The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Özcan Kaya) who was wounded on June 15, 2023 during the Claw military operation of the Turkish Armed Forces in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government, died in hospital on June 23, 2023.

(06/245) Person Died in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 23, 2023 that, a prisoner named K. S. in Antalya Alanya L Type Closed Prison was found dead in his ward on June 11, 2023. It is claimed in the news reports that the prisoner was receiving treatment at the prison infirmary for the last week but was not referred to hospital.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 23, 2023 that, an ill prisoner named Hilmi Karaoğlan in Tekirdağ T Type Prison was not given his regular medication for the last 2 weeks.

(06/247) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on June 22, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

It is learned that the appeal made on June 23, 2023 to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

(06/248) Detained TÖP Executive and Purple Solidarity Members in Ankara…

The Social Freedom Party (TÖP) central coordination member Hatice Göz and the Purple Solidarity members Selda Kondakçı, Rüya Özgür and Melike Büyük who were detained in house raids in Ankara and Izmir through an Ankara based investigation on June 19, 2023, were released by the court on June 22, 2023.

(06/249) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

It is learned that Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 10 accepted the indictment of Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office against Jinnews reporter Beritan Canözer on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on June 23, 2023. The court also decided to release Beritan Canözer on judicial control conditions. The first trial of the case will be held on October 25, 2023. Beritan Canözer was detained through a Diyarbakır based investigation on April 25, 2023 and was arrested on April 27, 2023.

It is learned that Ankara penal Court of First Instance No. 71 accepted the indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against 3 journalists (Sibel Yükler, Yıldız Tar and Deniz Nazlım) on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’ on June 23, 2023. Journalists Sibel Yükler, Yıldız Tar and Deniz Nazlım were detained by the police using physical violence to intervene in the press declaration held in Ankara on July 5, 2023 to protest arrest of journalists in Diyarbakır. Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office has decided non-prosecution upon the criminal complaint against police officers, saying “there is not enough evidence that law enforcement officers have deliberately committed injury and torture by exceeding the limit of their authority to use force”.

The first trial of the case against journalist Sedef Kabaş on the grounds of insulting the President on social media, is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on June 22, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to November 16, 2023.

The trial of the case against Demokrat Haber news portal’s executive editor Mehmet Göcekli on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 27 on June 22, 2023. The court decided to issue a warrant for Mehmet Göcekli and adjourned the trial to December 26, 2023.

The trial of the case against Karşı Mahalle news portal reporter Sezgin Kartal is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 22 on June 22, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Sezgin Kartal on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court decided to release Sezgin Kartal with a ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial to October 31, 2023. Sezgin Kartal was detained on January 10, 2023 and was arrested on January 13, 2023.

(06/254) Former DBP Co-Chair, Journalist and Other People on Trial in Batman…

The final trial of the case against 28 people including the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) former co-chair and former deputy Sebahat Tuncel and Jiyan News grant holder İdris Yayla, on the grounds of the protest against trustee appointments to the municipalities in 2016, is held at Batman Penal court of First Instance No. 1 on June 22, 2023. The court decided to acquit 25 people apart from 3 people for whom the case files were separated.

(06/255) Former MP on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against DBP’s former co-chair and former Diyarbakır MP Emine Ayna, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 4 on June 22, 2023. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for Emine Ayna from 1 year up to 5 years. The court adjourned the trial to October 5, 2023.

(06/256) The Case of Dismissal of TMA Central Council Members…

The trial of the case at Ankara Civil Court of First Instance No. 31 regarding the dismissal of the central council members of the TMA is held on June 22, 2023. The court decided to wait for the objection for the recusation demand and adjourned the trial to November 10, 2023.

(06/257) Person on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against a Peace Mother named Hayriye Türkekul (73) on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 10 on June 23, 2023. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for Hayriye Türkekul, on the grounds of participating in the hunger strike to support the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven and being a member of the Rosa Women’s Association. The court sentenced Hayriye Türkekul to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The final trial of the case against 17 people on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 3 on June 23, 2023. The court sentenced 8 people (the Peoples’ Democratic Party [HDP] former Kars MP Şafak Erkmen Özanlı and Nazife Göner, Nazire Geçimli Güneş, Zekiye İlbasan, Nezir Erdemci, Rıza Taşdelen, Ramazan Yıldız and İlyas Demir) to 6 years and 3 months each on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’; and acquitted 9 people (İsmail Çelik, Gülüm Bayram, Doğan Çiftçi, Emrullah Bingöl, Kemal Dülğer, Bişar Uzun, Tahsin Karçık, Asiye Yılmaz and Celal Alphan).

It is learned from the news coverage of June 23, 2023 that, an investigation was launched against 26 people including Kazdagi Natural and Cultural Heritage Conservation Association chair Süheyla Doğan, for participating in the press declaration in front of Bayramiç District Governorate’s office on June 20, 2023, to protest the rejection of the application to use the camping area in Bayramiç district of Çanakkale for the Kaz Mountains Ecofest, which is planned to be held between 21-25 June 2023.

(06/260) Banned Festival in Balıkesir and Çanakkale…

It is learned that the application to use Darıdere Nature Park in Edremit district of Balıkesir for the Kaz Mountains Ecofest, which is planned to be held between 21-25 June 2023, was rejected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry on June 17, 2023; and the application to use the camping area in Bayramiç district of Çanakkale was also rejected by the district governorate’s office on June 20, 2023.
