It is claimed in the news coverage of 22 October 2024 that, a prisoner in Adana Suluca Y Type Prison lost his life due to a suicide attempt. The name of the prisoner who allegedly lost his life could not be learned.
(10/279) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of 22 October 2024 that, Fevzi Arslan (55, m), a seriously ill prisoner in Adana Suluca Y Type Prison, is kept in a single room and that the prison administration imposed standing roll-calls as a condition to put Fevzi Arslan in the same ward with his two brothers. It is also learned from the news reports that the food given to prisoners in the same prison is insufficient and prisoners have to shop from the prison canteen, but the variety of products is insufficient and does not meet the needs of prisoners.
It is learned from the news coverage of 23 October 2024 that, standing roll-calls were forced in Samsun T Type Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of 22 October 2024 that, Fevzi Arslan (55, m), a seriously ill prisoner kept in Adana Suluca Y Type Prison, was not subjected to routine check-ups and treatment because he rejected to be searched inside his mouth during hospital transfers; and that Fevzi Arslan had to sleep on the floor with newspapers and blankets because the prison administration did not give him the orthopedic bed he needed due to his health problems.

It is learned from the news coverage of 22 October 2024 that, 2 LGBTI+ persons who are refugees/asylum seekers and who were detained in the raid conducted by the Morality Bureau Police Department at an entertainment venue where LGBTI+ persons go to in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on 20 October 2024, were released on 21 October 2024 and were sent to Istanbul Arnavutköy Repatriation Centre (GGM) although all their documents related to their residence permit in Turkey were complete. It is learned that 1 of these 2 people was subjected to strip search threats and both of them were not given food for a day.
(10/282) Gendarmerie Intervention Against a Protest in Trabzon…
On 23 October 2024, gendarmerie intervened against the people who were protesting the mining exploration in the Erikli Plateau of the Araklı district of Trabzon and detained 16 people including Şener Şengül, President of Araklı Karadere Valley and Plateaus Nature and Wildlife Protection Association. Detained 16 people were released the same day after statement procedures. The names of the detained people could not be learned.

On 20 October 2024, 30 people were detained in a raid to an entertainment venue for LGBTI+’s in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. 21 people were released after statement procedures at the police on 21 October 2024. On 22 October 2024, 8 of 9 people who were referred to the criminal peace judgeship for arrest after the statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office, were arrested on the charge of ‘obscenity’.

On 23 October 2024, 4 people were detained in house raids in the Tatvan district of Bitlis. It is also reported that doors of houses were broken and many books and digital materials were seized. The reason for the detentions could not be learned. Names of the detained people are Nedim Türemiş, Çetin Yılmaz, Milazım Aysal, Diyar Aysal.

On 23 October 2024, 4 people including Yeni Asya executive editor Kazım Güleçyüz were detained in Istanbul, on the grounds of their social media posts about Fetullah Gülen’s death. The names of 3 other detainees could not be learned.

On 23 October 2024, 1 person (Zeynel Abidin Kaya) was detained in a house raid in the Pertek district of Tunceli on the allegations of ‘aiding an illegal organization’.
(10/287) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…
The trial of the case against Abdurrahman Gök, editor of Mezopotamya Agency (MA), continued on October 22, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5. The indictment demands a sentence for Abdurrahman Gök on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. The court decided to continue the judicial control conditions on Abdurrahman Gök and to request a copy of the investigation file opened by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in 2024 and adjourned the trial to 30 January 2025.
Abdurrahman Gök was detained in Diyarbakır on 25 April 2023 and arrested on 27 April 2023. The journalist was released at the hearing of the case against him at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on 5 December 2023.

The trial of the case against 38 members of Peoples‘ Democratic Congress (HDK) and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) including Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Co-Chair and Istanbul MP Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar, was held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 28 on October 23, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for 38 people on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to 28 November 2024.

The first trial of the case against lawyer Dilek Ekmekçi, for her social media posts, started on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 24 on October 22, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for Dilek Ekmekçi on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court released Dilek Ekmekçi on judicial control conditions and adjourned the trial to 10 January 2025.
Lawyer Dilek Ekmekçi was arrested on 2 September 2024 on charges of ‘insulting a public official’ and ‘slander’.

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against Dr. Pınar Mualla Saip, former Chair of the Board of Directors of Istanbul Medical Chamber, and doctors Osman Küçükosmanoğlu, Rukiye Nurten Ömeroğlu, Güray Kılıç, Osman Öztürk, Murat Ekmez and Recep Koç, members of the Board of Directors, for permitting an investigation against Justice and Development Party (AKP) Kocaeli MP and then Kocaeli University Rector Dr. Sadettin Hülagü, was held on 22 October 2024. The court sentenced 7 people to 5 months each for ‘abuse of office’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

Muharrem Erkek, Mayor of Çanakkale and former Çanakkale MP of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) testified at the Çanakkale Penal Court of First Instance No 1 on 21 October 2024 in connection with a lawsuit filed against him in Ankara for sharing a cartoon on his social media account in 2018 when he was an MP. The indictment demands a sentence for Muharrem Erkek on the charge of ‘insulting the President’.
A lawsuit was filed against then CHP Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and 68 CHP deputies for ‘insulting the President’ on the grounds that they shared the cartoon on their social media accounts and the proceedings against them were submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).

The first trial of the case against 3 women who were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during the police intervention against a peaceful demonstration against the detention of Prof. Dr. Şebnem Korur Fincancı, former Chair of the Central Council of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) and Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV) board member, in Istanbul on 26 October 2022, and who called Hanifi Zengin, then Istanbul Security Branch Director, ‘harasser’, started on 22 October 2024 at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 27. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded a sentence for 3 people on the charge of ‘insult’. The court adjourned the trial to 7 January 2025.

It is learned from the news coverage of 22 October 2024 that Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against journalist Abdurrahman Gök in 2024. The reason for the investigation is unknown.
(10/294) Ban of Access to Web Content…
It is learned from the news coverage of October 22, 2024, that 177 social media accounts, that shared social media posts about Fetullah Gülen’s death, were banned from access on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. Ministry of Interior announced on 22 October 2024 that a total of 177 people were subjected to proceedings for the same reason.
It is learned from the news coverage of 23 October 2024 that the domain name www.blogspot.com of the free blogging platform Blogger was banned from access by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) on 22 October 2024 due to ‘piracy’. TFF withdrew the access ban decision on the same date.
