(01/185) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 22, 2024, that on January 15, 2024, 6 prisoners in Diyarbakır High Security Prison No 2 were subjected to physical violence of correction officers and prison wardens for greeting prisoners in other wards.

It is reported on January 22, 2024, that Jiyan Ateş, a prisoner in Ankara Sincan Women’s Prison, was not informed about the death of her father, was not given additional phone rights and was prevented from attending the funeral.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 23, 2024, that in Çorum L Type Prison, some prisoners sleep on the floor due to lack of space in wards, the beds given to prisoners are not hygienic, and there are problems in heating and regular water supply in wards.

(01/186) People Detained in Diyarbakır…

On January 23, 2024, Sıdıka Süleymanoğlu (83) and Netice Süleymanoğlu (83) were detained in house raids in Bağlar and Kayapınar districts of Diyarbakır through a Çanakkale based investigation and taken to Sur District Security Directorate. The reason for the detention was not made public. Sıdıka Süleymanoğlu was released the same day after her statement procedures at Diyarbakır Security Directorate.

(01/187) Journalist on Trial Due to Social Media Posts in Mardin…

The first trial of the case against journalist Ahmet Kanbal on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ through a social media post, started on January 23, 2024, at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2. The court decided to give time to the prosecutor to prepare his final opinion and adjourned the trial to February 1, 2024.

(01/188) Musician on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against musician Emel Çiftçi on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘being an executive of an illegal organization’ started on January 23, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4. The court released Emel Çiftçi on judicial control condition and adjourned the trial to March 14, 2024.

Musician Emel Çiftçi, who is undergoing cancer treatment, was detained on August 21, 2023, at a hospital in Diyarbakır through an Ankara-based investigation. Emel Çiftçi was arrested by the court on the same day on the allegation of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.

The final trial of the case against 9 members of Peace Mothers’ Assembly and TJA activists who were detained by torture and ill-treatment during police intervention against the press declaration in front of Van T Type, F Type and High Security Prisons campus on December 30, 2018, on Van Heavy Penal Court No 4, on the charges of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’ and ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organisation’ was held on January 18, 2024. The court acquitted 7 people (Besna Akdoğan, Gülhazar Ünvercan, Hediye Kaçak, Meryem Abi, Zekiye Kaya, Neslihan Şedal and Mizgin Bor) on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’ and sentenced each person to 2 years and 1 month on the charge of ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organization’. The court decided to separate the case against 1 person (Dilan Yıldız) and to drop the case against 1 person (Hemi Xemê Akdoğan) due to his death.

(01/190) Investigation on Torture and Ill-Treatment by Gendarmerie…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 22, 2024, that the decision of Muğla Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on November 15, 2023, on the torture and ill-treatment of İbrahim Uğur Toprak, Izmir Branch Chair of Chamber of Food Engineers, by gendarmerie in Akbelen Forest on July 29, 2023, was overturned by Bodrum Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1.
