(11/190) Earthquake in Düzce…

It is learned that 80 people (37 in Düzce, 2 in Istanbul, 10 in Zonguldak, 26 in Sakarya, 1 in Bolu and 4 in Bursa) were injured, one of them seriously, in the 5.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Düzce on November 23, 2022.

(11/191) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of November 22, 2022 that, Elif Deniz, a prisoner in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison was transferred to Kayseri Bünyan Women’s Prison under coercion.

(11/192) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on November 22, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(11/193) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened in the press declaration held in Kağıthane district of Istanbul on November 22, 2022 to protest the “Claw-Sword” military operation of the Turkish Armed Forces into some regions of Syria and the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government. It is learned that 10 people were detained by the police using physical violence.

(11/194) Preventions and Interventions Against 25 November Protests…

It is learned that the police intervened in the detained 8 people distributing leaflets in Avcılar district of Istanbul on November 22, 2022 to call for the march to be held in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul for 25 November – International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

(11/195) Police Prevention to a Protest in Diyarbakır…

It is learned that the press declaration to be held on November 22, 2022 in Diyarbakır by Dicle Fırat Journalists’ Association (DFG) and Mezopotamya Women Journalists’ Platform (MKGP), regarding Hawar News Agency reporter Îsam Ebdulah who died in the “Claw-Sword” military operation of the Turkish Armed Forces into some regions of Syria and the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government, was prevented by the police on the grounds of the governorate’s ban.

(11/196) Detained Child in Diyarbakır…

A 17-year-old child (B. Ç.) who was detained in a house raid in Diyarbakır on November 19, 222, on the grounds of writing on the walls, is released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on November 22, 2022.

(11/197) Human Rights Defenders on Trial…

On November 22, 2022, the Penal Department No. 3 of the Court of Cassation concluded on the appeal against the convictions of 11 human rights defenders by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 35 on 3 July 2020. The Court of Cassation overturned the 6 years and 3 months of jail sentence given to Taner Kılıç for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and the 2 years and 1 month of jail sentence given to Günal Kurşun, İdil Eser and Özlem Dalkıran for ‘aiding an illegal organisation’ on the grounds of “a judgment with incomplete research” and “lack of conclusive evidence”.

10 human rights defenders were detained during a meeting in Istanbul Büyükada on July 5, 2017. Human rights defenders for whom detention period was extended to 14 days, were referred to the court on July 12, 2017. The court arrested Amnesty International Turkey Director İdil Eser, Özlem Dalkıran from Citizens Assembly, Günal Kurşun and Veli Acu from Human Rights Agenda Association, Ali Gharavi (citizen of Switzerland) and Peter Steudtner (citizen of Germany) and released İlknur Üstün from Women’s Coalition, Nalan Ekrem from Citizens Assembly, Nejat Taştan from Association for Monitoring Equal Rights and Şeyhmus Özbekli from Rights Initiative on juridical control conditions. Taner Kılıç was detained on June 6, 2017 and was arrested on June 9, 2017. On July 21, upon the prosecutor’s office’s objection to the release, a detention warrant was issued for four of the human rights defenders. İlknur Üstün and Nalan Ekrem were arrested on July 23, 2017, and Nejat Taştan and Şeyhmus Özbekli were released on juridical control conditions. On the first trial of the case which was held on October 25, 2017 eight human rights defenders were released on control conditions. Taner Kılıç was released on August 15, 2018, by an interim decision of the court in regular case review.

(11/198) The Case Against Executives of Chamber of Architects…

The trial of the case against the executive board members of the Chamber of Architects Ankara branch (branch chair Tezcan Karakuş Candan, branch secretary Nihal Evirgen, and board members Muteber Osmanpaşaoğlu, Ünal Kara, Tuğba Arslan, Ece Yoltay and Özgür Bayramoğlu) for giving the International Television Journalism to Jin TV channel, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 25 on November 22, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 7 people on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to January 13, 2023.

(11/199) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The retrial of the case against the former Editor-in-Chief of Evrensel newspaper, Çağrı Sarı, and former privilege owner Arif Koşar, for the news titled “Police raked the public in Nusaybin: 3 injured” is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on November 22, 2022. The Court of Cassation has overturned the 5 months of prison sentence given by the local court, on the grounds that the criminal elements did not occur. The court acquitted journalists.

(11/200) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against the Human Rights Association (HRA) co-chair and co-executive editor Eren Keskin and managing editor Reyhan Çapan from Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on November 22, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to March 14, 2023.

(11/201) Özgür Gündem Case…

The trial of the case against Hüseyin Aykol and Zana Kaya, executive editor İnan Kızılkaya, editor in chief of Özgür Gündem newspaper and politician Hatip Dicle, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 22 on November 22, 2022. The court decided to continue detention warrant for Hatip Dicle and adjourned the trial to March 14, 2023.

(11/202) Person on Trial…

It is learned from the news coverage of November 22, 2022 that, Erzurum Regional Court has overturned the acquittal of musician Yılmaz Çelik in the case at Tunceli Heavy Penal Court No. 2 for the songs he sang at a concert on December 8, 2019.

Yılmaz Çelik was detained on December 8, 2019 and was arrested December 10, 2019. He was released by the court at the first trial held on March 25, 2022.

(11/203) Former Chief of General Staff on Trial…

The trial of the case against the former Chief of General Staff İlker Başbuğ, on the charge of “publicly inciting the people to hatred and hostility or degrading” in the interview he gave, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on November 22, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to February 14, 2023.

(11/204) Police Officers on Trial in Istanbul…

After the Constitutional Court ruled that journalist Gökhan Biçici was subjected to torture and other ill-treatment by the police while following the news during the Gezi protests in 2013, the trial against the responsible police officers at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 48 on November 22, 2022. The court decided to wait the warrant against the defendant police officers who did not attend the trial and adjourned the trial to February 23, 2023.

(11/205) Hatay-Reyhanlı Case…

The trial of the case against Mehmet Gezer, for the bomb attacks which killed 53 people and injured 153 people in Reyhanlı district of Hatay on May 11, 2013, is held on November 22, 2022.

Mehmet Gezer, who was extradited to Turkey by the United States of America on June 30, 2022 and arrested on 7 July 2022, attended the trial from prison via sound and vision system. It is learned that he stated the following: “In the beginning, there was information that the attack would take place in Ankara. I learned that the target was Reyhanli, five days before the attack, after Hacı told Nasır Eskiocak. As soon as I learned this, I informed the Hatay police. Two days later, I confirmed this from the police. In fact, I gave details as far as who will bring the bomb”. After the defence hearings, the court adjourned the trial.

(11/206) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

It is learned that 14 people were detained in operations covering 4 cities through an Istanbul based investigation.
