonstrations and meetings, press declarations, meetings, sit-ins, opening stands and tents, festivals, concerts, delivering leaflets and so on are subject to permission of local authority and all open and closed-door events, meetings, press declarations, opening stands, delivering leaflets and so on nearby Batman M Type Prison are banned for 15 days as of September 22, 2020.

(09/246) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 65 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,692 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on September 22, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 7,639 and total number of confirmed cases is 306,302 as of September 22, 2020.

Diyarbakır Health Platform declared on September 22, 2020 that 10 health workers lost their lives due to Covid-19 pandemic in Diyarbakır.

Education and Science Workers’ Union (Eğitim-Sen) made a declaration on September 22, 2020 and announced that, according to data received by union headquarters, Covid-19 cases were seen in 76 schools in Turkey.
